- In a previous trip to Berchtesgaden, we took a trip up to Hitler's Eagle's Nest to show what became a prize for Allied soldiers at the end of WWII. We showed a lot in those episodes, but we didn't show everything. So we're back with Matt Leitch, who played Floyd Talbert in "Band of Brothers" to address a few unanswered questions and take a peek behind the making of Band of Brothers.
This episode was produced in partnership with The Gettysburg Museum of History. See how you can support history education & artifact preservation by visiting their website & store at www.gettysburg...

As someone who had a few family members in WW2 , My grandfather being one of them , Its important that these things stand as a reminder of not only the victories of the allies over evil but that history is not repeated . Thank you JD and Eric for doing these videos and preserving history
To the people who would say destroy or tare down places like the Eagles Nest, history no matter how difficult or heinous needs to be preserved. Yes, we can learn from a book or a photo but to be able to stand in a place where men came to fight tyranny and liberate and oppressed people is much more impactful. Places like the Eagles Nest are trophies and monuments to our troops who sacrificed everything to fight evil. Those who forget their history are condemned to repeat it.
Couldn't have said it any better!👍
I Agree Here Here ❤
You’re absolutely right. History is being repeated on various college campuses today all across America. Sad but true.
Yeah.. I see it as evidence of what actually happened. If everything would be destroyed people would be able to claim it never happened.
@@SoCal780👍🏻
The man himself! Lovely little cameo on The History Underground - a proud moment 😎
👊🏻
Went up to the Eagle’s Nest in October and ate in the restaurant and absolutely phenomenal piece of history…. For anybody in the comments that hasn’t gone or wishes to go…. GO it’s worth it
How was the food…expensive ?
@@robertdolan5732 the food was actually pretty good… it’s not really expensive maybe 10-15 bucks for a decent sized meal… I had the Jagerschnitzel and noodles it was pretty good 👍🏼
Good question. So, Weston?
@wasdplayer The food wasn’t expensive at all like $10-15…. The food is really good I had a jagerschnitzel with noodles it was really good with an apple strudel it was a lot better then I thought it was gona be
also the 'Currywurst' is an delicious treat for yourself, awesome experience there!
I think it’s a shame, that’s so much infrastructure surrounding Hitler and the German war effort, was destroyed by the allies. It is history, nothing more, nothing less. It is impossible to eradicate the memory, of such a monster, as this brilliant video proves. We should never forget.
Since I’m poor and can’t afford to travel to these places, I’m grateful for this channel.
I'm actually watching Band Of Brothers on Netflix now and this goes great with me currently as I am on episode 9. Then on to The Pacific. After that will be the new Masters Of The Air.
👍🏻
Imagine being a bloke on the tour and a random guy shows up with the ACTUAL KEYS to the Eagles Nest. Chills man, chills. Great job on giving them an experience they will never soon forget.
😂
That "random guy with keys" was on Pawn Stars and owns the Gettysburg Museum. He has a bunch of artifacts and has a insane collection of history. This channel has a bunch of videos of what he owns
@@ItsGreg22 I know who he is but I’m guessing not all of the people in that tour knew who he was. What a great treat that would be though.
@@twenty4dupont ohhh i see what you mean. I misunderstood
I was there last december. Went up the walking trail behind. A really great experience marching up and forgetting the bus. Amazing
JD, as always, we can't thank you enough for this stuff. I hope one day I can take my kiddos to these same places and share the joy of history like you do.
Thank you all for making that climb so I don’t have too! Lol! Great video as always 😊
If I was someone with unlimited money I’d want to build the Berghof completely from spec just for a historical reference and for people to visit. It was an absolutely beautiful property with an even more outstanding view.
Great video JD!
You nailed it! The Eagle's Nest is a monument to the brave allies that defeated evil and a reminder that evil still exists today!
