  • Toccata in G BuxWV 165, Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707)
Harpsichord by Carl Conrad Fleischer, Hamburg, 1716
    Michael Fuerst, harpsichord
    Christoph Schönbeck, audio and video
Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte, Holstenwall 24, 20355 Hamburg
The Fleischer harpsichord was made in Hamburg by Carl Conrad Fleischer in the year 1716. Along with the famous 1674 painting showing Dieterich Buxtehude and Johann Adam Reincken, it is held in the collection of the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte in the city where it was originally built. The instrument was restored in 2019 by Ulrich Weymar, whereby the original stringing was reconstructed according to indications given on the original jacks. It has 3 registers (2 x 8', 1 x 4') and a lute stop. The registrations in this recording include 2 x 8', 1 x 4' (opening), the front 8' (from 1:09), and the two 8' stops together (from 2:18). The recording took place in the music room of the museum on 11 October, 2022. Many thanks to the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte and especially Dr. Claudia Horbas and Prof. Bettina Probst for supporting this project.

Get it why Bach admired Buxtehude. (Also, marvelous performance and gorgeous instrument.)

The North Germans tried to emulate Froberger in many ways - composing canzonas, suites and toccatas for harpsichord as well as the organ. Although Froberger was never in Hamburg, his music was well-known there - not least because of Matthias Weckmann.

So here is a harpsichord that Buxtehude might have played, sounding brilliant under the fingers of MF. Just wonderful!

Thanks for writing! I feel this harpsichord is perfect for the Buxtehude aesthetic, however it was built about 9 years after his death. It is quite possible that Reincken played it, however. The Flemish instrument on the painting featured in this video which belonged to Reincken is essentially the only evidence we have as to the kind of harpsichord Buxtehude would have known. I do love the Hamburg sound, though.

They really loved treble…. That’s one thing about many of these works they’re shrill to my ears. Thank god for the low pass filter!
I mean incredible instrument and playing as well. It was just a shock after the previous piece.
