I once had a prodigy as a student. In our first session he could do finger exercises that would take others at least a month to master. After a month I don't have anything else to teach him. And now he's way better than me. Something that I'm kinda proud of.
Not buying it... I´m calling bullshit at least in your time frames. Nobody develops finger dexterity in one month. Oh and you also taught "everything" you knew in one month also? Pffff...
Good thing about metal is that you can basically message your favorite musician and ask for a video lesson. I was pretty blown away by the fact I got to play with my favorite guitarist. It is cool a lot of them will add fans and just act like regular fb friends. Anyway that is my diary entry for almost nobody today.

I was a student in a school for 3 years + like 7 years of guitar before that, and one day a new guy showed up in my class, played insanely well, knew how to sweep, but didn't know the name of the individual strings

At the end of the day you're just moving your fingers with good dexterity. A lot of the people who take a decade to get good paced themselves too slowly on the material they practiced or took too many breaks. I'm not amazing, but I got better than most of the guitarists I know in a fraction of the time because I jumped right into prog and math off the bat and would practice riffs that were way over my head for months. Learning green day for 5 years will never prepare you to play Guthrie Govan riffs
@@StreetForged Ive played most of my life and I’m glad for it because I decided to start learning stuff that was way too hard around 15 or so but it made me into the player I am. I tell people all the time, pick something super hard to learn, it teaches so much more patience. I attribute my patience in other aspects of my life to practice, it was worth it.
@@ryanlyle9201 absolutely, the only way to grow is through failure. Especially in the case of guitar, a lot of bad habits can go unaddressed for years because easier pieces of music don't push you to the limit of what's possible. It took me a while to get economy of motion down and to find out that all of my guitars had really bad action. The first few songs I learned were by Tool and while they're not extremely simple, they were too slow paced to highlight the aforementioned issues in my playing, which became very apparent when I moved on to more complex riffs that required advanced chord shapes and moving all over the board quickly. It's too bad that it's so hard to find good sources of information that address all the important things to be mindful of in technique and guitar setup. I think a lot of people quit before they've given it a good shot because their guitar setup is bad and they don't have a good sense of direction or feeling of progression.
Man your videos are really entertaining and helpful. Everytime I feel sad or upset, I open youtube and your video pops up at the first. I really have fun watching it. It kills my anxiety and sadness instantly. Thank you so much sir!

He replied by asking me what I wanted him to teach me and at the time I thought he meant I was really good already. I later found out that he was a blues player and probably was asking why I came to him with my stupid metal riffs.
I subbed in as a drum teacher at a music school for a day because the actual teacher was sick last minute. Most students were beginners, so no prob. One of them was a 15 year old in a Dream Theater cover band. She was working on Dance of Eternity (had it basically down from what I could tell). I (barely an intermediate drummer) was like, WTF am I supposed to teach this girl? So we did jazz polyrhythms. She was not happy...

I wasn't quite there but it was close by the time I went for formal lessons I had figured most stuff out on my own. My guitar teacher was like omg a student with talent!! YOU I can teach. Ended up just jamming with him every Thursday.
Let me tell you my story. We had our math teacher, nothing special just normal everyday teacher who just happens to teach math . One day our school intruduces this new guy who basically was someone who could play guitar then we were told that we could take guitar classes from him. Before any students even had a chance to take classes from him,our math teacher reveals that he can play guitar. Basically our math teacher was apprantly extremely good at playing guitar, he was in a band and he also revealed that he has 2 years of guitar teaching experience😂😂😂 .So fast forward to few weeks the new dude didnt got to teach any guitar lessons but he was replaced as a teacher and all the students took classes from our math teacher myself included. And I shit you not, the new dude literally joined classes with us to learn from our math teacher because he was just that dam n good 😂😂😂. Still to this day I haven't seen anyone play guitar better than him with my own eyes
I swear I had a guitar teacher who saw my massive improvement from week to week and intentionally started trying to slow me down. He would say things like "...whoa....that's a little complex for what I asked you to do....all I wanted was a simple improv over a mild 12 bar blues. When did you learn all the inversions?" or some shit like that. Then he would see my thumb come up over the neck and tell me to keep it in the center of the neck....no. You gotta go friend. I am not altering what feels right just to satisfy your "course"
I had one of those students....blew past me in the matter of a couple of weeks. I ask how his studying went - he did what I showed him, then played an Alex Laiho solo note for note at full speed. I signed up for lessons with him.

This is such a real thing. After playing for decades, you forget how quickly new players can learn, and it’s kinda scary sometimes.