Mate you deserve 1 million+ subscribers, the quality in which you deliver top notch history content is unmatched. Awesome stuff
Thank you, JD and Eric for another tour of the Eagles nest. Appreciate you and Erik highlighting the success in capturing it as its historic significance. I’d like to try out my 60-year-old airborne legs on that mountain path. Currently, I am training to take my three kids to the Philmont Scout reservation in New Mexico. I should be taking similar trails to that for a couple weeks next June.
JD the view is just amazing. You did survive the walk. The Eagles nest is just a place visited for the dignitaries. And Erik made a great point on the photo album.Thank you!
💯👍👊
👍🏻
Thank you so much for doing this, that trip is on my bucket fo sure,I’ll make it happen soon I hope 🙏 til then thanks again JD❤
Matt and Erik are leading a tour in March 🙂
I have to say, you are living my dream life. Been fascinated by WWII, particularly the European theater, since I was a kid. My uncle was a member of the 106th Golden Lions, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge outside St. Vith. His story of the battle is harrowing (I have the typewritten pages he wrote when he got home about his experiences during the BotB). It is a bucket list item to follow his path and then tour Poland and Germany. Living vicariously through your videos in the meantime.
My Grandfather fought his way there with the 502nd. I hope i get to go there some day to see the same lanscape he saw. Thanks for sharing this trip with those of us who haven't been able to see it for themselves.
JD, I had the privilege of traveling to the Eagles Nest on October 16, 2023 and your video does a fantastic job of capturing the breathtaking views and essence of the Eagles Nest. The first snow of the season (1 inch) the night before gave it a magical feeling. I was too chicken to take the walk up or down, did a round trip on Hitlers elevator instead!
Another fantastic video capturing a real “bucket list” experience!
Oh man. This was filmed in October. Must have just missed each other.
@@TheHistoryUnderground I was there on October 16th. I am a fan and subscriber of yours so I would have approached you if I had seen you! I’m a career salesman so I am not bashful either.
@@vanroeling2930 - Dude. We were there the 14th 😅
I’m sorry we missed each other by only 2 days - I would’ve loved to have met you!
Love the work into showing this for those unable to get there JD.👍🏻🇮🇪🇺🇸
Glad to share the experiences.
Up to the tri colour 😀👍🏻
@@ray44f @ray44 I’m glad you like it sir, thank you honestly as you just never know the dislikes it gets.
JD your videos never cease to amaze me, I know I will more than likely never get a chance to travel there so I am grateful that guys like you bring these places to me in the comfort of my living room, but as a self proclaimed WWII history geek, I am insanely envious, I can only imagine being able to visit the places you have taken us.
Glad to share the experiences. 🙂
Im so glad they didnt bomb the eagles nest . Its a glimps of history that can never be replaced . Im glad to see that they have kept it intact . Thank you for sharing your trip with all of us .
One of my "Bucket List" destinations.
👍🏻
One of the most beautiful & historic places I’ve ever sat and had a beer.
WOW, another great vid, you all are the best, thank you very much this is why as a family we always watch your content, just the best on youtube.
I am big fan of band of brothers 101st airborne Division can't wait for the next one 👍⭐
👊🏻
Always a sad moment when your videos end. Thank you for putting out awesome material!
Only recently found your channel. So thankful I did. Just want to tell you how appreciative I am of the outstanding content and education you provide. Outstanding mate. Much love and respect from Liverpool England❤️
I thought the last series of videos couldn't be topped. Obviously, I was wrong. Great work!
Wow, thanks!
Great Job JD, way to take one for the team and go up that mountain!!!! Why are people so fast to pull the trigger on destroying History! Rather it be good or bad, It's History that we should never forget. I liked how you put it about the good guys beat the bad guys! And made that spot good again!!!! Only you said it better!!! Thank you for all you do Brother! You and Erik Rock!
People who look at places like this and say they should be destroyed are thinking with their glands and not their brains, and I'm being charitable with my words.
