Virago Prototype Kick Starter - Part 1: Design and Build

  • Fabrication of my trial Kick Starter for a 1st Gen Virago. I've never seen one done and wanted to see if the TCI would even fire the plugs with only a 1/4 turn of rotation. Turns out that it will !!!(there's a Part 2 of the video where I install it and kick start it). Now I can work out a design that will provide more rotation so it doesn't have to be indexed to the beginning of the compression stroke to fire. Wish me luck on the final design !!

What a mind. This has been amazing to watch. Cad drawings to mills, to setting on floor cutting off teeth! I wonder if 70 is too late to take metal shop? Right, I don’t have this talent.

Thanks man ! Yep, I do have fun going from concept to the actual build and enjoy getting my hands dirty as much as doing the drawings and layouts. It’s never too late to pick up a hobby in my opinion…just have to think up something you are really interested in to make, then figure out what’s needed (tool wise) to do it. One of the small metal lathes I have came from a guy that all he did was make oversized wooden golf tees on it since he couldn’t find a golf tee tall enough for his liking lol ! He made and sold them to pay for his hobby (he was retired so he played golf all of the time). Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

You could spend weeks going back through the owner groups posting "ha" to everyone saying it couldn't be done. 🤣 I've seen a lot of people post "with enough money.." but I imagine the vision and the skill is more important than the $$. Awesome work!

Thanks ! Lol, yep I’ve seen quite a few of the old forum posts just like you said. Granted, with the 1 to 1 ratio for the trial one, it’s not near as fun to kick since the motor has to be indexed to the compression stroke, but it definitely confirms that one will work 👍. Time to work out a gear ratio for it so it will actually be more like a factory kicker. All the best ! Steve

Lol, thanks man ! I’m definitely not a millionaire and for sure not a genius...just really persistent when it comes to figuring things out that aggravate me, lol. Now that I’ve proven it to myself that it could be done, I can finalize a design and finally check it off my bucket list, lol. All the best ! Steve

Steve, I don't think these is anything you could not do if you put your mind to it. Way cool, man! I will wish you luck, but I really don't think you need it.

Thanks man ! I’m even more motivated now that it actually worked so hopefully I’ll be able to get a final design made up in a few months to try out 👍. All the best ! Steve

i also did the single carb conversion too . im running a single vm 30 and i simply love it . great starts , great idle , and SO easy to work on . if anyone tries this id be glad to share with them the basics of getting the jetting smoothed out .

thats pretty cool ( the innovation ) .
i have an 85 virago home built trike ( now 1100 cc ) . among my devices is a delco alternator , belt driven from the driveshaft , on the end of the rear camshaft is a twin set of ignition points , and i resolved the old starter gear grinding forever . i discarded the solenoid and made a lever that mechanically engages the intermediate starter gear . the start motor is controlled with a push button and ford relay so if the lever is between teeth i can bump the motor and then engage the gears easily . my setup is so reliable that it dont need the kickstart option .

Brilliant stuff !, you have some cool gear to work with, and great skills. I had thought of using a dead-starter, and going through that other side. Essentially, rigging a kick-start to the end of the armature. Would have to beef-up the mounting-bolts in that area .got a drill-press and a couple of welders.... Dave, NZ

Thanks man ! It was a fun prototype build for sure (and even better that it actually worked, lol). Adding a kicker to the end of the starter would probably work I’d say as well if geared up so it made the motor shaft rotate fast like it does when powered 👍. If you go for it let me know how it goes...I’d say there’s several good ways to go about adding a kicker to one of these 👍👍👍. All the best ! Steve

    • @StevesDIYs

Thanks man…I do enjoy playing with these old bikes ! I believe the 1981 1st Gen bikes didn’t have the needed hole in the left side of the motor case, but most of the 1982 and 1983 motors had the needed mounting hole in the case due the fork shaft. If yours has the additional hole, then all you would need is the starter components and the left side cover from an ‘84 or ‘85 xv1000 to swap them out. If you use an ‘86 or newer xv750 or xv1100, you will probably also need the flywheel, stator, stator pickups, and even the Ignition Module (TCI) since the ‘86 and newer motors have a much different left side cover.

@@Daviddavid-hc4zi si, you could fabricate a small aluminum mount for the fork that pulls the Bendix gear and weld it to the motor case…I would imagine that would work 👍. For the pick up sensors, if you moved them to the correct location (the same location as the 1st Generation ones), they would probably allow for the spark to be timed correctly as well. It might be a lot of work, but it does sound like it should work 👍

Do you this as a kit for the 1100 virago

Hey ! I haven’t finished the final design for the 1st Gens (like this model), but hope to finish soon 👍. I bought a ‘89 1100 (2nd Gen) a few months ago so I could see what it would take to make one for the 1100’s as well, but it might be a bit before I can get it finished up. Once I have it finished up and tested, I’ll make a video of it as well so folks can see it in action. I do hope to be able to make a kit for folks as it’s pretty cool to be able to kick one over vs. just having the electric start👍. Keep a eye out for the video on the channel ! All the best, Steve

Thanks man 👍. Yep, one day I hope to have the final design complete for the kickstart (I’ve been saying that for about a year now, but just haven’t had the time to get it all drawn out and made, lol). I have all of the purchased stuff ready to go in a box, but gotta make the plates and shafts to connect it all together. Maybe this spring I’ll get enough time to dedicate to the final design build 🤞🤞🤞.
