Irony is that it was written by a kid at the beginning of his life (Jackson Browne was 16 when he wrote it) and now Glen has recorded perhaps the best songs he's ever sung toward the end of his. Glen Campbell has completely changed the meaning of one of my favorite songs nearly 40 years. It is a truly remarkable song and this is a truly remarkable performance and video.
I grew up in inner city Philly. We all listened to Motown, RnB. Soul music but Glen Campbell still broke through into our homes and my heart. This video and song is a fitting tribute and farewell to a legend.à
Cannot listen to this without crying! Especially poignant with Glen's illness and doubly so because my Mum who has always loved him has the same illness. I'm 49 and cannot remember a time when I didn't know who Glen Campbell was. Fond, fond memories.
I've been listening to this everyday for the past week or so. Pretty much sums up where I'm at in life right now. I've heard pretty much every version, and honestly, I believe Glen's is the best. I know that will piss off some Jackson Browne fans, but Glen's phrasing is really impeccable here. Can't imagine someone doing it better, frankly. Was very sorry to hear that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I hope his farewell tour goes great. The guy deserves everyone's respect. Thanks Glen.
What a wonderful bunch of comments you guys.I can only echo them all.Such a fan of his I am.Deeply saddened to hear of his diagnosis.Hope he prolongs the inevitable for a long long time.I can't hold back the tears listening to his version of this song and how it hits home. Love you man!
I just listened to Brown's version and in noway does it compare to the richness of Glen's. Listen to all the different chords in there and the constant movement of these chord and the chord progression. Glen always made it sound so smooth and it was second nature to him. He is missed. Yet he lives on through all of his music. Glen Travis Campbell is never forgotten. The "Guitar Man" with the beautifully perfect voice.
how dare people bring this man down!!!.listen to that voice...you know when we saying things will be ok, for his family, they are the people that will bee there.God bless glen and family.
Check out everything you can. He is amazing. I suggest checking out his concert with the South Dakota Symphony - it is mind numbingly good. There is a DVD and a bunch of videos on youtube.
Glen is naturally and simply the best,,if you are a musician and you listen to a bunch of Glen Campbell songs then sit down to write a song I'm sure something good will come out in your own writing,,try it and you'll see !! R.I.P. Mr. Glen Campbell and thanks for everything you gave to millions of people who were lucky enough to hear and see you play and perform,,very special.
I have "By the time I get to Phoenix"and Wichita Lineman on 45's.69cents at Birnbaums on 86st.Thats how much I like Glen Campbell.Plus, 4 people that should looking in the mirror and say "what was I thinking?"
My son introduced me to this song and it just blows me away. Iv'e also heard the Jackson Browne original, but as I am of a certain age, this Glen Campbell version just seems to pull at the heartstrings.
Such an amazing version. I hope Jackson Browne is proud. It's an incredible swansong for Glen - he has been a great performer - but his version really moved me.
Very melancholic like Johhny Cash went as he got older, its sad but produces some beautiful music. Great stuff Glen, it brings a tear to my eye but I love it.
Glenn was a giant talent, as this incredible performance reminds us. I still find it hard to believe that a 16 year old could create a song which resonates to thoroughly with older folks like myself. Miraculous.
Not bad at all! Always been a fan of Glen's classic 60's & 70's hits. Grew up hearing his songs. These new recordings ain't bad. Goes to show you're never too old to rock and roll!
It's just that I've been healing - so long. Please don't confront me with my failures, I've not forgotten them. - I don't know what was tweaked in this song in terms of lyrics but it just seems like this was written for him along with the video of pictures of his life. This is just perfect.
So sorry to hear of your diagnosis Mr. Campbell. Thank you for all the years of wonderful music. Wichita Lineman is one of my favorite songs, and you've done a good job on this Jackson Browne cover.
I like both versions, Jackson Browne's and Glenn Campbell's. I find this version doesn't make me feel sad the way Jackson Browne's does. I woke up this morning with this song playing in my mind. It's hard to believe Jackson Browne wrote this song when he was only 16. He was old beyond his years. Great artists both of them--thank goodness for TH-cam.
