So beautiful. My cat is loving this right now. She recognizes the instrument because I play it. Besides snacks and brushings... listening to the Hammered Dulcimer is her favorite thing. I can tell that your music touches her as it does me.
It's as if.... a piano, a guitar and a harp meshed together.
Meshed, not played in unison.
Then sometimes it resembles even a cello.
Amazing.
Wow! Awesome observations. That is exactly how I hear the hammered dulcimer. I often hear a cello in my head while playing. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
@@JoshuaMessick thanks to you for bringing such beauty into the world! In these days of shout and madness, some peace and harmony is precious! Keep up the good work!
@@francescodarcangeli4197 Thank you! :)
You bring much beauty to the world, Joshua.
it s a a sunshine on this rainy autumn rain the sound of dulcimer hammered i so lovely
Thanks so much! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos.
Your compositions are scintillating and your performance of them delighting and smile-inducing, so glad I happened upon your channel. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing! I have been wanting to build my own hammered dulcimer with 20/20+19 extended range configuration from scratch and learn to play it. It may be a challenge to make this for the first time builder. But, that's the only way to learn. I did the same thing nearly 45 years ago while learning the art of stained glass. I undertook a very difficult project and learned from that experience. It turned out wonderful, BTW. Doing simple things, you get experience in bits and pieces. Difficult things throw all sort of things at you at the same time and you sort them out as you go along: mistakes and all. That's how I would approach building my own hammered dulcimer and learn to play it by improvising, adapting and overcoming obstacles; just like when I was in the USMC 52 years ago.
I'm sure that you will excel in building your dulcimer. I wish you the best of luck and success in this new undertaking.
Enchanting! Absolutely enchanting!
That was the most beautiful music .
It was so relaxing and peaceful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Just beautiful. The country harpsichord.
I am in awe with your talent and the beautiful sound that comes out! 🍂🍁
Thank you! Cheers!
Your music balances out the foul language of the rap I have to endure at work
Glad you enjoy it!
But bitch I said what I said..
No matter how many times I watch this, I still get a kick out of the "woohoo" at the end! It's like you know you've done your best and the result is perfection...
I appreciate your gift Sir Joshua!
Aww, thank you Michael! Woohoo!! lol
Une très belle mélodie et des sonorités envoûtantes en parfaite osmose avec les images de nature.
This song is so beautiful. I also like your choice of location! 🌞
Thank you, Tom! ;-)
Woohoo is right! Well done, sir! Very enjoyable, and I appreciated the shift in tone at 1:10 (and later reprise). It gave a lively, energetic feel, like a sudden gust, before returning to the peaceful main theme. I really enjoy rain storms like these. Keep it up!
Thank you! :-)
Yeah this guy is incredible, honestly I haven't found him playing anything that didn't surprise me. I wish there were more hammer dulcimer players out there. It's an amazing instrument especially in the hands of our friend Josh.
Beautiful, Joshua. We miss you in North Carolina.
Thank you, Matthew ;-)
Gotta love the dulcimer!
Wow Joshua - I love this melody. The video is very well shot and edited too. Great work.
Tony Lee Glenn Thank you, Tony!!
That mute effect is super cool! Thanks for this beautiful performance
My 7-week-old is loving this on repeat. Well done, man.
So awesome to hear! Thanks for watching, Michael and 7-week-old ;-)
Soothes a wounded soul, is what it does.
I am very glad to hear this, GramGram. Thanks for watching and commenting.
So beautiful!
Another great piece of music just wondering if these are original recordings, for if they are Joshua is a rare breed of human that actually brings beauty into this world
Thank you for the thoughtful comment, Donald. Autumn Rain, and many others on my channel, are original compositions. Thanks for watching! Also, I am very sorry for the slow reply -- I've spent the past few months moving 1200 miles West to Colorado Springs. I'm finally settled in and have time to devote to this channel. I appreciate you!
I love this music!!!! I hope that someday I may learn to play a hammered dulcimer, but if not it will be fine to know that there are people like you who play it wonderfully. Take care and GOD BLESS
Tom Cleverley Thank you, Tom! It’s awesome to hear you enjoyed the music. I hope you can learn the hammered dulcimer, too. Please stay connected, ok?
@@JoshuaMessick I will try. My wife and I are recently transplants (moved) to the Bluegrass State, East of Lexington. Take care and GOD BLESS

this one is good too
Thank you! :-)
I love hearing you play, I was introduced to the hammer dulcimer music when I was in my early teens. Hearing you play reminds me of that time, everything around me disappears and it's just me and the music! Such beautiful music, thank you for sharing your gift with us!!
Wow, thank you! Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. You are very appreciated!
Simply beautiful. I could listen to you all night.

