S1 - Ep 240 - Carolusberg - A Copper Mining Community Near Springbok!

  • We were told that we must visit the copper mining community of Carolusberg, so we made a plan to stop off at the small town to see it for ourselves. We could not believe it when we were told by a local that Simon van der Stel's old copper mine was just outside of town. We did some research and learnt that his party sank a mine shaft here in 1685. We found out later that he was actually looking for gold, but found copper instead. I read somewhere that Carolusberg is actually a suburb of the town of Springbok. We took a drive through the streets of Carolusberg and to be honest, I was super impressed to see how clean and neat the yards, streets and houses were. This was a proud community and it was a great visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #carolusberg #northerncape #namaqualand #springbok

    Oh please! Who has the right to complain about sound. Especially as you always post apologies throughout the videos. How much would it have cost to go there ourselves. You guys are providing an essential service for FREE. We thank and love you for it!! Please don't take any unreasonableness on our part to heart. ... LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ADVENTURE😀😀😀👍

    I love your adventurous spirits taking the unintended roads- exactly what I would have done. Your commentary always more than compensates for any sound problems. This was really special and I loved travelling with you. You're absolutely right saying Namaqualand has so much more than just flowers- it's an undiscovered wonderland and very special. Fantastic and fabulous!! Thank you so much.

      We were free to stop wherever we wanted to on the long trek home because no hosts were waiting for us at any accommodation establishment and if we arrived home at midnight, that would've been cool also! 😎 We're so glad that we turned in to Carolusberg and got to see Simon van der Stel's old mineshaft with our own eyes. To witness such incredible history, is amazing! Thank you for being so understanding of our sound issues and for discovering a little more of this 'undiscovered wonderland'. That is indeed exactly what it is! 🤩🚗

    Hi Curtis and Sonia,
    Thank you for revisiting Carolusberg to supply us with the whole picture. It is much appreciated that, despite the sound issues, you returned and showcase the Simon van der Stel copper mine and this mining town. Valuable historical information.
    Last time I saw Curtis so starved was when he was tucking into the curry vetkoek at Van Stadensrus I think it was.
    Home sweet home reminded me of my student days.
    We are just glad you are safely home. Wanted to say, have a welcome rest, but realise you are back to work.

      It was super interesting finding the old copper mine and to think the first explorations were done 330+ years ago, just blew our minds! 🤯 Yup, the hunger was intense at almost 17:00 in the afternoon and those toasties were absolutely divine, so I gobbled them up in no time! 😁🥪 Your memory indeed serves you well. We bought those vetkoek (the best I've ever had by the way) in Zastron and had them on our way to Van Stadensrus. We were happy to be home, but did jump back in the saddle again immediately at work. We don't only travel hard, we work hard too! 😇🚗

    Curtis and Sonia, I really enjoyed this video and your feedback. Just a couple of points:-
    Australia was once connected to Southern Africa before the breakup so that is why the south of Western Australia looks similar.
    Secondly, unlike SA which has a lot of mountains, Australia is pretty flat with only low hills.This is the reason I enjoy your videos as the scenery is magnificent!!!
    Also I work for a truck company called Scania which sell a lot of trucks in SA and Namibia and have had people from SA work with us.(these are a lot of double trailer trucks there I notice like here)
    Our 2 countries share a lot of similarities and hopefully I may get an opportunity to go there one day. Safe travels. I look forward as all your followers to your next trip.

      Ah yes! Plate tectonics! 🌍 I had all but forgotten about that and how all the continents were once one called Pangea! 🗺 Sonia and I had a keen interest in this subject in the late 90's and even borrowed a whole NatGeo series (on video cassette still!) about that from our local library, so artfully presented by Sir David Attenborough. Thank you for the info, all which makes so much more sense to me again now! 👌 Hopefully we get to trade places with you one day and we can explore each other's continents. That would be super cool. 🚗😎

    Thank-you for taking us with on this incredibly interesting and memorable trip. Carolusberg was another surprise. Yes neatness and tidiness is the lasting impression. The Simon vd Stel copper mine was a great find too. With regards to the format due to the microphone issues, as previously stated - I enjoyed the narrations, especially Sonia's narrations, her rich soothing voice-overs with interesting facts is a pleasure to listen to...as is yours Curtis...I might add...(before I ruin the friendship 🤣) The new building going up next to the N7 at Malmesbury is the new private hospital and shopping centre. The Strand really looked great in your closing shot...by far the best place to invest, and definitely the best beach in the City of Cape Town.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The friendship is intact! 😁 Let me tell you something, Sonia's voice was far from rich and soothing every time I called her to the office to come and do a voiceover. 🤣 Simon van der Stel's mine was quite amazing to see, especially if one thinks they didn't have the roads or means of transport we have today. Simply unbelievable! I missed the construction project next to the N7, but looking back on the footage, it seems quite a major project. Thanks for the info, I'll be watching it with keen interest every time we drive past. I don't know Malmesbury well, but it's also a town that seems to be growing in leaps and bounds. Strand has been home again now for almost a decade again after a few years away and, at this point in our lives at least, we can't imagine calling any other place home. As for its beach, it sometimes still takes my breath away. 😍🌊 Thank you for criss-crossing the Namaqualand with us!