Wonderful photo montage. I remember his TV show - and John Hartford, his 'invisible man' behind him on banjo. While this kind of music has fallen out of favor at times, there will always be something warm and personal about it when performed by artists like Glenn Campbell and the late John Denver. Ah i miss John Denver and John Hartford. I also have great sympathy for Glenn Campbell's struggle ahead - my Nana had alzheimer's and it's a terrible thing to go through for everyone.
I'm a Jackson Brown fan,,My parents were Country,,So I am familiar with his music. He makes this song his own..I still like JB's version,,Campbell was Great... Amazing,,So sad he is ill ...Sorry for him and his family.. " These days I sit on cornerstones and count the time in quarter times to 10,,Don't confront me with my failures, I have not forgotten them",...
I totally agree Mr. ramblingambler777! I love it too!My husband has had AD (for 8+years now) & I too was so sorry to hear one of my all time favorites The Great Glen Campbell had it also, as it is a HELL I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy & I pray for his wife & children. I loved GC when I was young & recently have fallen in love with him & his old & new songs all over again. I know what he's facing, I know what he & his family are going through so his songs really touch my heart! God Bless You!
Masterful cover by a true great! Just saw Glen and his family in concert, and heard him perform this - beautiful! What a legend! Waiting for his next album, and happy to have seen him perform with his talented family. Go Glen!
@ramblingambler777Re: comment of 7 months ago. Your words about Glen Campbell really touch my heart. I'm certain that Jackson Browne is flattered that Campbell chose to record this song. I've been a long time fan of Jackson Browne but have listened to Glen Campbell even longer. I remember his t.v. show and as a kid waited each week to watch it. I wanted my first guitar to be Ovation because that's what Glen played. He is a true musician who has profoundly influenced many guitar players like me.
This is one of the most original versions of this song. Greg Almond did this on a solo album, and of course Jackson Brown. Great version. I heard Glen Campbell is going through the early stages of Alzheimers. Great Talent.
One of the saddest and most moving songs of the last decade, easily. The Nico version also has a way of tearing out your heart, so check for that if you haven't heard it.
Wow. The first time I heard this I didn't recognise it! He's changed it alot... I can't believe Jackson Browne wrote this when he was 16! He's such a poet, all his lyrics are so heart felt and poignant. I think Campbell has made a good cover but I do prefer the original.
As a child, I would hold the side of the tv, dancing up and down in my diapers, then sitting in front and being transfixed by the Glen Campell tv show. Someone compared him to McCartney. I'd say that's a great analogy - An American McCartney. I love you, Glen.
@06hatter Hadn't heard this version till now. The song's been around a lot longer than the last decade. It's on one of Browne's earliest albums from the early 70s. Great piece of work. I never thought about Glen when I heard it. It does fit though. Cameron Crowe of Rolling Stone once said this was Ronnie Van Zant's favorite song.
I agree ramblingambler777 and I'm a ABB fan and liked Gregg's version than his old roomate Jackson Browne but this one is the best..Saw Glen live before he got real famous and then in the early 90's in Branson..One of a kind..
Jackson Browne was a boy when he wrote this. The comparison of the feeling and sentiment in his song was really a song waiting for an older man with that long life of experience, knocks and falls and failures. Glen could be said to that man in this song.
@module90 I like Glen's version, being a fan of his for a long time. I have never heard Jackson Browne's version or if I have, I don't remember it. I do like Nico's 1967 version from her Chelsea Girl album. I think Jackson Browne originally wrote the song for Nico.
am preferring Glen's version over Jackson Browne... Glenn the angel michael of music .. like paul maccartney he is a super gifted musician who cannot read music .... they just have the music in them ~
Irony is that it was written by a kid at the beginning of his life (Jackson Browne was 16 when he wrote it) and now Glen has recorded perhaps the best songs he's ever sung toward the end of his. His version of John Lennon's last song Grow Old With Me from this album is definitive, period. Thanx, Glen.
i love this song i went to se glen last year at the sage in gateshead one of the best concerts i have been too fantastic
beautiful rip.
I grew up in inner city Philly. We all listened to Motown, RnB. Soul music but Glen Campbell still broke through into our homes and my heart. This video and song is a fitting tribute and farewell to a legend.à

