I followed the Jurek and Meltzer records closely and have nothing but respect for them. What an accomplishment. But... THIS is how the record should be. No hype. No sponsors. You did it harder, MUCH harder, and in the most pure way possible with so little hype or recognition. It's inspired me in a way that Jurek and Meltzer did not. Thank you. Congrats!
Congrats Joe!!! I had the pleasure of Joe (Stringbean) being a guide for a group of us who were hiking in Yosemite in September of 2021. Joe is a wealth of information and a real pleasure to get to know. Every time I google his name, I learn something new about this amazing person. Keep it Joe, and may our paths cross again.
Having just read Scott Jurek's account of his supported record, and having some dim sense of how hard that shit was, it is literally unbelievable to me that a human could do what Joe did. What a beautiful human being, too. Way to go, Joe.
This is amazing. Joe's parents are all of our parents. Trying to make profound "here we go on this journey," and mom pipes in "sweetie, I think the camera is off." "No it's not mom." Hahaha
Hard to go to sleep tonight. Also hard to believe I had already finished my thru hike over a month before you started. You never mentioned the heat but I can't imagine how hard the heat made it. THIS IS AN AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!! ~ER 71
Congrats man, this is impressive! I know from experience that hiking for 24 hours is miserable and don’t know how you did it, but love hearing the story. One step at a time, no sleeping in, more than just a way to hike, a way to live. Good luck with everything you do!
I thru hiked nobo in 2017 and ran into this guy early one morning on a peak somewhere in Vermont. It's pretty cool to be able to say I met him and am able to include that experience whenever I tell my AT story to people. -Rootbeer
Just saw this video recommended on The Trek as one of the top 13 videos to watch while quarantined. I watched this one first because I did the AT in 2017 and met Stringbean somewhere in Maine. He actually chatted with me for a few minutes. I had no idea that he was closing in on the FKT. Only found that out after I finished.
Bill Jensen thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! We weren’t even aware of that list, so thank you for bringing it to our attention. Looks like we have 12 more films to watch!
so cool to see from his point of view...loved following along..22 days to do half..holy crap dude..loved the part about the folks and the culture on trail you spoke of...thanks for the NOT THAT BAD shutout about dirty jersey..😀
Your story inspired us on our journey. Love this short vid. 3 things he highlights beautifully: 1. The power of breaking large goals into small tasks 2. Walking in the woods is the best way to meet people 3. Who get's weeeded out on the AT? (SPOILER: trying to make others happy) Thanks for telling your story! - Ben
Very inspiring. I'm an out of shape office worker. I'm planning on a 2022 attempt at the age of 40. Need to lose 70lbs first though. Trail name Old School.
Met him in NJ on switchbacks near Pochuck mountain. My son Nicholas is autistic and has no functional speech, but loves to hike. Nicholas was trudging up the small mountain and I noted how he hates climbs, Stringbean slowed up and said “ a 500 foot climb is still a 500 foot climb”. Then I noted that we were section hiking the AT (still are) and we’re going to Vermont in two weeks. He said he would be past there by then and how he was trying to set the record. We then stated our appreciation and he said Nicholas was his hero. Wow, my other son Tyler still talks about that. Richard Brahm (Flippertree)
Epic Brother... Epigentetics... Thank you for raising the bar and sharing your passion, It is so very much appreciated... Big, big trail love and smiles and smiles and smiles :)
Thanks Adam! I appreciate you checking out all three of the docs. Joe did a really phenomenal job in this one filming himself since the self-supported FKT rules prevented him having any crew. It added some time to the day but feels worth it for some of the shots he was able to capture
Congratulations to Joe on his fkt! For someone who has not run in a race since elementary school, who watches these documentaries on fkt's and ultas, I find it so inspiring, to see this. I tell myself that I probably am not going to ever have an fkt, but I can get out there, and run up that hill. Where there is a will, there is a way. You plan, you put your mind to it, and you commit. Is not everything like that, just ask yourself, what's your roadblock thats stopping you? Most roadblocks are mental.
Congrats and deep respect. To pull this off self-supported and even beat the record is amazing. Seems like now every year a new record is accomplished. In 2018 a guy from Belgium made it in 41d 7h, but it was an easy supported run 😉. Wondering what we will see in 2019...?
Easy ? Nothing about hiking this trail in less than the normal 5 to 6 months it takes a normal person to do it is easy. Completing the whole trail in itself is not an easy task no matter the amount of time it takes or whether you are supported or unsupported.
41 days? Crickey! That's still incredible for supported, although I'd still say that 45 days unsupported is still quite a bit harder than 41 days supported. So basically we're on the same page Karsten. Are you aware of any more records since you wrote your comment? I should get out there, I'm sure I can do it unsupported and with only 15 sleeps, I'll sleep every 2 days and complete it in 30 days. Edit: Actually I could probably do it in 20 days because I can also run very fast, I've got stupid endurance as well as incredible anaerobic fast-twitch capacity.
This was lovely to watch. Stringbeans huge accomplishment was also during one of the wettest thruhike seasons in several years. I think Sabbe would have had much harder a time setting the new record by 4 days even supported. I wonder who will beat it this year..
Amazing accomplishment ! and to be self supported? Wow! You were so determined and yet the best part is you have so much humility! kudos to your parents! 👍
Look at that, you carried all your gear and still beat the supported record, you were carrying a damn backpack! You are a MACHINE. What was your baseweight and how many miles did you do in the last stretch before Katardin, I assume that was the place you did the most miles without sleep?
GREAT questions. What a day... I did a 37 hour push for 110.8 miles, if my memory serves me correctly. My biggest day prior to that was 64 in PA. My baseweight was around 8 lbs
only 10 hours separated you and Meltzers time?! that is fuckin insane. That's literally making the decision to get up those 10 minutes early only a handful of times... or deciding to night hike an extra 3 miles to a stealth spot a few times. Damn. Well done, well fucking done.
I know alex honnolds achievement is great but this is hard to comprehend for just an average everyday piece of hiker trash. You are an amazing individual thank you so much for your video
@@bretthikez6567 Oh right. Well even if he got some battery support at one point it's still smashing the accomplishment of the fully-supported record. 100% supported vs 0.000000000000000001% supported and beat the 100% supported time. He was carrying damn backpack for crying out loud!
@@bretthikez6567 I don't know what headlamp he's using but I have to replace the batteries on my hiking headlamp every 3 hours. That would have been a nightmare keeping up with batteries unsupported, geez.
What do you eat to eat 8,000 - 12,000 calories in a day ? Bag after bag of Oreos ? Congrats on your accomplishment. Most can only dream of achieving something way less difficult.
I assume it would have to be high calorie dense foods, probably a lot of energy bars that include nuts, seeds, dried fruit, maybe he even cooked his own bars or squares in the oven and carried those with him. I'd say he would have been eating every hour and doing so while running.
I followed the Jurek and Meltzer records closely and have nothing but respect for them. What an accomplishment.

