    well, the reason he killed his mother wasn't because he was adopted, and not even about lying about Thomas Wayne. it was because of the abuse he endured by her boyfriend leading to his mental disabilities, mainly his laughing disorder (Pseudobulbar Affect). As read here, "Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a condition that's characterized by episodes of sudden uncontrollable and inappropriate laughing or crying. Pseudobulbar affect typically occurs in people with certain neurological conditions or injuries, which might affect the way the brain controls emotion." this could've also caused his illusions/ schizophrenia.

      It's an indication or symptom or whatever of a psychotic break. The right hemisphere of the brain basically takes the wheel. This can cause a right-handed person to switch to being left-hand dominant and black out. The person could brutally murder someone with their left hand and have no memory of doing it. Ever.
      I very nearly did. Twice. Became left-hand dominant both times. No memory of what happened during the blackouts at all.
      I'd say that scene was both literal AND symbolic. Arthur wrote the joke's setup. Joker took over and provided the punchline. That scene is a microcosm of the movie as a whole.

    Once we realize his "girlfriend" is a hallucination it brings up the question of what else were we exposed to as an audience that was a hallucination. Clearly, feeling good about his failed stand-up routine (with imaginary girlfriend present and laughing) was based on a hallucination. Did Thomas Wayne really say, “Those of us who have made something of our lives will look at those that haven’t as nothing but clowns." on TV or did Arthur just hallucinate that? Did those guys on the subway really beat him up or did he just hallucinate that? Were the masses of people just protesting the garbage strike or were they really wearing those clown masks in support of the vigilante killer? Etc, etc. You get where I'm going with this. How can we be sure what was real and what wasn't....how far down the rabbit hole does the movie go?

    • @ishaansejpal249
      @ishaansejpal249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm a year late but the biggest wtf would be if the whole movie was a hallucination. He probably got his psychological treatment here in the last scene and the whole movie was inside his head... the lengths a man can go if he wish to. Also there's some significance of "11 o clock" on the wall behind him, some decoding TH-camrs mentioned there's a clock at the beginning of the film that says 11 and so does the last clock... maybe it was all a hallucination but the pain is real

    i do get what arthur went through, i have aspergers and i do behave outside status quo and seen cases and met other autistic people that have similar behavior as arthur, arthur hated his laughter when it was a curse of his supressed nature and now he loves it for being himself
    i do keep my values bacause i have people that do care about my condition and alot of my life i was labeled a weirdo but in time i stopped caring about their opinion
    is sad to say that maybe claudia from TDP is going the same road as arthur

    There are several hidden gems in this movie. WARNING: THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT! The scene at the beginning where Arthur is putting on his makeup, you can see two overhead lights that look like batman in the mirror. I don't think Thomas Wayne is Arthur's father but when you see the file opened by the worker behind the cage, you see the paper on the left looks different like it was recently added. Also you see Penny's handwriting from the letter's to Thomas Wayne and when Arthur is looking at an old photo he turns it over and it says I'll always love you..TW. You can notice the handwriting is different than the ones from the letters that Penny wrote which could indicate that Thomas Wayne was the father. Lastly I liked how they did a countdown throughout the movie to Arthur's descent into the Joker. In the beginning when Arthur is seeing his therapist, the clock on the wall is set to @. When the guys on the subway start harassing Arthur, you see a TEN behind them. After Arthur shoots the two men and is running after the third guy, you see the number NINE on the pillars. When Arthur goes to Sophie's apartment and kisses her, you see her apartment number is EIGHT B. When Arthur steals the files on his mother from the guy at Arkham hospital, he runs down stairwell SEVEN. When the cops are chasing Arthur onto the train, you see the number 6 on the pillar. When the cops are getting beat/murdered, Arthur holds up the number FIVE. When Arthur is talking to Murray and his stage director, you see the number FOUR in the background. When Arthur is giving his confession, you see he is being filmed on camera THREE. When Arthur grabs the camera and is cut off, you see a news channel named TWO GCN. And when Arthur stands on the police car and smears his blood on his face into a smile, you see a theatre playing a movie called, "ACE in the hole." These are just some of the things I've caught watching this film in the theatre. To say this movie was good is an understatement...it's a masterpiece.

    There are numerous theories about what else besides his relationship with Zazie Beats might be completely in Arthur's imagination. Apparently if you go back and pay attention there are several scenes where the clocks are set to the same time and/or then jump hours ahead in the same scene.
    IIRC one of the big ones is when he's dancing down the stairs - he is just dancing on one step that entire sequence and when the cops shout he comes back to reality and is shown back up the steps near where the scene began. I think the final scene with the psychiatrist is another scene that's in his head given the lack of security or guards on a known to be highly dangerous patient.
    I still think Ledger's Joker is the GOAT but this was a stellar performance by Phoenix.

    Might be overthinking this but I just noticed while watching the ending again that Arthur is singing the song in the movie. I think the director left this detail in there to make the audience infer that all more events in the movie are in Arthur's head than what you might think.

    Love how in-depth your review, more analysis was. I'm thinking the same about how this film is a social political commentary about injustice, inequality, dripping privilege from oppressors and overall, reminding us all, spectators, how violence is society. This film really resonated in France (where I'm from) for me since there was a 2-years-long demonstration movement in the streets called Yellow Vests or "Gilets Jaunes" in french. It came about as our current president (it hurt to say "our" as I condemn everything he does) raised taxes on gas since the most politically-pressurized / -victimized frenchmen and frenchwomen heavily depend on their car to go to work, far away from home. Something heavily privileged people can't relate to, the same that don't see how politics affect others, unable to think like the person different from them.

    One time I was in the hospital for being suicidal and I just needed to get away from the situation for a bit to be able to recompose myself so being in the mental hospital was a good thing but until I started taking medication the doctors kept saying that I was getting worse even though I had actually kind of evened out already.
    Once I started pretending to take the medication by putting it under my tongue tossing some water in there and swishing it back into the cup before showing that it was not in my mouth and then cupping the cup with my hand over the top to make it more difficult to look down in and see the pills.... After I started doing that the doctor suddenly said I was getting better. When I left he also gave me a prescription to continue taking and I refused it.

    I would personally say that Arthur is not a bad man he is like my father really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really bad at being a good person... I mean the guy he let go was because he was the one person who was truly nice to him. This shows why he hunted down the third guy, he thinks the would would be a better place without them in it while he thinks the world needs more people like the one he let go, even if he did give him a light hart attack by play jumping at him.