I do not have words to describe how amazing this is. Absolutely wonderful.

Line says it all to me: Please don't confront me with my failures
I've not forgotten them...
The best version of a great song ..written by Jackson Browne.. Thanks To the both of them
Just a great song and cover for sure.

Music personified...no--one like him!😢
how dare people bring this man down!!!.listen to that voice...you know when we saying things will be ok, for his family, they are the people that will bee there.God bless glen and family.

Glen Campbell; I have been a fan of yours since 1967 , and you just keep getting better ! You are the greatest .
"True American Songman of Legend" Here-And a GREAT Musician...
I have "By the time I get to Phoenix"and Wichita Lineman on 45's.69cents at Birnbaums on 86st.Thats how much I like Glen Campbell.Plus, 4 people that should looking in the mirror and say "what was I thinking?"
This album made me seek out Glen Campbell's original music. He is awesome.
Please don't confront me with my failures, I've not forgotten them.......that hit me hard
There for the grace of God go we all.
My son introduced me to this song and it just blows me away.
Iv'e also heard the Jackson Browne original, but as I am of a certain age, this Glen Campbell version just seems to pull at the heartstrings.

Joseph Zipkin Allman Bro's also did this song! Very well I must say!
Very melancholic like Johhny Cash went as he got older, its sad but produces some beautiful music.
Great stuff Glen, it brings a tear to my eye but I love it.
It's a kinda sad song that makes you think of days gone by..the 'what if's' in your life.
Very nice, reminds me of a girl I knew...
Glenn was a giant talent, as this incredible performance reminds us.
I still find it hard to believe that a 16 year old could create a song which

Been a big fan for 45 years. Great song and video.

He puts himself onto every song so beautifully. Deeply touching.

Brenda O'Grady Gregg Allman does this song as well! All 3 versions are great!
He does an excellent job giving this song a classic Glen Campbell touch with the strings and gently rolling guitar. I like it a lot.
Excellent song, arrangement and performance.
Very, very moving cover of this song. It is a testament to recognizing past failings and the ability to live in the present.
Flawless. 8)

this is making me cry
What fine end. Loved this song since Jackson's Everyman album. But only by Jackson, and Glen. And Glen, thank you for signing off this way.
The voice of the REAL singer!
I totally agree Mr. ramblingambler777! A legendary singer.......still great.... does this song to perfection.
Masterful cover by a true great! Just saw Glen and his family in concert, and heard him perform this - beautiful! What a legend! Waiting for his next album, and happy to have seen him perform with his talented family. Go Glen!
Coming from a guy who's 51...Glen covers it all here...
His voice still sounds as great as it did at the beginning of his incredible career.
Love Glen's soulful voice.
Absolutely excellent. Glen is a treasure and his new album "Ghost on the Canvas" is friggin' magnificent!!!!
What 16 yr old writes a song like this? Amazing
Thank you Glen. RIP
Jackson was just SIXTEEN when he wrote this song ! Incredible ! Sounds like something you would write after reflecting on a very long life .
poetry in motion thanks Glenn
We love you Glen. We are praying for you.
We will never forget you.
Simply Beautiful.
Thanks glen for making me think about the 1s I love so much X

Love you brother. Thank you Glenn, thank you for all the great music that has enriched all our lives.
this whole album captures my general mood "these days"....love it.
I loved this...so honest it captured my mind.
A very very good version - i have always had a special place in my heart for GC, you hang in there.
Came here because this was a Discover Weekly cut on that other service. Lovely, and bittersweet
Bought the Meet Glen Campbell album. Great piece work.
I'm just blown away by how GC sings this song - someone mentioned that it tugged at her heart and that's it exactly
Such a Beautifull Song.... :)
Beautiful song Great artist
I'm a huge Jackson Browne fan and the original artist version is usually the best...but Glen took this song and made it his own. Bravo Mr. Campbell.
Glen's a legend and i sure hope he plays the sunday night at glastonbury one of these years!
Great footage and Glen covers this one beautifully. Great Glen postings man!
thanks and god bless GC awesome song that he has made his own , very haunting
I love this version! I grew up on the Nico take on it and have loved the song forvever so it's nice to hear other renditions. Thanks for posting.
fantastic song and rendition
This is one of the most original versions of this song. Greg Almond did this on a solo album, and of course Jackson Brown. Great version.

Brilliant !!
Thanks Glenn.

Excellent version of this song. Greg Allman's version from the 1973 Album 'Laid Back' is also brilliant.
This record is unbelievable.
If you do not own it, you should.
Hi Gleen , just saw your today in NightLight ABC , love all yours song and U R great guitar player . Love Yo Mike
fav song ever. always makes me feel better
Wow. The first time I heard this I didn't recognise it!

He found true love with Kim . RIP GLEN, NEVER FORGOTTEN.. 🎵💞🎶🌸〰♥

@thompsonlake great post! I couldn't agree more!
I can Relate to Glen. i think about the things i forgot to do....
I hear that, love this version.
Sadly, so do I and it's painful knowing the chance is gone forever.
Excellent..RWB
am preferring Glen's version over Jackson Browne... Glenn the angel michael of music .. like paul maccartney he is a super gifted musician who cannot read music .... they just have the music in them ~
Glen could read music. He was self taught.