He's a freak of nature.
Supported means that you are not really the fastest you just hike with poor style and have no idea what a hike truly is.😂😂😂
this is fantastic. congrats Joe.
Thank you, Casey!
Fancy seeing you around here.
That Intro with your parents was super cool and genuine.
"Have fun sweetie" is absolutely the best part of the film.
I Need Mountains “have fun sweetie” 😂
They knew he'd be fine, this isn't the first crazy thing he's done before.

Still taking the time to film and record during the 36 hour push to the finish is crazy dedication
Joe probably logged another couple of miles with all of the times he doubled back to film himself hiking. A LOT of dedication!

24 hours is miserable unless you're racing someone XD
I’ll never understand how the human body can accomplish this. Awesome.
Cool seeing some me of my thruhiking buddies in joe’s footage. Incredible feat. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Finished the AT Sobo this past year in 4 months, made what I did look like a stroll in the park, well done awesome video
Wow, left me speechless! Out of world dedication!!
How have I not seen this? Great video. Glad to get some insight into Joe's run.

I’m way late to the part but it’s great to be here all the same. In awe at the endurance of Stringbean. Superhuman!

Amazing Joe, not enough kudos's to send your way but please accept mine...Are you able to outline the gear you used and carried?
Wow, you are a great inspiration
Just did 25 miles in three days and feel destroyed. Can’t comprehend doing 50/day for a month and a half!

Congrats on an incredible accomplishment!!

How did you charge things without long town stops?

I've got Hydrblu.

Hats off to ya, what's next. ?
Coming from a AT thruhiker he didn't just run those miles, he had to climb some alot of times.

Kind of curious as to how this record was confirmed.
that was amazing
Thanks Alexander!
