Sun-colored amethyst (purple) glass dates between 1881 and 1917. Manganese was added to glass to make it clear, but when exposed to sunlight it turned the glass purple. The main source of manganese was Germany, and World War I disrupted the availability of it. US glass makers stop using it at that time.

Sad to see old forgotten graves like this. But the reality is that generations die off and there’s no one to remember.

I agree! We have an old 1800’s family Cemetary in Oklahoma on land my family sold. They allow my cousin to come me once a year and clean up the graves. I wish it were the same with Cemetary locations like this. Future Generations need to keep up with these.

wow ... boy howdy this reminds me of running thru the woods as a child, working our way thru the briars. We weren't looking for old cemeteries, but we sure did find some treasures - turtles, snakes, rocks, creeks, trees, wildflowers - the best childhood ever !!! :)

On the grave that is about 10 feet long, my theory is that maybe they lost several children due to a disease outbreak or something that caused several deaths in a short period. There could be several children or shorter people buried side-by-side so perhaps 4 or 5 graves inside of it.

  • @Hurricaneintheroom

I had to go into a very wooded place in Virginia to get at a tombstone that had all the names of the family on it. There were briars and other stuff but I was able to get passed it and take pics of the tombstone and what was left of the house.

Fascinating. You might want to research if there were any cholera outbreaks in the area. The large grave might be a family. Here in Kentucky, we had several cholera outbreaks starting first in the early 1830's, then in 1849 which was particularly deadly (one in seven people died) and then, I believe the last outbreak was in the 1850's. There were cases of cholera from time to time but the larger outbeaks could wipe out entire families over a matter of days to weeks. Very sad. Thank you for your videos.I really enjoy them.

Fabulous. I'd have thought Georgia, being one of the older colonies, would have opened up earlier. Of course I know my ancestors from NJ were facing a wilderness. The expansion in the early days, must have been just as brutal as the expansion into the interior & out West. We honestly don't know just how tough those early pioneers were. Incredible people, with incredible dreams.

When we used to do a lot of woods exploring like that, I always thought that maybe next time I'll bring a pair of snips with me, or loppers, and but I never remembered to do it. I should have just kept a pair in the car.
It was very interesting to hear Dad discussing the rock graves. They are completely, or almost completely, unknown up here in NJ. Pretty cool. But I have seen a few graves that are completely cemented over, that may look like that underneath the cement. But they are nowhere near that big.

It was fascinating to see how the rocks were placed on it. It would be so rewarding if ever could find exactly who all is buried there. So thankful that you n other Robert along with Dan that you take a interest in old cemeteries n documenting them. There’s not many people like you guys who care enough to do this. I am absolutely fascinated by this channel. I've always wanted to be able to find a forgotten grave or cemetery. Somebody told me once that you really only existed if somebody remembers you or your name. What an honor it would be to find an unknown cemetery and say those names out loud or, lacking a decipherable headstone or marker, simply contemplate who might be buried there. To "remember" them. Thanks for helping me find those unknown graves vicariously by watching your wonderful videos!!!

Your right. God really is the important one. I think it's their history not that that's important to God but, they knew how to survive in a time that today we may need to survive ourselves. A time is coming that we may need to know that history. Their history what the knew to stay alive. We have lost so much history and knowledge of our forefather. It makes me sad. My family is trying to find some of their history to try to survive. This is one reason I like Robert. Because he believes in and wants to preserve as much of that history as he can. I love what Robert dose . ♥️

This might be a dumb guess but in that huge grave do you think it's possible a horse might be buried there? Obviously 250 - 300 years ago they would have owned one or more and maybe they had a favorite that died and they wanted to be buried with it? I've heard of people having their pets buried near them and back then I'd have to think you could grow pretty attached to a horse if you spent all day with them.

You need a machete to do this kind of exploring. I bet an investigation of original land grants would lead to the likely identity of this Cemetary. Any surviving members may have been dislocated during reconstruction at the end of the Civil war. I imagine family attempted to keep up the graveyard until too old to continue. Possibly some amateur genealogist will find this vid and help to identify. Keep on doing these vids as it is a documentation of the earlier settlers lives and daily realities .

I bet the grave in the middle is a child. I love taking these trips with you. lol Genealogy and history are two of my passions. I'm not sure if you've thought of this, but maybe carry a notebook and pencils/chalk with you. I've used it a lot on difficult-to-read stones. And it doesn't do any damage to the stone because you don't need to put a lot of pressure on it (especially with the chalk). and nothing is put on the stone itself except the paper held to it. You should load up your wisteria tractor for these outings!
Perhaps in a couple hundred years, archeologists will give these graves the attention they deserve. They'll determine that people buried in such a manner must have been important leaders, and their tombs arrayed to align with some solar something.

Y'all need to learn from Kentuckians who are Briarhoppers, how to get through a mess of saw briars. 🤣🤣🤣 Don't lose sight of someone... sounds ominous, the Rough Edge lore looms. That cemetery is as desolate and lonely looking place as I have ever seen. I wonder what the plaque said? Hmmm, stolen, I guess. Great information from Dan on the grave construction!! Walter said, it was an experience, it looks it! Another Rough Edge gem, excellent!! 👍👍 !!!

I - came mostly prepared; waders with steel plates in the soles, rip-stop tactical pants, a bulky jacket, safety glasses, and leather gloves. But I plan to invest in chaps! The rip-stop pants only partially protected from scratches. But I fared better than Robert and Dan! (Walter Mallard Photography)

@@DTRBrianMallard hi! I noticed there might be a top half of the round imprint missing and it looked to me like 1849; it definitely says RIP at the bottom of the circle.

The darker the purple, the older it is. Found alot of glass pieces in old homesteads in SE Texas. Daddy and my sister and I would take walks and visit the sites.

An old farm scythe might be a good investment for you on these adventures. You could have cut a nice path in no time.

I believe I recognize the marking on thr glass. I could not see it very well, but Boyd Glass if Cambridge, OH used a mark of that shape with a "B" inside the parallelogram.
