    Great vid! Good job. 👍🏼 these are great jigs for people without a flat platen on their 2x72.. but most of those grinders and the angle adjustment on their platen.. just adjust that to whatever degree you want and use your tool rest.. superrrr easy and doesn’t cost anything or require any building!! I’ve been using it for some time now and it works great. I just use a standard piece of angle iron with no mods lol

    Thanks WBK. I've been gathering from other sources that newbies should avoid a jig so that the learn how to free-hand first, then they can go to a jig (or not) once they are freehand proficient in order to speed up the process, but now I see the other perspective that your describe so well towards the end of the video, which is basically the reverse. I guess the hope is that the knife-maker doesn't become too dependent on the jig so that they can move ahead on their free-hand skills.

    • @WhiteBoneKnives
      @WhiteBoneKnives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I do believe it really helped me! I can still do better lines with the jigs rather than free handing but after trying free handing I realize the importance of it! You can do so much more with free handing because jigs cant twist or move freely and you will soon discover it for your self once you try it. The jig does give you a good base knowledge to work from though and once you master your grinds on the jig, that is when its time to move on to free handing. It takes quite a few blanks to master but you will get it eventually. I still haven't mastered it yet but I'm on my way. Cant give up! :D

    Starting a tap and keeping it 90° can be done on the drill press. Just don't turn it on. Turn the bit by hand until threads are established. Then switch over to the tap wrench.

    • @bbowling4979
      @bbowling4979 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      vipero00 I second this. You've gone to a lot of trouble setting up the drill press correctly. You might as well use that to your advantage.

      Or just tighten the tap in the chuck by hand then turn the machine on, then off, then send the tap down into the hole as the machine loses rpms. Works every time.

  • @kennethpierce2518
    @kennethpierce2518 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you will clamp the part to be drilled onto the drill press table, drill the hole, do not unclamp the part, replace the drill bit with the desired tap in the Chuck. Hand feed the tap down until it makes solid contact. Hold pressure on the drill press handle with one hand and turn the Chuck with your other hand (not under power) The tap will be at 90 degrees to the hole you just drilled. Much easier than trying to start a plug tap with a tap wrench.
    Also to make tapping easier, use a starting tap or a gun tap will work.

    Does the potential for the jig to rock back and forth on the nut make a difference? Or, to put it another way, is it worth putting in 2 bolts and finding a way to make them turn at the same time to make it more stable?

    • @WhiteBoneKnives
      @WhiteBoneKnives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Addison de Lisle I actually still use the jig today. Never have a problem with stability if used correctly and you can really hog off material with this jig. So long as your tool rest is flat and have a good clamp, you cant go wrong. I only like having 1 bolt because it allows you more room on your tool rest and it also saves a ton of time only adjusting one rather than 2.

      I probably wont do a review on my grinder because there are many out there already. I have the kmg variable speed package from Beaumont metalworks. Really I have only great things to say about it though!

    When you had it in the drill press, all you had todo was to put the tap in the drill chuck and turn it by hand. No trouble starting or worring

  • @PabloP169
    @PabloP169 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the knife used in this video, the knife top edge is what is resting on the platen, not the carefully smothed down piece of angle iron, all that smoothing was to now avail. If it wasn't a flat top on the knife it would be all over the place. Likely need to clamp the knife blank up away from the edge of the angle iron, such that the angle iron is what is sitting/running on the platen, not the top of the knife.

    Cool jig, but wouldn't it be more stable if you put two bolts in there? So you'd have two contact points. Just a little thought.

    • @WhiteBoneKnives
      @WhiteBoneKnives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Janster Nv. it depends on the knife. there is no "best degree" make a more shallow bevel for a beefy workhorse or a long bevel for better slicing

  • @buddyhutchins3782
    @buddyhutchins3782 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why all the sanding of the bottom of the jig then installing the adjustment bolt which will hold the very nicely sanded bottom away from the table surface....also no need for an exact 90 degree angle.....but it is a neat enough bevel grinding jig.

