  • How do you build a race car that goes fast? Faster than anyone else? I hung out with the fastest team at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to find out.
Full on-board video of Shute's winning run: • Pikes Peak 2021 Fastes...
Helmet cam: • Robin Shute | Full Run...
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a special breed of racing where the clever privateers and the big dollar factory teams race against each other, and the mountain, to 14,115 feet. I joined the winning team so that I could learn all their secrets of speed, and then share them with you.

I had a prof that always talked about The Perfect Racecar. The Perfect Racecar is the one that completes the race then immediately disintegrates. Anything more durable than that was overbuilt and too heavy.

+1 for that. I managed to get my hands on a VHS tape years ago about Britten's design/building/racing at Daytona. The fact that he brazed a crack in the cylinder wall the night before the race, and the only reason the bike lost was due to a Ducati regulator was amazing. Him jumping up and down like a kid at Christmas seeing the bike run so well is still one of the most poignant, beautiful things I've seen.
Absolute legend, absolute genius. I didn't even know the man personally, and still felt the loss of his passing.

Thank you, as always, for a delightful video.
    A) Wow, Shute is SMOOTH.
    B) Yes, racing are hard. I think most new racers underestimate the effort it takes just to arrive at the track, on time, with functional equipment... doubly so if you're not a trustafarian. For example, I roadraced motorcycles for 6 years. The first race of my second season, I left my helmet at home.
    C) I crewed for a sidecar team in 2011 (the last year of dirt sections, the year Monster Tajima broke 10 minutes.) It was one of the best experiences of my life. Everything about it just seems designed to amp up your emotions. The epic skill & bravery of the racers, the loyalty and grit in the face of adversity of the crews, the mind-boggling danger, the crazy hours, the bizarre sleeping arrangements, the basic difficulties of managing 10k people on a 2 lane road...
I need to go again, and I'd love to support a team again.

My take in aero at pike's peak is that with such elevation the airspeed in no corner comes close to what it is at sea level, and therefore the entire run is low and mid speed corners. With half the atmospheric pressure you have half the drag and downforce, so the wings these dudes have are just half as ridiculous as they look. My personal best was a 8:50 iirc in beamng

Used to live in a little town close by, Westcliffe, and would go see the many races they held at Pikes Peak. This was back in the late 90's when it wasn't completely paved and was more of a rally race than a time attack race. They raced everything from semi trucks, motorcycles, pretty much anything with a motor and wheels. A tidbit of trivia: The reason why you can drive a car all the way to the summit of the tallest mountain in the southern range of the Rockies is that Pikes Peak is a part of a much older mountain range that had eroded to the point where you could drive up it, essentially becoming a gigantic hill. The Rocky Mountain range with all of its sharp peaks came much later. If you're ever in the area also check out a place called Bishop's Castle. Worth the short trip from Colorado Springs.

Never mind Pike's Peak, this is one of the best explanations of race car engineering in general.
Winning races (ones with relatively few rules especially) does not come from power. It comes from lightness. Lower mass requires less work to brake, turn and accelerate. Lower mass makes everything more efficient. Being more efficient means you can win races with less engine power and lighter everything, including the engine.

Unreal their philosophy, most teams pushing as much HP as possible and these guys not even focusing on HP , needing just under 500 and worrying more about reliability using a not too far off stock Honda motor, just goes to show, trail breakers don’t follow anyone’s lead! Some people just have it too,..I jsut watched Travis Pastrana at good wood hill climb , a life long motorcross rider that is jsut talented and dedicated to an extreme in any Motorsport he tries , giving WRC a shot and being a top finisher immediately with no experience over life long WRC drivers. Going to good wood festival of speed with no practice except the couple days prior and winning multiple times over F1 cars!????? In a rally car??? Their brains are wired differently than about anyone on earth, it’s amazing! I got an even more impressed feeling watching these guys do their thing! Taking 1st place on the shorter climb and winning by 42 SECONDS over 2nd???? What the hell!?? To beat the $ 150B sponsor electric Volkswagen factory team putting over $80M into development of the car over its time and people working on it with one of the worlds best drivers ever, beat by a garage built evening mechanics & unpaid professionals volunteering time , developing the science themselves and a homegrown ballsy talented driver I’m just SO massively impressed by these guys! With their abilities and talent and record they ought to look for a big sponsor , a groundbreaking team like this winning with minimal everything could be regular victors and advertising for a sponsor , especially with sponsor money where they could get a component they would prefer that’s much more expensive instead of doing their best with what they can come up with, get them hotels for good rest or a Bus to sleep in , more days on the mountain thru the year while getting paid to relieve financial stress or worry about missing work, just a company that could jsut get them what they could use to be ever better and facilitate more time and funds for practice and car development. Paying for their own car in a race with no prize money I can assure you a team of friends are cutting corners to save $$ , imagine if these guys could build the car the way they’d exactly prefer to dominate , no settling for less expensive or affective components. They’d be king of the castle for some time. The sponsor would also have to stay the hell out of their way, make NO decisions foe the team , let them do their thing and facilitate what they need and when and a sponsor could really build an abominable team!!! They are true enthusiasts for sure! I can guarantee big teams and factory sponsored teams like Audi and Volkswagen have taken notice of these guys after beating their world record unlimited budget attempt. These guys could at this point apply to Factory teams or other racing arenas, Formula 1 , go to England and make a large income helping old retired F1 millionaires build and prepare for their hill climb, Audis motor sports development division would look at this reseme from jsut 2 years & be very interested to bring on minds like these to a top program but these guys focus on supporting their unpaid team and sacrificing for each other. True motor sports legends! Amazing!
Thanks for making this video and introducing me and others to thsi amazing team! I’ll follow them now!

The "Less power is better power" is my motto for engine tuning. Everyone wants to brag about peak HP with crazy cam lift and duration, but really no one like to drive that. I always calculate what cam I think I want, and get the slightly tamer camshaft. You'll rarely regret getting a broader power band but you may never drive a car with too hot of a camshaft.

I drove Pikes Peak in a Datsun 260z about 35 years ago, on a regular day, not a race. Some parts were scary as hell. I lived in Denver at the time and went skiing often. I can’t imagine racing it. I also took the cog-wheeled train to the top once. The views and drop-offs were even more dramatic.
I look forward to your race coverage next year.

Whoda thunk one of the keys to victory would be ordering a 'fast and furious' engine off eBay! Too bad no dramatic close-ups of thumb hitting the nitrous button tho.

Great job telling the privateer story! Much more engaging than just a 6 min pov of the actual run... Matt - you're a man of many talents, film-making is just one of them!

I bet Next year will be crazy as the 100th anniversary is 2022. I never saw how the bears got out hopefully they just climbed down and ran away. Definitely had a lot of eyes on them though

10 years later Loeb is still the record man with thermal engine, beaten only by one electric car.
He is THE best car racer of all time. WRC is not just turning around on a circuit...

I want to build a race car... I want to carry a checkered flag... I loved this video! Great to see so much more in-depth on one of the fastest cars on Pikes Peak! Never would have gotten to see all that with a factory team! Especially not narrated and filmed by a hilarious car nut!
