WOW! What a fun video and amazing the contacts that were made with a trampoline frame held in the air with a tractor. LOL. Did you have any issues? It looks like your coax was your RF ground.
Hey Carson.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. The only issue I had was not enough time to experiment more with the radiation pattern of it in the vertical position.. Did it radiate better off the sides or on the ends of the loop.. It was getting hot and by 11am we were all tired and ready to quit, LOL.. I think the band conditions were deteriorating at that time too.. but it would be fun to hang it up on a 30ft wood power pole with a rope and pulley and play with it some more which I just might do, LOL.. The trouble with messing about and having fun is that one day you will accidently stumble on an antenna configuration that blasts through the airwaves and then life will never be the same again ! Great job letting Noah do the calling. Start them young - you never know when it might be an essential skill.
Very true John.. We just never know till we try it.. I don't think we broke any barriers here but we still had some successful calls.. I think it performed better laying horizontal, but we really didn't take the time to analyze it.. We had a few hours of playing, made a video to share the adventure and had a lot of family fun.. Have you ever considered working amateur radio satellites? I work satellites (super fun) and you have the dream landscape horizon to horizon there. Once you have trees near it absolutely kills your UHF signal. Also, being in Iowa you should easily be able to work both coasts.
Yes I have thought of it often.. That is something we need to try and I think would be a fun adventure.. I've never operated UHF or VHF in the ham radio world so it would be a learning experience.. Was the match better with the legs off and the loop turned up? I hope to build a similar one soon but mine will be fed magnetic loop style with a vac capacitor and coax loop. Well done!
Hi Ron.. Sorry, I didn't look at it when we went vertical.. I just matched it and we kept going.. However, I did put my MFJ antenna analyzer on it before we started while it was laying horizontal and the SWR was less than 8:1 on 20m.. I was surprised it was that low to be honest.. The weather was warming up so we made 5 calls and quit.. I wanted to explore more while it was vertical to see which direction it radiated the best (off the side or in line with the loop).. It would be fun to set some 40ft poles around it and raise it up horizontal and see how it performed (and give the neighbors something to talk about, LOL).. I love it! That would easily tune 80 meters on my MFJ -9232 qrp loop tuner. Maybe even 160. I made something out of pvc once about 1/3 that size and made contacts on 40 meters and hit the reverse beacon network on 80. My XYL called it the stargate antenna. My neighbor asked what that was. I told her it was an antenna. She looked at me like I was nuts and just said, “oookaaay”. Hihi Anyways I subscribed. de n5vwn P.S. Now I’m gonna keep my eyes out for any blown out trampolines.
Why did you not connect the shield side of the coax to the other side of the loop? Connected the way you have it, it is nothing more than a curved end fed.
@@FarmRCPilot Because that's how a true loop is connected! Any loop has the center of the coax connected to one side of the gap and the shield side to the other side of the gap. The way you have it connected, it is no more than an end fed antenna bent into a circle. Connected as a conventional loop, it will be much quieter of RX too.

Have you ever considered working amateur radio satellites? I work satellites (super fun) and you have the dream landscape horizon to horizon there. Once you have trees near it absolutely kills your UHF signal. Also, being in Iowa you should easily be able to work both coasts.
Yes I have thought of it often.. That is something we need to try and I think would be a fun adventure.. I've never operated UHF or VHF in the ham radio world so it would be a learning experience.. Was the match better with the legs off and the loop turned up? I hope to build a similar one soon but mine will be fed magnetic loop style with a vac capacitor and coax loop. Well done!
Hi Ron.. Sorry, I didn't look at it when we went vertical.. I just matched it and we kept going.. However, I did put my MFJ antenna analyzer on it before we started while it was laying horizontal and the SWR was less than 8:1 on 20m.. I was surprised it was that low to be honest.. The weather was warming up so we made 5 calls and quit.. I wanted to explore more while it was vertical to see which direction it radiated the best (off the side or in line with the loop).. It would be fun to set some 40ft poles around it and raise it up horizontal and see how it performed (and give the neighbors something to talk about, LOL).. I love it! That would easily tune 80 meters on my MFJ -9232 qrp loop tuner. Maybe even 160. I made something out of pvc once about 1/3 that size and made contacts on 40 meters and hit the reverse beacon network on 80. My XYL called it the stargate antenna. My neighbor asked what that was. I told her it was an antenna. She looked at me like I was nuts and just said, “oookaaay”. Hihi Anyways I subscribed. de n5vwn P.S. Now I’m gonna keep my eyes out for any blown out trampolines.
Why did you not connect the shield side of the coax to the other side of the loop? Connected the way you have it, it is nothing more than a curved end fed.

@@FarmRCPilot Because that's how a true loop is connected! Any loop has the center of the coax connected to one side of the gap and the shield side to the other side of the gap. The way you have it connected, it is no more than an end fed antenna bent into a circle. Connected as a conventional loop, it will be much quieter of RX too.