Loving your stuff JD, & thank you & Eric for what you do, much appreciated 👍
Much appreciated
after watching band of brothers I came and watch your videos 😊...and detailed I found out ...thank you for this informative video... watching from Qatar 🇶🇦
Thank you so much 😀
Fantastic shots as usual
Excellent video! I’m glad you gave a great explanation about why The Eagle’s Nest was preserved.
My unit in Germany after Desert Storm made a trip for the weekend to Bertches Garden. Beautiful Resort and area
So cool to see this video! Also really cool to have talberts actor there too! Love your channel and BoB! Can’t wait for Masters of the Air!
Thanks! Anxious for that new series myself.
Matt Leitch did a excellent job portraying Floyd Tolbert. Floyd was known to be a tough SOB and serious when things got rough. He captured that perfectly. He even captured the essence of “the night of the bayonet” with style! Of course Floyd shouldn’t have been wearing a German poncho around at night on US lines! 😂 😂
M xx
Taking a tour group of students here soon - thanks for the video!
I read an account of a soldier who was there in 1945. He said that only officers could use the elevator and that enlisted men had to use the footpath. He also stated Eisenhower came for a visit and took down the sign announcing this and threw it off the mountain. After he left the guy was tasked with going down to find it and bring it back.
Stunning as always. Thanks, JD!
JD thank you for another amazing video and the view is incredible so beautiful and greetings from United Kingdom 🇬🇧
👊🏻
Nice one again JD! I was there in May and its one of the, maybe the, most beautiful place I've ever been!
Its great it wasnt bombed. I can imagine someone doing it for the hell of it, but the soldiers definitely respected the plans to bomb only the critical locations. Great video JD!
Very cool thank you for making a few videos on this very interesting topic.
Awesome video JD as always. As you were walking up the path, you crossed over what looks like a buried steel rail that lies across the path. Do you know what that is?
Not sure.
Was thinking why the Berghoff was bombed and destroyed,....this is interesting to learn about the Eagles Nest
👍🏻
great video and nice explanations of the movie scenes and the making of the band of brothers movie. they sure had me fooled. thanks for the history lesson. im sure thats a tuff hump up to the eagles nest. ill ride the elevator
👍🏻
Just got my books I ordered from ya in today... Thanks again, Big fan
Cheers!
Awesome! Thank you!
I had a friend who was a photographer with the US army during WW2. He photographed the Eagles Nest at the end and was probably there with Easy Company. He had wht he said was Hitlers photo album and a signed copy of Mein Kampf. I saw them in 1989. This supports the theory posited about Hitler's staff making multiple copies of the album.
JD, I was told that the Eagles Nest was a tea house for Eva. Hitlers was in another location on the mountain and destroyed in the bombing. If you can clear that up that would be great. Thank you for all you do.
amazing as always JD !!!! one day ill get there !!!!
I have been lucky to gone to Berchtesgaden many times. My dad being stationed in Germany, so was I. Then after I separated from AF I stayed in Germany, 13 years. I fully understand too why Hitler chose this area. It is simply stunning scenery. I am most happy in the mountains. The Hotel Gen Walker (Platterhof) was a place I stayed many times. I agree JD, this celebrates US Victory more than honors Nazis/Hitler. I realize some will twist it that way, and that's fair, but I choose to think about his destruction and defeat.
Were you on an outdoor program called Hallowed Ground Outdoors?
Love all the history content.
Yep! Sure was. Glad that you’re enjoying the history stuff. 🙂
Fabulous place some workout getting there if slipped of there be falling for a week 😂 great videos
😅
Love the videos and the stories. Was E company only there to sightsee and gather souvenirs? Seems the only reason seeing it had already been taken.
Pretty much.
If you can get access to the lower tunnels and offices, you must. It's not a public tour, you have to find an authority to open and show you around. You're there , this is far greater than the public tour you showed.
If you have a contact, let me know. 😅
Awesome video JD I will get there one day
It's so strange anyone could be a fan of history and want history to be destroyed. It's existence isn't a threat.
