I Regret What I Said About Our Cabin Upgrade - What Was I Thinking?

- We’ve hit a massive milestone in our cozy cabin project, and I couldn’t be more excited! Today, we’re installing our brand-new, custom bronze wood windows, and trust me-you won’t believe how much they change the look and feel of the entire space. These aren’t just any windows; we’ve gone all out to bring in as much light as possible, making sure the cabin doesn’t feel dark and cramped like so many others. And the best part? These windows were specially cut by hand, with an astonishing tolerance of just 1/8 inch, thanks to the craftsmanship of our good friends at Meadowlark Log Homes.
But that’s not all-there’s a unique twist to installing windows in a log cabin. We had to account for log settling over time, which means our installation method is anything but conventional. I’ll show you the ingenious system we’ve put in place to ensure these windows stay perfectly square, even as the cabin shifts over the years.
And in true homestead fashion, we faced a big decision: should we waterproof the window openings or not? I spoke with a seasoned contractor who’s been building homes here for decades, and his surprising advice led us to save both time and money. I’ll explain why we skipped the expensive waterproofing membrane and why it’s the right call for our dry climate.
This is one of the biggest steps we’ve taken to get the cabin buttoned up, and it’s all coming together fast. From the stunning awning window above Mrs. W’s kitchen sink to the perfect casement windows designed for maximum airflow, this install marks a major turning point. Plus, with the mini-split system already in for heating and cooling, things are moving full speed ahead!
In this video, you’ll see:
The installation of our game-changing custom windows
A look at the intricate log cabin construction and how we handle settling
Why we decided to forgo waterproofing and what it means for the cabin
A sneak peek at the awning window over the kitchen and how it’s designed to handle wind and ventilation
The role our mini-split system plays in keeping the cabin comfortable all year round
There’s so much happening right now as we race to get the cabin fully enclosed before winter hits. We’ll be installing the door next and then moving on to the shingles, the handrail upstairs, and even more exciting projects. The cabin is finally starting to look like a real home, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

