  • It wasn't far from anyone's lips at the recent East Coast Farming Expo - big money being paid for farms, with Wairoa District getting more than its fair share of forestry because its land is suitable and at the right price. Full story: bit.ly/lf618

And guess what with all this forestry every builder I know in the industry is struggling to get timber!! The people know what the people need and we need to make a stand an take this government down John key started it and Jacinda has accelerated it 10 fold. Our country needs to be self sufficient and support people first not corporations.

Why not native forests instead of pine?

Takes to long to grow native trees

Bizarre, if its never to be harvest why would time even factor .

@@SemajResarf - So what. Growing natives capture and retains carbon longer when matured. It least it will return NZ back to what it was like before human settlement.

It has nothing to do with the time it’s all about the dollar and it cost to much to put into native trees. It’s not about saving the planet it’s al about looking good for outside world

But if it's "not for harvesting" then it doesn't matter, so either it is in fact for harvesting or it literally does not matter and they are just planting trees for the sake of planting trees and this is all just another govt feel good exercise with no actual point...

Farming needs to be 100% sustainable and environmentally friendly based on 'suit the land and climate' concept, with more effective farm management for better financial returns, as the world will still need to be feed regardless of any global pandemic and planet warming. I do agree that farm land that has unproductive land should be be switched to mixed native, not pine, since it will not be harvested. I do agree that forest planting should be 70% mixed native and 30% pine.

Meat production being shut down by the watermelon greens. This is madness. As this is a thing, it should be native tress only.

Pines are a very poor choice for permanent reforestation due to having a relatively short lifespan.

Illegal harvesting operations in the Wairoa district are overlooked by the relevant authorities who should be prosecuting the land owners and the harvesting contractors. Rayonier Matariki allow illegal harvesting operations on their land on the Willowflat Road with impunity. I ask why?

Cabon credits should be applied to -Native trees-
Not trees that dress the area in needles turn the ground sour and sow the rivers , streams and the air with pollen
    *Grow food makes sense*
*You can't eat a native but i know something that loves the nectar*
Grow back to Growing Sheep and Cattle.

As a kiwi I have thought about this for ages why isn't every public park and Broadway littered with fruit and vegetable trees for free access to the public. We waste so much resources maintaining plants that are only athesitcially pleasing vs practical

Yeah its a joke ay , i think were getting tucked , when theres famine and mouths n pets to feed , keep farming and take dominion over the animals in a humane way as us kiwi farmers do , if we can already feed 40 million lets take it to 80 million

well said buddy, and spoken like the true warrior that u are. we are the resistance/sellout "govt" the enemy of the average kiwi. only serve multi-national interests.

New Zealand provides food for 40 million people in overseas exports, how on earth can the farming community say they're struggling, in return New Zealanders pay premium prices for second quality food at the counter just another money gouging exercise from the taxpayers.

It wasn’t slash that flooded peoples homes and deposited the silt everywhere. As trees intercept water and their roots hold the soil together it would have been far worse without forestry. And half the woody debris is not forestry it’s from shelter belts, poplars, willows and Manuka.
