How to use a Pako thread organiser for full coverage cross stitching

Do you ever find it hard to keep your project threads organised? I know it can be a real struggle! I'm going to show you how I use my Pako thread organiser to make sitting my full-coverage pieces so much easier.

I agree, the Pako is a game changer, and like so many other tools for our craft, I love that different people can use it in a way that suits them best. I don't put the symbols on the card, my brain finds that too hard ... I find it much easier to put the threads on my Pako's in number order with the numbers on the cards, and since Pattern Keeper tells you what floss number goes with they symbol you've chose it is super easy to find. A tip for anyone who wants to use these, but doesn't used project bags for their full coverage, the Pako organizers fit perfectly in a plastic "shoe" box -- 2 of them fit great in there. so I have a box for each of my full coverage projects and they stack nice on a shelf when not in use. Thank you for the tip on braiding the floss, I will have to try that, that does look like it would keep things looking neater. ~Katrina
Thank you Teresa for this video. I want to know a bit more about the wooden ruler that you used to measure the floss … it looks like something I need to add to my tool set for cross stitching.
Because I stitch/search by symbol, I take the extra step to organize the symbols into groups (ie. letters all together, numbers, shapes, etc). So when I need a symbol, I know which "section" to look immediately to rather than going down the rows looking for it.
I love the Pako thread organizers, but I use an easier method. On the stitch legend, I number the floss 1 thru (however many threads there are.) Then I number the boxes on the cardboard the same way. When stitching, I look at the symbol, find it on the legend and see what number I gave it. I then find that # on the Pako. Much easier and less time consuming than cutting and gluing the symbols. I also don't have to waste time finding the symbols on the Pako. The numbers are in order, so very easy to find. Hope this is helpful.
That is a great idea, I am just considering getting a Pako which is why I am watching, but the gluing the symbols on looks too time consuming, and I was worried as the boxes don't look like they are big enough for the full numbers. Plus your way you don't use up the cardboard inserts, you can just leave it in for every project. I just wish mark up rxp had a way to add this to their key that pops up when you click a symbol.
Thank you for sharing this. I do not do full coverage but just love watching any video that has decent organization tips. Like you I work from symbols so I make up thread cards. In the “olden days” (45 years ago when I first started cross stitch) I used to draw a box on the card and then draw the symbol. Then a few years ago I saw you color copy the symbols, cut them out and stick them down. Oh my goodness - so much better. Thanks Teresa.
I learned how to do HAEDs from you. I have tried many different organizations that you showed in the beginners series except the floss drops that snap into the holder. I recently got 2 Pakos and it's my favorite!

I am using a folder system called flossology. I started using it on my duck and I love it. All threads are in sleeves, 14 colours to a page stored in a ring binder. You can pull a single thread out with any trouble and the rest of the thread is kept safe and clean in it’s sleeve. When I have finished stitching for the day it is just a case of closing the folder and putting in my project bag. Too single. I purchased the system off of Etsy from an Australian vendor. As you would say, Love,Love ,Love.
You have to love what works for you! I know Karen the needle bugg uses/used the flossology system and she really liked it too.
Hi, Teresa. Thank you for showing how you figure out how much floss you need to order after checking your stash. I'll use that method the next time I go to order floss and see if I can save some money.

I have 6 pako organisers and 4 chinese knock-off organisers and have created a master set for every DMC thread number. I store two organisers in a 12x12inch tray and list number range on the front. Each tray sits on a 5 shelf unit in my kallax cube bookcase (its a bit hard to explain. I wish I could show a photo). I no longer need to kit up projects as I use this master set for every project. When I run out of thread I top up from my stash. I will have to try your braiding technique as it does get a bit messy 😊.
l love using Pako's for regular charts, not for MC's because 5 would take to much space. But in stead of printing the symbol list I copy it to a spreadsheet with both symbols and numbers in a grid that fits exactly on the cardboard Pako inserts. I print those out and slide them in the Pako's.

I so agree, I have only just discovered what an amazing tool it is, I have not used it with a full coverage project yet, but my Bella Filipina pattern is full of confetti and I found it so much easier to work on once I setup my pako. I want now for every wip
thank you for sharing this. i learned a while back about how you label your Pako, game changer for me thank you. i actually use separate needles for each colour but only put the needle next to the colour when i’ve used the colour. saves me a lot of time with needle threading. I’m a cross country stitcher and don’t park. i’ve tried but i get them all tangled LOL 🤯🙄. thanks so much. great video.
I agree it is a game changer. I use both the Pako organizer and the Pako needle orgarnizer.
Awesome tutorial Teresa...right now, my 1st FC, im using cardboard thread organizer, like these but only holds like 30. I agree it works great to be abke to grab a card and just pull a strand of floss. You really helped me with the figuring out hiw much floss i need and if i need to buy more....this will be a very big help. Since i dont have project bags right now, i put my cards in a clear plastic shoe box and just flip to the card i need....i think i have 5 cards. Would be so much easier if i had the pakos and only had 2 to look through. Anyways....a very Big Help on figuring out if i need to buy floss or can use from stash. 😊 Thank you so much 💕

Just got my two in the mail and I'm starting to get set up to do my first full coverage HAED. 😊 So glad you have all of these videos of you trying different things. I had to break to my mom that I'm refusing to ever use bobbins. She does embroidery and has always had a bobbin box, since i was a kid.
We have to use the tools that work for us right! When I first started stitching I used bobbin boxes too. I guess it is what you like and what works for you. I found working on full-coverage bobbins for me was definitely not the way lol

some tips: 1) if you have a printer you can fill cards in program and print it out, 2) you can group similar symbols toghether: squares in one row, circles in other, this way you will find simbols faster, it's very helpfull especially when the color count reaches 200.

I have been using the Pako thread organizers for several years. I love them! I also use them on medium sized projects, in addition to my full coverage projects, so I guess I am one of those few people that go through more than 10 cards, lol.
My daughter created a symbol card file on her computer, similar to the symbol cards that come with the Pako organizer, so I just print out additional symbol cards on some heavy weight card stock when I need them. Works great, and I don’t have to keep buying symbol cards!

I learned parking method thru you and bought my first pako long ago (bc of u, oc.) Has anyone mentioned glue dots? I just happened to have some minis and they worked great for the symbols-on-pako exercise. Thanks for all u do, pretty lady!
I use the Tombow adhesive tape runner for my glue, it saves time and is less mess.

Interesting! I never used this product, willing to try as working with bobbins isn’t so easy either. Can you store leftover bits of thread on the organizer too? How do you store the threads left when a project is finished?

Print on sticker paper. No glue necessary. Just a 2 cent opinion.

Can I ask what the gadget is you use (at 13:25 minutes) to measure and cut your floss to lengths? It makes this job really fast and seems a handy tool, but maybe was made especially for you by a woodworker? Thanks! Anita

Have you tried putting a bit of glue into a few squares and then just picking up the pieces with the symbols and placing them on top? I find this much faster.

I love this storage idea but I’m afraid it would take to long looking for the Corban symbol as I usually store my tread by color number. Do you think there is room to write the number instead of symbol

Hi Hilde, I don't think you can print directly from pattern keeper. If you downloaded a PDF chart to put into Pattern Keeper you must have a PDF chart format and just print directly from that.

I use a floss winder from ThreadtheNeedleSt on Etsy. They have different length ones so you can choose the one that suits your stitching. Xx