Agreed, but dang. You wouldn't believe the number of people leaving comments on the last video that wanted to see that structure blown to heck. Crazy.
*Its
How to always give them all the stuff in my house that is not OK if you, you poor man I love you man
What some people may not understand is, the kehlsteinhaus is being used for profit. The building naturally transitioned to a restaurant and tourist site. Basically, local Germans are making a living from the tourism being generated. They sell a book at the gift shop, or did anyway, that describes some peculiar facts and circumstances surrounding the tea house, since it’s inception. German taxpayers paid for the construction of the tea house, they deserve to gain the profits of their investments.

Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Thanks
So well done!
JD Another GREAT Video Dude, I was just curious, what's it like meeting all these Actors who played in Band Of Brothers? Do they fully understand the Significance band Of Brothers played in History?
Awesome once again!
❤ love this
Thanks!
Glad ya'll survived the climb up to the Eagles Nest. Out of curiosity, how long was the route up there? Great video JD!
My favorite part is that it's clearly now being used as a cell/broadcast/satellite tower. That's the most stereotypical German utilitarian/practical thing.
Hearing that people want the Eagle's Nest destroyed, what a waste of invaluable history that would be. No matter what the history, it needs to be preserved. So much was sacrificed to finally capture this building, and its existence ensures we can remember all of those sacrifices and they will not be in vain.
Thanks, a really interesting watch.
How long did it take to walk up to the top..a good way to burn off a few calories as well as take in the stunning scenery.
Thank you.
Thank You for Your due diligence, respect, understanding for history and passion You all contribute sincerely 🫡
You've got the best job in world JD 🍻
Glad to share the experiences. 🙂
Hey JD, have you ever done a static line jump?
It's sad how what we would consider a "hike" was just a walk up in the old days.
Excellent video!
What time is the best for travelling there?
Awesome JD
A complete Trophy of War!
2:14 This dude looks like he is in Rush. Those views spectaculor; I would be listening to Wagner's Ring without words by von Karajan on my head set. The irony is that those who think stuff like this should be destroyed are the monsters, and they are doing everything they can to destroy much U.S. history. It is good that you appreciate and call attention to such sites.
You mentioned in the beginning, "Tea Room," which reminded me of Hitler's Teahouse. Have you been there? I imagine it would make a cool video, as it is not well known and harder to find.
Haven’t been there yet.
All the more hard to find that it doesn't exist anymore.
Agreed. Just a "foundation", if that is what you want to call it. But the view from there is still identical to period photos from wwii. makes for a neat "then" and "now"@@frontenac5083
JD needs to hire A sherpa❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮😮😊 It could come in so Helpful
Great content
Well said.
When was this filmed mate? Reason I ask is the weather, I was going to go a few weeks ago but it's closed due to weather.
This was filmed back in October.

Hey JD😊
Hey!
Rip to those ww2 soldiers who didnt make it home alive or even home at all🙏🏻
great vid again
I have pics of me in 2023 in front of a building in Bastogne and was shown pics of Hitler emerging the unit. Lots of then and now pics I got to take with the nut case.
Is this the footage you lost in Athens?
Nope. This was shot after.
Is Erik sunburned?
Take ya glasses of Talbot.
DAMN THAT'S NICE AND BEAUTIFUL ITS JUST SAD WHAT HOW EVIL HITLER WAS .TO ALL THE SOLDIERS 🙏🇺🇸 THANKS FOR THE VIDEO VIDEO 👍😉
I've been there what a beautiful place outside its associations with the Nazis of course
Not really interested when Erik presents.
Well. I feel sorry for you then. Erik is a wealth of knowledge and I love when he brings artifacts to his presentations, a modern day "show and tell" if you will! Learning is powerful and I love to hear about history.
Whether it is to glorify a monster or to commemorate a victory by Allied forces, you can't destroy something like this. No matter how much people want to try, you cannot erase history. Get tf over it!