Sometimes I put my earbuds in and turn this peice down quietly and let it put me to sleep. I guess you could say it my sleep meditations .
Wow, thanks Mark! That's wonderful. I'm so glad the music brings you a sense of peace. Music helps me be calm, too. That's one of the main reasons I play :-)

I've always loved this song, since I listen to it for the firs time you are, for me, the best hammered dulcimer player and composer of the world
Marc Serra Why thank you, Marc! 🙏 That was a very thoughtful comment :)
Do you teach hammered dulcimer?
Marc Serra hey Marc, I am not accepting new students right now. Sorry! I’d check with dulcimercrossing.com and dulcimerschool.com.
Wow. I’m so deeply moved by this. Very well done
IvorySorrows Thank you! Super glad you enjoyed it. All the best, Joshua
At first I thought you were playing the First Noel. I loved that, it sounded like my old clock that would play the bells every hour to a familiar tune.
HA! Too funny. The A part does have a similar feel as The First Noel; I've never noticed that or had somebody make that observation. Isn't it amazing how similar music can be while still being drastically different? Sometimes, it's a wee bit of a mystery how that works. Thanks for listening!
Joshua Messick you’re welcome, can you do your variation of the first Noel different than Timothy Seaman’s version? All I know is the way he does it, I like to accompany you tubers on my piano just for fun.
adam flory Thanks man! I’ve already recorded The First Noel - it’s on my album “Hammered Dulcimer Christmas, Vol. II”. You can snag it on Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc. Or on CD from joshuamessick.com
Amazing as always. Been a fan since I first discovered you a couple of years ago
Thanks so much Scott! I appreciate you.
This is so beautiful! You've got serious talent buddy!

love it as always! ( also is it just me who gets ringtone vibes at 1:07 )
Ha! I've never thought of that before, but it could be a nice ring tone ;-)
Beautiful! Thank You.
I love this song!!!!!
Liz Brown thanks a million, Liz! Glad you enjoy it :) stay in touch, ok?
Simply amazing!
Simply superb.
Dear Joshua,
You are the one who creates a lot of unconventional methods of playing the Dulcimer.
I see there are differences between the Dulcimer you play with others like Mr. Seaman, Mr. Ted Yoder and others. What are the different Dulcimer variations available.
Me: ooh relaxing music
Domino's Ad: MWAHAHAHA
I sure do wish there was another way to make some money with music on TH-cam... but, many folks have just stopped buying it and instead stream it. Ads are how artists get paid for streams.
@@JoshuaMessick yeah, I understand that. That must really suck for the musicians on TH-cam.
Also, thanks for replying! Love your music :)
I love this (:
Thank you :-)
inspiration to aspiring hammered d players

Hey, I remember this song! Do you also know Starships Are Sailing?
DementedDimension12 Thanks for watching! I’m not familiar with Starships are Sailing... sorry! Please stay connected. Best, Joshua
Joshua, first of all well done. I speak from experience. I played my hand made (from a Dusty Strings kit) h. dulcimer in the 80's & early 90's. I played for about a dozen weddings (several were friends), a Carlton College play, and the MN Renaissance Festival with a contract, not just 'on the grid' for tips.
Bottomline, is this your custom dulcimer version you and Russell Cook created? Is this the dulcimer you prefer, over your Jerry Read Smith dulcimer?! I've always planned to get a JRS dulcimer, because his always seemed to be the Stradivarius of the Hammered Dulcimer world. But, I always seemed to notice something missing in the tone. I could never articulate what that was, but I've been more drawn to the Russell Cook dulcimers as of late. You, Ted Yoder, and Ruth Smith seems to have custom versions of Russell Cooks dulcimers. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for the music...
David, thanks for the comment! Yes, I helped design a new dulcimer with Master Works. Let’s chat. Please give me a call or email me. My contact info is at JoshuaMessick.com.
I have a question for you, good sir! I recently acquired a dulcimer, and can noodle out single note melodies, but am not sure what to do beyond that... Would you ever mind doing a skype lesson? Mine is a 16/15 for reference
Congratulations on your new instrument! That is very exciting. Thanks for asking about lessons, but I am not accepting new students right now. I wish you much success with your new musical journey.
Try Dizzi Dulcimer, she does online lessons 😊
@@Solitude11-11 Good to know! I need to re tune the poor thing soon
@@RecorderChicka If you go to her website you can join an online FB group that has loads of info including tuning etc. Good luck with the dulcimer! It’s a great instrument
Where can I buy hammered dulcimers?
Hey there, Yeppy! I actually sell them at JoshuaMessick.com
May I just say something? I really enjoy the work of your hammered dulcimer. I was surprised, and a little disappointed to find that all of your albums have added other layers of sound on top of the dulcimer. Don't get me wrong, I am not against musical collaboration. It is just that I really love the stuff you post on TH-cam that is live recorded, solely hammered dulcimer, nothing added. I think that your collaborative stuff is also quality, but I don't know if you have considered releasing your work more in a "live recording" format. Let me know!
As a composer, I don't see myself as just a hammered dulcimer player, and I enjoy exploring all types of music. This includes ensemble and solo music. Even though I don't play all of the instruments, it still see it as my creative work.
Many folks enjoy both of my approaches; other enjoy just solo or just ensemble -- I get that. I try to create a balance of both ;-) This is also true of my TH-cam channel -- sometimes I have guest musicians with me, other times I play solo. I have playlists for both.
If you'll sample my albums a little more extensively, you'll find there are quite a few solo selections on my albums. The Entrance of Sound is a solo album, Woodland Dance has 5 solo tracks, Hammered Dulcimer Christmas, Vol 1 has 8 solo tracks, etc. etc. etc.
Except for Desire for Departure, my albums are raw acoustic music. It's real musicians playing live....
I am working on an second solo album right now. It's a project I'm enjoying working on. If you'd like to join my mailing list at joshuamessick.com, you will be notified when it is released.
Plot twist, his wife sent him outside to rake the leaves but instead...
ha!

I've recently bought an east anglian hammered dulcimer, awesome sound but not compared to this guy :)
