Once again, NewJeans blew me away! The 'New Genes' are really revolutionizing the genre and the production and the whole "Side A/B" concept is truly special.
I also think that maybe I took it a bit too far with my analogy in comparing idols to a cupid of sorts at 18:54 but I just couldn't shake that feeling, feel free to let me know all your thoughts below!

I thought the connection you made to parasocial relationships was insightful.
I had to watch both videos twice before coming up with the same theory as you. It makes sense that the cupid got into a forbidden love and was removed from that attachment by a higher up. But I really like your analysis of the parasocial relationships.

My take on this:
It's the story of Voluptas, the Roman goddess of pleasure and delight, the daughter of Amor and Psyche. Giving short moments of sensual enjoyment to the people around her, she's invisible to the human eye - and only the graces, always by her side, are witnesses to her works. Falling in forbidden love with a human, like her father before, she decides to shed her divinity for the man of her dreams. Only to let her father show her, that in the end, everything she'll ever give and get is another fleeting moment of bliss.

It's just a theory... but more plausible to me without some gender-changing shenanigans in storytelling. ^^
We just spun the theory a little further on another reactor's channel:
First, we see François-Édouard Picot's painting "L'Amour et Psyché" hanging in the Louvre - the (Roman) mythological backstory has already happened! Continuity!
We see Hoyeon's invisible character, awakening desire and lust in the people around her - it's not love, and it's not sustainable (seeing the man from the elevator breaking up with the girl shortly after). So she is a higher being with powers - a god, a demon, a ghost? We already established Roman mythology, so let's go with goddess... Just a jump to the end, Tony Leung's character is clearly a fatherly figure from the same plane of existence: invisible too, with powers, acquainted with Hoyeon's character, an age difference fitting for a presumed father-daughter relationship. So if he really is the father - going back to the story of the painting, he should be Amor, who in the end married his forbidden love Psyche after she was made immortal. Their daughter became the goddess of pleasure and delight, and it's just the things Hoyeon inspires in the people around her. Let's recap the scene at the museum, where she stands side by side with the object of HER desire - I got the feeling of "My parents did, so why can't I?"
Standing naked (leaving everything behind) in the rain? That's an image so often associated with rebirth and new beginnings in art, movies, and comics - think about the tears in rain scene in "Blade Runner", Frank Millers "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" rebirth, Scar's end in "The Lion King", or Noah in The Bible...
And finally, NewJeans as the Graces (Joy, Happiness, Bright/Light, Leader, Bloom/Growth, etc.), the entourage of Venus, often accompanying Voluptas as well? It is just fitting... ^^

I saw this theory online:
"Hoyeon (actress from Squid Game) here is like Eros.
Eros also appears in the painting.
Eros has the ability to fall in love if he sends a look. This is why Hoyeon continues to make eye contact with the male protagonist in the video. To add, I feel like NJ were like fairies, little workers who got the word out to the Aphrodite about Eros's doings. And the closing scene with Hoyeon walking just to see NJ happily dancing made me feel like she was realizing it, like, "yes, it was you, wasn't it?"
Also the same guy directed and produced "Ditto" thats's why it looks familiar.

Tony Leung（the white hair guy) is a very famous Hongkong actor I was so shocked when I saw him in this MV 😂
Leung is famous in Wong Kar-Wai movies like Happy Together, which is a great gay movie very early in 1997 and Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love❤
Something interesting I realized that I didn't the first time around was that the guy (presumably Psyche) already knew her in a way. That is, he dreamed of her. During the museum scene of side A, Danielle sings, "Dreaming of each other..." while they are in front of the symbolic painting. This is further supported by when he sees her human form after she sheds her divinity, as we briefly see he was already painting her. If you think about it, it's not surprising that her attachment to this mortal manifested through his dreams. I think it makes the story that much more tragic.