    Thanks for all the clearly displayed road signs. Children's graves are always a sad sight, yes, and what touched me in our nation's history - the children that died in the Anglo Boer War aka the South African War, and then the kids at Kinderlê. The latter such a descriptive name in typical Nama Afrikaans tradition

    Hi you two!
    This was another interesting trip in the stony country.
    A super clean town, again with a centuries old heritage. I was really surprised by Van der Stel's turning up there. I thought he was only into wine.
    Your trip home was also nice, but looong. Those passes on the N7 had me gripping my seat every now and again.
    I am glad you made it home safely and looking forward to get on board again soon!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're done for now with the stony country, but what a wild and fantastic ride it was! ⛰️🚗 Mr van der Stel seems to have had a finger into a few other pies, not only the wine variety! We found the mine (I almost said wine!) extremely interesting and couldn't believe that we were looking at the actual site where his party sunk a shaft 330+ years ago. That was awesome! 🤩 The trip home was indeed very long, we were both rather bushed that evening! Don't get too comfortable in that armchair, your seat is reserved for the next episode on Tuesday. 😎🚗

    As a University student from Windhoek, Namibia, I travelled along these roads multiple times over the years in the sixties, usually in a clapped out VW beetle with four people and all their luggage in it. Thank you for letting me ride along with you to experience that long road once again, mile after mile, and re-live those 24 hour endurance drives. I have lived in Australia since then (chicken run!) and must express my amazement at the superb condition of the roads, after what I saw further north in Africa, and after reports of mass neglect and lack of maintenance of infrastructure in the new rainbow nation. My compliments!

    Goooood morning. Thanks for allowing me on the back seat of the bugmobile. Beautifull, well kept little town. It facinated me that nomatter how dry it is around most of the towns, there will always be some green trees and well kept gardens in the smallest towns. Well I had to leave the backseat to get back to Pretoria but just a last story about the road between Springbok and Van Rhynsdorp. In the 60's it was a gravel road but then slowly but surly the goverment started laying down the tare road. Much to our delight. Somewere in the Knersvlakte, before Van Rhynsdorp there must be a road turning off to Dowsetheylight. Always tickled us that one
    Thank you for a nice, educational trip for people to get to know SA better. Specialy places like Namaqualand. I still have to sit down and look at the full series. Will do so when I have time and if Escom allows me. Thanks once again. Be safe.

      Carolusberg was a very neat and tidy town with many well cared-for properties, which was a joy to see! So interesting that you mention Dowsethelight. We completely missed the sign, but another regular viewer commented under our Garies video that it was some kind of signal to soldiers in the Anglo-Boer War to dim the lights so as not to be seen by the enemy. But I really don't recall the specifics. If you scroll through the comments of Episode 222, you may find it there. 🤷🏼‍♂️🛣️ Happy watching of our earlier trips before you jumped on board, there are certainly enough to keep you busy until we collect you again for the next episode on Tuesday! 😁🚗

    Hi Curtis and Sonia,
    There is also a third option, redo the trip with working sound 🤔😆😆 No, seriously the footage was awesome. It would be great to see Kakamas, Hotazhel, Keimos, Upington and surrounding areas. I traveled through these areas but never in the town itself so was great to see what these towns looked like. If you can, another place to go is Namibia and following places, Oranjemund (across Alex Bay) road to Rosh Pinah along Orange river, Aus, Luderitz, Fish River Canyon.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed exploring Namaqualand with us! They were tough guys back then, so they didn't let a few cliffs and mountains and passes and such stand in their way! I would imagine their modes of transportation would've been oxwagons and horses. 🐂🐎 It was difficult to get complete info about his trek to this region, but as far as I understand it, he was in the area looking for gold deposits and happened upon copper deposits instead. The info available online is rather vague. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We look forward to you joining us as we visit more places soon! 🤩🚗

    I am always so happy to see large, healthy trees in these otherwise arid towns and villages, where water is evidently very precious and scarce. I imagine there is water in the deep recesses of the earth, that their roots are able to reach. Initially, all “baby” trees require regular watering, so someone clearly nurtured all of these mature adult trees whilst they were still becoming established.
    Carolusberg looks so neat and well maintained. Most of the homes you drove past, clearly well-loved. Some very pretty gardens, as well - belying the arid countryside.
    Your homeward bound trip was a quite a contrast after the Namakwaland adventures. The Kardoessie stop clearly provided much appreciated sustenance 😁
    The views approaching your home sweet home were glorious.
    Do you usually feel buoyed up after a trip, or is there a brief moment of anticlimax when you finally arrive home?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We heard more than once on our travels through this arid region that there are indeed large bodies of underground water and even springs in some places, so it does sound like there is water deep down in the bowels of the earth which these root systems tap into. 🌴💚 I do think though that perhaps some of the springs have dried up in recent years, the country has experienced severe droughts the last few decades. I was so excited to finally be able to stuff my face with those toasties, I was starving!! 😨 When I edited the video and I saw the views overlooking False Bay and Strand, I caught my breath because it was so beautiful. One would think that we would be used to it after living here for such a long time, but it just simply never gets old. 🤩🌊 To answer your question, we never feel buoyed up, we're very happy when we arrive back home after a week on the road and are then ready to contribute to the economy again for four weeks before we take to the roads again. Our motto, if I haven't told you before, is Work Hard, Travel Hard(er)! 😇

