The Statue of Liberty, located on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor, is a symbol of freedom and democracy. Its story is a fascinating blend of science, art, and history.
    Design and Construction:
French Connection: The idea for the statue was conceived by French politician and abolitionist Édouard René de Laboulaye as a gift to the United States to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and to celebrate the friendship between France and the U.S.
Design by Bartholdi: French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design the statue. He envisioned a colossal statue of a woman representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, holding a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) with the date of the Declaration of Independence.
Structural Engineer: Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who later designed the Eiffel Tower, was responsible for the structural elements of the statue. The internal framework was designed to support the outer copper skin.
    Construction Materials:
Copper Sheets: The statue's outer layer is made of copper sheets, which were provided by the metallurgical firm Gaget, Gauthier & Co.
Iron Framework: Eiffel utilized iron framework to support the copper sheets. The statue's internal structure is a skeletal framework of iron trusses.