This MV based on the Greek mythical story of Eros and Psyche, Hoyeon's role with a good performance representing Eros and a male actor representing Psyche. Eros, who was hard at falling in love with others, falls in love with Psyche, but there is a scene in which Liung, the role of Aphrodite who hated Psyche in the myth, interferes. And it's my interpretation and opinion on this MV

The director is Wooseok Shin, who made Ditto and OMG music videos as well! You can tell just from the amazing work he does for these girls. Before the OMG era he was going to stop working with kpop, while NewJeans was going to be his last work for kpop but he came back and worked with NewJeans again, and I'm kinda glad he came back because I love his films and creativity behind these music videos. He such an amazing director
Hoyeon is Eros or Cupid. She fells into a guy (Micol), so she becomes a human herself. But, someone higher (Tony) resets it at the end. This is the story of MV. This is also the underlying story of that painting in the museum.
If we pay attention to why "get up" sounds at the beginning of the right side of the earphone, it is because it is telling you to follow the song, basically its like looking for where the music is coming from, and that is reflected when the actress in the credits walks to the end of the hallway but when the music of new jeans sounds on the right side of the earphone, the actress also hears that and decides to follow the music, in the scene it is clearly seen that she turns to the right following the song, and when she meets the source of the sound, that is new jeans, that is when we hear the song completely from both earphones.... yeah, it's awesome how they play with all our senses in the new jeans MVs hahaha 🤭

As a result, Cupid hides his identity from Psyche and visits her only at night, ensuring that she never sees his face.
In my interpretation of this MV, I feel like Hoyeon interprets Cupid/Eros and the male actor interprets Psyche, while Liung is Venus/Aphrodite. Being always surrounded by love, Cupid is almost indiferent to it already and never falls in love. But then Psyche (the male actor) shows up and everything changes. Cupid gets the chance to live that love but while doing that, Cupid forgets about his/her "mission", which is easily "fixed" by Venus.
Makes sense why I literally can't get over this MV, Denis Villeneuve is my favorite film maker of the last decade by a wide margin. NewJeans is an amazing group that pushes the boundaries on whats possible artistically in kpop and it's insane they're taking such risks whilst they're in their debut year and at the top, they have so much to lose but still willing to take these risks.

I think it's actually The Grandmaster movie, that's where I remember him from. Now that you mention it yes, I do remember him from the trailers for Shang Chi too but I haven't watched the movie yet so it took me a second to remember.

i wasn’t a fan of newjeans when they debuted, i like attention but hype boy and the whole mini wasn’t really my taste, and then they came back with ditto and omg and i was absolutely shocked, this laid back type of music with great synths and soothing vocals is one of my favorite types of songs. super shy was great but this song is just phenomenal to me, nothing outstanding about rap versus or vocals, but it’s done so moderately and decently that i’m absolutely in love, it’s haunting and mesmerizing. The mvs are GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL and they are honestly impressing me every single time more and more. It truly is like a work of art

He is the villain in Shang Chi and the main character in almost every film directed by Wong Kar Wai like In The Mood For Love (2001) And Chungking Express (1996), classic films that basically built the identity of Asian culture including in kpop (since it all started in with movies).
Sorry but all this is just to say that he is the greatest chinese actor alive, a complete legend, and that's why he looks so familiar.

The story of this mv is based on the movie City of Angels.
This film tells the story of an angel who falls in love with a woman and decides to become human to be with her.
But shortly afterwards the woman he fell in love with dies.
In short, his transition to human was in vain.
In the Cool With You mv the woman is a cupid who fell in love with a man to the point of completely forgetting what her job is. Throughout the MV you see her ignore a chancs to make the guy fall in love with other woman because now she wants him.
At the end of the day "A" MV, she gives up her divinity to live her human love.
At first everything works out but then when she goes to meet him, another cupid appears behind the guy and she understands everything.
She is desperate because she knows that the other cupid is going to make her boyfriend fall in love with another woman..
And that's what happens.
Now she's alone without love and without her immortality.

As ARMY I took major hint from that big painting in the museum. BTS Blood, Sweat & Tears use many classical painting as part of their MV narrative so I pick up fast that this NJ mv story is based on Eros and Psyche myth. So many reactors kinda miss that hint though (I'm happy you look it up), but it's also fun to hear many different kind of interpretation.

