The Evernew clone does have one cool feature. You can simmer by putting the pot directly on the stove(after it has reached full bloom)without the need for a simmer ring or a pot stand. It also will give you surprisingly long burn times in this mode.
Good choice Robert. I stopped a little before the end so may have missed something BUT the Trangia has a lid, so no need to burn it out: just snuff it out and use the remaining fuel another time. So it saves fuel.
Yes you are absolutely right, but to make a fair comparison I wanted to use both the same way and to save the weight of the lid and simmer ring. But, probably it saves more weight in fuel then the weigh on the simmer and lid together…especially on longer hikes!
I use the evernew stove with pot stand with either a Soto thermostack set or a Titanium mug depending on what i am doing. The evernew blooms much faster than the boundless "copy" stove that you have tried out. The evernew was expensive but i believe it is worth the extra money. For a simple robust quick boil it is hard to beat. I have had gas stoves fail in the past with seals getting damaged or the jet blocked.
Yea the Evernew is a more quality item for sure that works better, but I have some ideas I will try and see if I can get the Boundless to prime faster. If I do…there will be a “Boundless hack” video 😄 the you are right…alcohol stoves will not fail on you 👍🏻 and that is a good thing!!
I have the Evernew and Trangia, and like them both. 👍 PaleoHikerMD has a video entitled "Evernew Titanium Stove vs Copycat: Is it Worth the Money?" where the much longer time-to-bloom of the Boundless Voyage burner is demonstrated. I agree with your assessment that the extra cost of the Evernew is worth paying. It is tempting to save money with a Chinese knockoff, but the performance is poor. 'Buy quality, only cry once'.
great review ! thank you. Subbed, your videos are fantastic glad I found them ! One thing I discovered online (and tried) is that by putting a tuna can lid under the boundless stove and adding a few drops of fuel you have a priming ring. My time to prime now is less than a minute. Trangia still fast probably due to the carbon felt inside stove though. And a windscreen is a must of course.
Thanks and welcome to the channel, probably nr 2000 👌🏻👍🏻 Yea a simmer ring is great and helps a lot for the stoves without a “felt”…always been unsure what to call that 😄 The boundless is otherwise a great stove…but now trying out a cheap canister stove from Naturehike…we’ll see how that turns out!
Your Evernew copy burner without wicking inside will start gasifying burning much faster by simply waving by hand as Hiram Cook adviced. The evaporation from holes gets wasted into air, but helping that start burning will heat up the burner much faster. Myself I am not much fan of my Tomshoo titanium burner , same as yours with a different name. Except using it without pot stand. Then it is very fuel efficient, slow of course. With stands it burns spirit fast.
I have a 40 years old Trangia and that needs 2-3 minutes to prime. I read about Trangia nowadays using fiberglass as a wick inside the double wall to prime quicker - maybe the Boundless Ti doesn't have a wick. I very much like the stainless Tatonka, which can hold much more fuel and allows for a longer burn time to cook a whole meal. It comes without a lid and a simmer-ring, so I had to DIY them. If I'm hiking in a woody area, my go-to stove is a wood-gas stove or a hobo, above the tree line it will always be a gas stove. Stay safe and a happy X-mas time
Happy Xmas time to You as well and yes, the boundless is hollow so no fibreglass or anything and that together with it being made in Titanium is probably the reason for the long priming time. Good to have a lid to save the remaining fuel must have been hard to DIY them? Good job! For me, gas most of the time as well but want to try the alcohol a bit more in the future as well.
@@shawndoyle6460 - there's a bunch of different "Trangia style stoves", some of which are awful (like yours), but some others are awesome and even better than the old Trangias, so it all depends on the manufacturer.
I haven't used a alcohol stove yet. I'm currently shopping for one. I do like my ozark trail gas burner. Not sure of the weight, but it's small. I have a very cheap esbit stove, which I've used just for fun. Honestly I'm not impressed with those tablets. Anyway, that's for your video. I appreciate it.
The material that the burner is made from makes a difference as well. The titanium cools extremely fast and in cold temperatures heats up slower. The same with alluminium burners. There is a reason the Trangia usually wins in cold weather and has stayed basically the same for so many years.