    I notice the grinder has an adjustable platen angle. Would it be safe to change the angle of the platen and keep the angle iron jig flat without the screw?

    • @WhiteBoneKnives
      @WhiteBoneKnives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      stolguy you could certainly do this although it takes much more set up time to adjust your platen with constant belt tension and 2 bolts than it does with a quick set jig! Thanks for watching!!

    • @stolguy
      @stolguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man....I asked cuz I JUST finished building a 2x72 grinder a couple of days ago. I wasn't sure if there was a safety reason not to angle the platen so thanks for that info.
      I went out today and tried a flat angle angle iron and while there are two bolts on the platen arm the belt tension stays the same cuz the distances do not change, the belt tension is unaffected.
      Of course without the adjusting screw the bevel jig is simpler to make and a distinct advantage is the bevel jig is quite stable as it stays and lays flat against the table. The most fiddly part is setting up the platen arm angle. I think I'll make a couple of wooden blocks at the preferred angles I would use most often, now that I'm up and running.
      I may yet build the angle iron jig with the set screw mechanism, so many knife makers on you tube seem to bevel that way, what the heck ?! I built the 2x72 grinder following in their foot steps already.
      Anyway, thank you for the vids and the inspiration.

      how much did it cost you to build it?

    • @stolguy
      @stolguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      toppertruthio I bought the square tube steel and the bearings, somewhere between $100 -$200. The variable speed motor was free from a treadmill, 2.8 hp continuous duty. The aluminum wheels I turned from some old round stock and I had some plate metal. Full speed it's around 7000 surface feet per minute, much too fast for my pay scale. Fair bit of welding and grinding and fiddling to get it tracking.
      I think if I had to pay for everything without the motor under $300. I ended up selling my 12 inch disk sander and oscillating spindle sander for $200 so it kinds worked out.

    You should have started the tap by chucking it into the drill press to make sure it's 90 degrees pretty basic practice

  • @jerrybobteasdale

    Rather than the set screw, I think you'd want a set of shims to set the angle. More easily repeatable angle. Less fiddling.

    Im a newb knife maker. I have a question- What is the difference between this method and clamping a blade to some square tube or a 2x4 and just tilting the tool rest whatever degree you want your bevel?

    • @WhiteBoneKnives

      I suppose it would essentially be the same just a different method. I would use a metal material though just so it wont warp on you in the future.

      A lot of the grinders aren't adjustable to that downward angle. I have two and they just go to square, though the KMG I have as in the video has the platen tip forward.
      With round wheels the hazad zone is getting so that the work piece can get grabbed because it is just above the horizon (which is relative you your elbow), then it can get grabbed and thrown. It isn't dangerous to be on the downside, but you want to be well above so that you can see what you are doing, and yet not be in the kick zone.

    • @aguynamedmike77
      @aguynamedmike77 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah I see, I keep forgetting not everyone has built their grinder. I made mine from scratch so I kind of fabricated it to fit my needs. Thanks for the reply, beautiful work, and thanks again for taking the time to contribute and help others. I am among many who appreciate it.

      Bryan Kirk u sound a bit high and mighty if you don't mind me saying. This was also over 3 years ago. I've since made over a thousand knives. If you want to check out my Instagram you can be sure I'm not just "almost making a knife" you see I'm not interested in becoming perfect. It's impossible. I'm merely trying to make a video to help people and I get bozos like you posting negativity everywhere trying to flex their internet muscle. It's people like you that make me question if parents no longer teach their kids manners these days and judging from your pic you're a good bit older than me. Which brings me back to why did this old man even watch an educational video to begin with if he already knows these things? Oh that's right maybe he didn't and he just wanted an excuse to get online and show his blatant insecurities about all the things going wrong in his life. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. I guess mom didn't teach you that so I will. Guess you learned one more thing from my channel today!😊