Okay so let me explain the "Cool With You" MV with Side A & B. It's basically a modern version of Eros(Cupid) Psyche, and Venus(Aphrodite).
Before I start, the girl from Squid Game (Hoyeon) is Eros, her love interest is Psyche, and the old guy at the end of Side B is Venus.
Also, keep it in mind that Psyche is mortal while Eros and Venus are immortal. Furthermore and this is referring to the original story, Aphrodite is so jealous of Psyche's beauty that she send her son, Cupid, on a mission to go pierce the heart of Psyche and make him fall in love with a creature or an unworthy person.
Now In Side A, Cupid's job is to make others find their love interests and fall in love but she ended up falling in love with a mortal herself, which is Psyche. The two individuals in the painting are Cupid and Psyche and that scene also shows their role, the girl being Cupid and the guy being the person that's laying on the bed, which is Psyche. Her interest is Psyche is what causes everything to go completely left. After she started having feelings for Psyche, the couple that she set up together in the elevator of side A broke up in that one seen where she sits at the cafe after the whole incident , her powers are lessening. At the end of Side A, her standing in the rain is somewhat a sybolization of Cupid scratching or piercing herself with her own arrow and pleading to be human so she can fall in love. She's able to feel the rain touch her skin, symbolizing that her wish came true.
Now Side B is a continuation, she is human, he is now able to see her, and they fall in love and date. Fast forward to the street scene, the guy that shows up behind her boyfriend is Aphrodite. Aphrodite finds out as to why things were messing up and decided to correct it, turning Cupid back into their original state and basically erases her human status. Additionally, making Psyche fall in love with the girl walking behind Cupid and that's the end.
Now where does NewJeans play in all of this? they are Cupid's guardian angels to make sure that cupid is doing her job and everything is going accordingly, hence why they are the only ones able to see her throughout the entirety of the MV.

The actor is chaowei Liang, a legend Hongkong movie star, he had acted in Ang Lee’s movie. Actually today the news he appeared in new jean’s mv just trended in Chinese social media😂the combination of him and new jeans is so weird, you can imagine like seeing Al Pacino appeared in K-pop mv
for me it was the fact that she was first wearing all black, then when she was with him she was wearing light colors. by the end, she has a black coat on but still colorful clothes, almost as if her grief and depression were now mixed with the remaining happiness she had on her time with him.
First time watching one of your videos and immediately subscribed! I watched these videos today as well and landed on the concept like you did. I also really appreciate the fact that you looked up the painting. I was brought to tears when they are crossing the street and he didn't see her anymore 😢.
We can see this kind of story very often in our drama a supernatural entity who falls in love with a mortal and it goes well for a while but it often ends badly. Hotel de luna, My roomate is a gumiyo, Goblin, the bride of habaek, moon lover (another drama with IU), korean odysee and so many others. but yes new jeans are one of the rare group told stories in this way. they even take the risk of putting it back in their own MV and leave the main role to Ho-yeo
So far I have not found many reactors

The Cool With You MV references the story of Cupid and Psyche, But the gender roles are swapped around. Hoyeon plays the role of Cupid, Micol plays the role of Psyche and Tony is Venus.

This video is based off the story of Cupid and Psyche. Hoyeon plays the role of cupid and the man shes in love with is Psyche. Her in the rain at the end of the first video is her shedding her god powers becoming human to be with the guy. at the end at the cross walk tony leung is Venus making her a god again and making the guy fall in love with another girl. NewJeans are like guardian angels looking over her making sure shes doing her job.

My own guess according to internet , Taehyung are supposed appear in one of the MV , he might be the real men for the Cupid later at the Get Up MV.

Other than the modern interpretation of Eros and Psyche, this mv kinda remind me of the idol life. They sing about love and many of their music help others fall in love, but they cannot fall in love themselves due to contract and fan culture. If they want love, they often have to give up their status as idol like how Hoyeon gave up her role as deity to be with her Psyche.