Found your channel after buying the boundless. It is my first alcohol stove so I’m a newbie to them. Only cost 18 usd with shipping so hope it works out.
Welcome to the channel 🙂 and yea, beside the little bit longer priming time it’s nothing wrong with the boundless, works just fine 👍🏻 but you need a windscreen, as always when it comes to alcohol stoves. Good luck 👍🏻
Use the one you have. These are only details, the important thing is to have a good time outdoors. Two minutes of extra boiling time is just two extra minutes or calmness. I also don't agree with the while waiting for blooming mindset. Just out the damn pot on to use up all the hear you can.
@@jamescoyne6836 So sorry, I missed this question from you!! But, Pete in below answer is correct. If you have one already use that or make in with tinfoil or buy yourself a titanium one. Easy to make yourself but also nice to buy small thing to build a perfect set. Regarding the blooming and to wait or not we’ll my experience is that it can easily go out if you out the pot on too soon…but that mainly comes down to the type of pot stand you have.
I use trangia for years. Exelent product. Peace of advice, in cold weather like -15 i cary burner in my pocket. If fuel gets very cold you could have problem lighting it up.
Yep I can only agree and going to do a video in the future about performance in really cold weather and to keep the lighter close to your body is one important thing to remember for sure 🙂👍🏻
keep a small fuel bottle in your pocket and If you set your trangia on a bit of foil and spill a little fuel around it, when this burns off it will pre heat the stove and help it bloom quicker on very cold days.
Had two brass copies of the Trangia, the Highlander one was almost as good but the Chinese copy was not very good. Started using a tin with a fire rope in it, light and cheap, it's fine for boiling water on a day hike but not so good for longer journeys. Just got an aluminium Tomshoo alcohol burner, not very solidly built but extremely light. Might need a plastic container to protect it on longer journeys. Haven't had a chance to use it yet. I've experimented over time and some of the burners seem to work much better with taller pot stands than what you generally get, especially with Chinese copies.
Thanks for sharing and yea, even the Trangia works better with a bit more distance to the pot and I actually have tried with the pot stand used in the movie to use it upside down… works better 😄👍🏻 so my experience as well.
Probable this Boundless Ti don't have wick in internal camera, what help in priming time, Trangia have a line wick, and Evernew a fiberglass wick. Anyway, use a metal lid under the Boundless Ti with some drops of alcohol for preheating, should have more fast priming. Traildesigns sell prime pan for $2.99.
Yep You are right, and in the beginning the Trangia didn’t have a wick inside either. It’s a good way to preheat for sure, but I don’t like the “fuss” and the extras …but thanks 👍🏻
i use the trail designs Caldera Cone with Kojin alcohol stove and 8oz bottle of fuel for most of my solo trips. if I'm going with a group i typically take my BRS 3000 canister stove.
Good choices…have the BRS as well but find the Amicus easier to control the flame and less wind sensitive so usually bring that one instead. But nothing beats the BRS regarding weight 👍🏻 and cheap to!!
Just measured 14 mm, and if turned upside down 28 mm. I believe the 14 to be a little bit too close and if you put the pot on to soon it can smother the fire. The one you get with the Boundless is 16 mm so slightly better.
@@roberthammenrudh thanks for going to the trouble of measuring for me. Do you fancy going in to business with me making ones that sit higher up 🙂. Evernew do actually make one that is 40mm on the legs , so it puts it approx. 25mm above the burner the right way up

Thanks for a good review. A bit off topic but Speaking of the Soto Amicus. Do you have any support for the canister other than the ones that nature gives? I find mine a bit unstable with just a canister.
Thanks 😊 and no, no extra support event though they are quite light weight (the orange ones) but find it to be stable enough. Only use the 500 ml pot and can imagine the bigger the pot, the more need of a stand.
For saving fuel yes, a cap is great to put out the flame and save it for another day. But to get a fair comparison I wanted to get it out of the picture… if I use the Trangia I always bring the simmer ring and the cap.

Ok! The comparison is unfair. The Trangia Burner and the Evernew stove both contain a wick that makes the stove bloom faster. The boundless Voysge does not have any wick inside like a penny stove.
