This is one of those few instances where the tour replacement is better than the original song. I always hated Donkey Pot Pie -- it's catchy, sure, but the lyrics are so stupid they make my head hurt. Nearly every single rhyme was forced and unnatural, and while what it lacked in emotion it could have made up for with humor, the whole thing was just painfully unfunny. Plus, having a whole chorus play a single character was just confusing. Forever, on the other hand, is a gorgeous and powerful belter with lyrics that are emotionally complex and not just nonsense. Dragon is one of my dream roles because of it.
I agree. When we played Shrek in High School we had a girl who played the dragon and she sang forever so beautifully, it was amazing! I started loving this song even more because of her! And I hate Donkey Pot Pie, too! It's the only song of the Broadway version that I don't like!

Donkey Pot Pie and the dragon sequence were the weakest parts of the Broadway production, and the producers knew it because they kept changing it around. I watched the DVD Broadway version first and for the first time with a Broadway musical I thought 'wtf is this?'. They were right to scrap it and change it to this. One person singing, one scaled dragon puppet that moves and has a character bop to the music and much more depth in the lyrics, which makes her a better character. When I saw this here in the UK, this sequence went from the worst to one of the best.

Donkey Pot Pie and the dragon sequence were the weakest parts of the Broadway production, and the producers knew it because they kept changing it around. I watched the DVD Broadway version first and for the first time with a Broadway musical I thought 'wtf is this?'. They were right to scrap it and change it to this. One person singing, one scaled dragon puppet that moves and has a character bop to the music and much more depth in the lyrics, which makes her a better character. When I saw this here in the UK, this sequence went from the worst to one of the best.

Its a good song, but i so prefer donkey pot pie tbh. Yes this is a nice song, but donkey pot pie has so many levels and depth to it. Donkey Pot Pie was a better song for donkey as well, I hate the bit he sings in this ngl..

White CD Basically they didn’t write this song until after the soundtrack was recorded. When the show closed on Broadway they removed Donkey Pot Pie and wrote Forever, which has been in every production since. Although this recording Forever was later released as a bonus track on the original cast recording