Good to see that your sense of humor is still intact after dealing w/comment section. You handled that Caulk like a Proho,Cody. I hope and pray that you and the family have a wonderful weekend.
I appreciate that
@@wranglerstarthe sentiment is mutual,Cody.🙏🏻
I always leave the plastic on the windows until the job is 99.999% complete. It saves from having to wash and scrape the window glass.
nice to see mr jiraiya get some camera time, seems like a cool guy
Thanks for explaining your decision about the waterproofing. My keyboard trigger finger was feeling itchy. ;) Like anything, the answer is always "It depends"
Cody you are blessed beyond reason. The views from the porch and windows are something that mpst of us could only dream of.
That along with permanent water running through your property is God sent.
Although we have some very different views since you started your channel, yes I was there at the start when your big boy was a toddler, I have seen God bless you and your family consistently and richly. You must be doing something right.
"300 days of sunshine"
My envy is immeasurable.
We could use a lot less sunshine here in Ohio. Fortunately, it looks like rain next week.
@@sociopathmercenary so no more cat barbecues for at least a week?
The cabin gets this Northern Midwest man's approval 👍🏻👍🏻
I agree with you about the window water proofing. It certainly doesn't hurt. But your call makes 100% sense. We overbuild houses to the nth degree now a days. Some common sense never hurts.
Us members are above the caulk joke…right?
let the spirit guide,
I am
Nope
One would believe but all of us know that it's still funny within us
What would the lord do ?
Honest to goodness, from one West Coast man to another, this is my favorite TH-cam channel. 👍
Thank you Sir, for just being you and for all you do, thank you.
At least there is a space here for good old fashioned humor. Lay er on thick. Act accordingly 😂
Even if the window framing does start to rot after 20+years, it seems like it would be easy enough to pull the window off and repair it.
Nice choice of windows, they look great.
Cody, showing us how to build a Missile defense system to protect us from our greatest ally. Dream video
Our greatest ally always puts America's interests ahead of their own, We are so lucky to have such a friend,
@wranglerstar
Oh brother, we are so blessed.
You made quick work of that; sure is nice having competent help.
It’s good to see the oft mentioned but rarely seen man servant.
American windows are fitted completely different to British, you guys have a lot of efficiency in your building processes
Great craftsmanship. And inspiring for the regular joe to give something a go.
Might consider that rubber tape stuff on that upper loft window, since it's a little more exposed to the weather.
That cabin is amazing
Very cool little cabin, and the chainsaw cutouts are insanely precise lol
Mrs. W needs a planter under the awning window for fresh herbs.
A log cabin with running water and .....A WORKING TOILET!?!?!?!?? You've gone soft on us Cody! Ssss OH Eff Teee tuh 😤😤😤😤😤😤
lol Looking awesome as expected and ty for always opening up things like this to us future PROhO's. May the Father continue to watch over and bless you and your house.
That view is awesome. Nice work.
Home time has a series of all the differences between log houses and a regular home sometime was a Sunday morning dying show years as go !
Nice thick caulk. Indeed it is sir, indeed it is.
The cabin is looking great
Spray water on those windows to remove the static electricity
I was hoping for the Brent Hull double hung 100 year windows, this being the internet.
I HATE how so many manufacturers add a branding sticker that you have to spend forever peeling off your brand new window. Kudos to this manufacturer for using a few brain cells and adding it to their protective cover that peels off easily in one clean swipe.
Proho doesn’t do thing because the have to proho goes the extra mile and does extra because that’s the right way. Anything you do , do it to the best of you ability
Those are beautiful windows.
Looking Great ! Hi Mt Fuji !
Beautiful view
That looks awesome great job.
Incredible views!
Are they triple glazed? Didn't you fancy having the little sash window in the bathroom obscured for when it's bath time?
You could’ve just said “ East Coast Caulk” 🗿🗿🗿
I would really be interested in a video including some more information on your helper. I work in the trades and the last few years i have noticed its become extremely difficult to find anyone who wants to work and learn how to use their hands. Id be interested to hear how you found him, how often you work together, general range of compensation, etc. Thank you for all your videos
Static ele is real! :) Nice work, my friend!
Must be said... East coast man is impressed. :)
Love your videos! Thanks
I expected you to get the windows with built in sash !
I think we all want to see Juriah a lot more on the channel.
Great video!
Don’t caulk the bottom.
2:24 That’s what she said.
of course, here we go,
😂😂 you made me do it. I didn’t even catch it until you said something. 😎
I just want to know how many gallons of boiled linseed oil it's going to take to properly coat the cabin.
About 420
Pleas stop the clik bait titel. It makes me not whant to see the video.
Ever heard of Scotty Kilmer? You would love him.
His channel, his title
@@PatrickKnieslerScotty has nothing on the Armed Scholar
@@sociopathmercenary- our comments section, our comments. Good, bad or indifferent. Get it?
Yet here you are watching the video and commenting 😂
Are the window interior frames pre-finished? That plastic film is on there to help making painting, staining, or finishing them easier.
No raw
Norm Macdonald always talked about such thick juicy caulk...😒😔
I have used the Kolbe (out of Wisconsin I think) windows in the past, but not the Glastra series that it looks like you are using. A log house can't be very tight, so your installation is probably okay. If you ever have a problem, it will most likely be localized to just one window. Building Science has come a long way in recent years and the push for an air tight house will most likely be the source of any pushback your getting on your install here in the comments. I imagine a log home would do very poorly on a blower door test.
ProHo is giving me uncle Rico vibes with the gold chain lol
Can’t you just go up in the tractor bucket instead of using scaffolding? Please advise.
All of those windows to install, and you don't have the Milwaukee electric caulk gun?
1. I only see one door. Do you have a fire escape plan if the front door is impassable?
2. Why don't you have one of those cordless caulking guns?
why dont you have a cabin with 2 doors?
was good seeing your man servant :)
11:15 - You missed your chance to ask if we'd like fries with our lunch. LOL
Love it! Will there be screens on the windows?
Yes
These cabins on 90% of channels are so tiny why make them so small
Nice work, who is going to live in the cabin?
Pore choice of words 😂😂😂😂😂

Any particular reason you didn't go with metal instead of fiberglass on the outside of the window?
I prefer it,
@@wranglerstarTo each their own.
Isn't Healthcare a private sector in the USA and thats why it's so expensive. Unlike here in Canada, but to be fair Canada's Healthcare sucks
That in fact WAS a poor choice of words😂
You don’t have a Milwaukee caulk gun
How ProHo handles thick caulk.
What volcano is that?
I always ask people with more experience/knowledge than I, "What would you do for you?". That will tell you a lot......
In the future, solar panels and batteries independent of the network.
Get german windows, thats a experience in tilting and Opnening 👍😉
That's what she said
Did I see Sweat Loaf around the neck?
❤️🙏❤️
2:32 of course we will! 🤣
2:23 - I got a laugh out of that
