Bucharest has a similar HDI to eastern Switzerland. Which is the most developed country in the world. The difference between rural and urban is just too big...the poor are really poor. .

    I'd say things are definitely moving forward, higher GDP brings with it more infrastructure, better buildings, more development in general. But make no mistake, Romania is still quite a way behind even other formerly communist countries, especially Czechia or Estonia or Slovenia. This development is also quite unequally distributed in the territory, with the region of Moldova lagging more and more behind, one of the big problems being specifically the lack of proper road and rail infrastructure there - no highway leading to any important city in Moldova, not even Iasi, and rail infrastructure is crumbling and undermaintained.
    But it is notable that Romania had an especially brutal communist regime, even worse than what the rest of the eastern block had, and in 1990 we were one of the worst countries in Europe. The starting point was much lower than even the other communist countries, like Hungary or Poland, and thus there is a lot still left to recover in terms of infrastructure. The Romanian GDP is mostly caught up, at least with Hungary or Poland, but you can tell right away once you cross the border from Hungary to Romania that there is still missing road and rail infrastructure. I, for one, am hopeful that it will be built in the following few years, especially because we also have some advantages, such as a well balanced spread of natural resources, the importance of the Black Sea port of Constanta, a territory that is less vulnerable to foreign aggression from the east, neighbors which are smaller and less competitive (this is double edged though, because it means on the one hand that our local entrepreneurs have an easier time retaining the local market share when it comes to perishable goods or local services, but on the other hand that our immediate export markets can afford less goods), and a fairly sizable and reasonably well educated population, water availability among the highest in the world with an extensive hydrographic network which is almost entirely internal (no international rivers aside from the Danube, Prut and Tisza, which means readily available renewable hydro power potential, potential for agriculture and so on), the third highest geothermal energy potential in Europe, one of the highest agricultural potentials in the EU per capita (currently still underutilized though), and so on. One thing that would help greatly would be if the eastern Black Sea Caucasus region, as well as central Asia would see more economic development, because trade would then flow logically through the port of Constanta to and from there, but it doesn't look like it will happen in the near future.
    Still, as I said, there is a sizable gap still to recover, as well as challenges of unequal regional development, increasing inequality, corruption still being an issue 30 years after the revolution, and various instances of political mismanagement.

      Coming from Italy, my country despite beign slightly behind big western European Countries like France or Germany, still sits in a high position in terms of GDP per capita, not at the levels of the US, Canada, Norway or Denmark, but in a fairly High Position considering our geographic position. Still we have some areas of the south that are very underdeveloped and other areas in central-northen Italy that are very developed.

    • @costinhalaicu2746
      @costinhalaicu2746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@usts6su19 The case of Italy is very particular and quite peculiar, I remember reading something interesting about how even public servants are payed according to a different salary grid based on their location, north earning more and south less. That's highly unusual for a unitary state especially. Another interesting development is that Czechia and Slovenia seem to have caught up with Italy, at least on average, although I am sure places like Venice and Milan are above, say, Ljubljana, while places like Naples are probably below right now.
      Obviously I wish all of us in the EU well, and prosperity, but I believe given some 15-20 years, southern Europe and eastern Europe will be on more or less the same levels of economic development, while central European countries that are adjacent to Germany, like Czechia, will probably be even slightly better off.
      Still, Italy is the third most populous country in the EU, so it does have a greater say in what happens. It remains to be seen how well the Italian government and politicians will use this advantage in the future, as well as how much the threat of a resurgent Russia will cause eastern countries to divert funds from the economy to the military, thus hindering our progress.

    • @usts6su19
      @usts6su19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@costinhalaicu2746 Yes definitely, I can give you a first hand example of this widening gap between northen-central Italy and Southern Italy.
      I have some family members that live in the south, my family that lives in Central Italy earns several times their income, they barely speak English, therefore they don't have access to many job opportunities online and at the same time they don't have access to many english-speaking platforms that could help them develope useful skills (I.e. skillshare or Khan Academy) this might seem like a stupid example, but the knowledge of the english language opens up so many opportunities for personal development that this creates a tremendous opportunity gap. During the summer I can relatively easily find a job in a big company to earn some money to save or spend on personal things, while my cousin never worked because down there he would earn 1/3 for almost the same job and with no guarantees or regulations.
      Finally if I where to compare the standards of living it would be like Germany/USA/France vs Greece/Southern Spain. On the other hand they have a very beautiful weather and landscape, many milions of tourists go there every year because of the beauty of the place, unfortunately they still lag behind economically.

    I like your positive attitude but sorry to tone it down just a little with my own Romanian view of this. Some parts are impressive, others just improvements but on the Down side.... You never really can make Communist built Boxed garbage that is still being built today in that style sadly... look good. You cant make that communist style look appealing or giving you a good vibe no matter how much renovation and facelifting you do on it. =) Yea... communists really suck, they had no imagination at all... criminally boring. I mean its Brutalist architecture or similar either way =).
    Now sure I know these kinds of structures exist and are being build in the WEST too... simply due to how simple (cheap) and easy they are to make I guess. Ive seen this types of buildings almost everywhere Ive been... like in Germany for instance, but its not that predominant, or at very least they try to shift away from that quite often specially in important cities.
    Also I like to attack Bucharest , the Capital of Romania... which is pretty much from many points of view kind of a black hole for funds, and in my opinion you dont really see enough improvement in infrastructure, order, or being more clean. Its water pipelines are usually in poor condition and they didnt manage to do much about it for many years now...
    Of course they will argue that Bucharest also produces a lot more money than other cities... lol sure... since its capital all corporations and companies usually open headquarters there, which means a lot of money flows through Bucharest. Also Constanta port and hub is close to Bucharest , drawing more capital from that. What Im saying is if it wasnt the Capital it would be for sure in a deplorable state, judging only by the results and improvements... other than a few luxury new areas that popped up in Bucharest. (Oh and do something about Gara de Nord, it looks like a Trainwreck from the outside at least..depressing... then again the trains are kind of deplorable too so yea thats that. And fix your sales of tickets digitally, its absurd how much you confuse foreigners there)
    Dont get me wrong I like my country .. geographically is a marvel, people are usually great... specially to strangers from abroad. Its a very safe country... contrary to what some would expect its a lot safer than most of Western Europe's big cities. But the Politicians are weak... 30+ years from a Revolution, nothing impressive comes to mind , pathetic and sad really.. heh, the Bureaucracy and centralization in the Capital is rather toxic at this point too.. I would argue, and something needs to be done about that.

Also you shown some socialist buildings that had an overpriced makeover being covered in 10 cm of polystyrene, covering all decorations. New flashy colors instead of the dusted and grayed out initial color, over any architectural decoration. The asphalt work is so bad in this country that you will wreak your car's suspension if you drive a few hundred km. Even the Bucharest belt, the new portions are really an endurance test for your attention to avoid holes and bumps. In the cities car dependent suburbias are the only thing that grow. Rarely a sidewalk, and that is so narrow and occupied by cars. The new bike lanes are a joke, sudden interrupted by stiff borders.

      @Romanian presenter bad city planing, boulevards and areas are full of bad quality buildings, many beautiful historical buildings destroyed, only some parts o center is beautiful.

    I do uber part time in Bucharest and I had a lot of youngsters as clients. They were between 14 and 17 and I had to take them to different courses like sports, music, movie producers, athlets, science. From this point of view, I am very happy about our future because the majority of them said “I will go abroad for experience and return to apply it here”. 🥹
