  • Blake shows you how to easily mod a Big Muff Pi tone stack to get the missing midrange sound back. With this pedal mod, you can simply flip a switch to get that great midrange sound, then just switch it off when you want that regular big scoop sound that the Big Muff is famous for. Great pedal mod that anyone can do to take their Big Muff Pi to the next level.

    I’ve been a longtime follower of trade secrets - since long before video format. These have become less and less about quality information for luthiers with tricky problems and clever solutions, but cater toward the amateur guitarist with less actual content. I seriously miss the detailed, and high quality lutherie content of the past.

      No issues whatsoever with amateur level videos. However, the trade secrets used to be a fantastic resource in the trade. It had tips and tricks that could only be gained through a career like Dan’s. The video quality has dropped off, the production of serious lutherie videos has all but vanished, and these are now just beefed up promotions for products instead of the really great work they used to be.
      That would all be fine and well. Except that the lutherie videos have disappeared in favor of the sales pitches. There was (almost) always a sales aspect - featured tools that were used in the repair or build, but it served the purpose of the video/article rather than the article/video existing only to sell a toggle switch.
      There was a time when these were as valuable to the trade as any of the lutherie journals out there. It advanced the craft, while promoting the business.

    This is NOT the Tone Bypass circuit of some V3-4-5-6 vintage Muffs: this is a simplified mod to get around the tone control, but it's not the original circuit. It kinda works, but you get a pretty huge volume boost and it still interacts a bit with the tone control: you need a true bypass (DPDT) switch, an extra cap and an extra resistor for the original Tone Bypass circuit. You also need to cut a trace on the circuit board. I tried both versions of the mod with my NYC Muff and the original circuit works much better...

  • @lucianodebenedictis6014
    @lucianodebenedictis6014 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Orrrr... Switch a cap to make the tone stack flat or mid humped and keep the tone knob usable and the pedal not obnoxiously loud.
    Fun fact: I've done frequency response measurement on the muff with pink noise and tone at noon, and it's less scooped than you might think! That's because the rest of the pedal emphasizes mids and the tone control only partially counters that.

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's my preferred option, too! the tone control is too useful for me to want to do away with it; the only problem imo is the severe mid suckage when it's swept. like you say, changing the cap values fixes that.

    What this video lacks is a before-and-after look at the circuit diagram, showing the changes made. And, how can a single tone control be referred to as a "tone stack"? The term derives from the conventional practice of representing treble, bass, and mid controls one above the other on a circuit diagram, rather than the more normal left-to-right.

    • @jackrussellbruce7565
      @jackrussellbruce7565 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I suppose you might consider it a tone stack as the potentiometer is actually blending the sounds between a high pass filter (bass control) and a low pass filter (treble control). In essence, it's a 2-in-1 as opposed to a simple 'tone' control.

      @@TheFissionchips Yea millions of people have to be wrong, but one man's trash is another man's treasure. I guess Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, R&R Hall of Fame, etc. must be crazy to think that David Gilmour is one of the best guitar players ever. I'm glad you set me straight, lol.
