I can't help but love this hedgehog as well. He's had his fair share of troubles for sure, but I just absolutely love a lot of the games. And yes, I'm one of the ones that says Unleashed is a very good game. And by that, I mean my favorite game of all time. You can say he doesn't need good games, but he does have a lot of them. I'm not that much of a movie person either, but the movies are pretty good. But yeah, Sonic is my favorite franchise ever, and I don't think anything can change that.
I liked Unleashed, too... until I got to Eggman Land. Still enjoyed the majority of the game, though, so I do get it and saying it's your favorite is nowhere near the weirdest Sonic take I've heard.
'Cause he looks cool and doesn't care, man. Everyone I know who never played the games, still generally like him and expect him to get games. It's a once in a lifetime character design.
They were going after Mario and, from what I read, they put a lot of effort into making sure his design was ready. Really gotta respect Sega's creative team.
i think the simple answer really, is that sonic is more of a media franchise at this point than a game franchise. it's the same reason pokémon can get away with releasing games that just keep gradually getting worse than the last, removing more and more features and having less polish.
Just like how Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda & Mega Man, Sonic The Hedgehog is still loved.

Played a bit of that and enjoyed it. Maybe I should stream it at some point.

I could see you thinking of it more as a brand, sure, and people certainly can be very loyal to their preferred brands.
Now answer the important question: What's your favourite Sonic game?
That'll have to wait until my Top 20 video... which I really need to get around to typing out, though I might already have the Sonic part written.
Capitalism
Certainly a succinct way to put it.