    In the beginning of this episode when Sonia started to talk it sounded like she was telling us...goodbye...we are done with our travels...and I shouted at the laptop..."Dont you dare stop travelling now!!"...and then the message became clearer...and my hart got kack to it's normal rythm.. Don't worry abouth the sound problem...it is now forgotten...the footage is awesome.. And a BIG thankyou for visiting the Westcoast and Namaqualand and showing many people again the places where they grew up and some people the places that they probably never will be able to visit. And those trucks that drive the ore, if ever you use the road between Hanover and Petrusville you will see the destruction those trucks are doing to the roads. And just something on the Engen garage at Klawer...if you come from Namibia and you still have Namibian $ with you then you can use it here to fill up with fuel. See you in the next trip. I am emailing you about something I want to discuss with you.

      Nope, we're still very much on the move! 😁 We waited a very long time for our nest to be empty of four-legged and feathered children and now that we're finally there, there's no stopping us. 🚗🤩 Every so often, Sonia will tell me with a very serious face that she has something important to talk to me about and then I think uh-oh, she's going to tell me she's tired of travelling every five weeks and my heart does exactly what yours did. I think she just messes with me because she loves it just as much as I do. That's how she keeps me on the straight-and-narrow. And it works! 🤣🤣 So glad you enjoyed our trip through Namaqualand, we loved every moment too! Good to know that I'll be able to use my NAD at that Klawer Engen, I shall definitely do so one day when we've crossed that bridge! 😉🇳🇦 I can only imagine what those sidetippers must do to that road, judging by how many of them there are on the roads we travelled on. Crazy! No wonder the roads look like they do in some areas. 🚛🤷🏼‍♂️ I'll be looking out for your email. It might take me a few days to respond though, between work commitments and all.

    Curtis and Sonia, thanks again for a great video! Personally, the sound didn’t bother me at all- I was so focused on the great scenery! As I mentioned before, we emigrated to the States 22 y ago, so I’ve been enjoying your videos tremendously. Seeing those Stellenbosch mountains brought back a lot of memories( I studied there in early 80’s) Wow! I am curious: do you have a limit on the distance you travel from Strand? I grew up in the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, and I would love if you would do a video on it, but I do realize it is very far north of you guys. Again, thank you SO much( I even got my husband hooked on your videos 😃)! 🌻

It was certainly a memorable one with all the incredible landscapes and one we won't ever forget. It was awesome having you on board and we look forward to you hopping on again to wherever the roads may lead us! 🛣️🤩 I must admit when I watched back the footage of our trip home and as we got to the Boland and closer to home, I was also blown away by the sheer natural beauty of this area we call home. From the Stellenbosch mountains to the white sandy beaches of Strand, everything is just wow! ⛰️🌊 To answer your question, we don't really have a limit distance-wise, but because we have a week set aside for travelling every time, we have to ensure that we don't have to travel for longer than a day (in daylight hours if we can) to reach our destination. I see Vaalharts is near Warrenton in the Northern Cape and we still have some exploring to do in that province, so I've made a note and I hope to be able to include it in the route of a future trip somehow. 😎🚗 Ultimately we'll have to fly to our destination and rent a vehicle from there to explore the area.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only have good things to say about the Renault Kwid. All but five of the 250+ videos currently on our channel, were shot while we were travelling in a Kwid. It's reliable, economical and comfortable and with its high ground clearance for a sedan, we're able to navigate 95% of roads fairly easily with no issues. Two things to keep in mind always with a Kwid when travelling long-distance, especially on gravel. Keep the speeds low, we never do more than 80 on gravel and seldom more than 100 on tar. We're not into high-performance vehicles anyway, so that doesn't bother us. We prefer going slow because for us it's about what we can see as we travel and not how quickly we can arrive at our destination. They almost always have a few squeaks and rattles too, but we're used to that by now. That's it as far as our experiences with the Kwiddie goes. 😍🚗

    I haven't watched all the videos of this trip, I fell behind a little. I have a hearing problem so either you fixed the problem and re-uploaded or it wasn't too significant.
    That road from Vanrhynsdorp heading south, and really from the time you hit the OliphantsRivier, must be one of my favourite drives. Until Picketberg at least.
    I'm curious if the road past Porterville wouldn't be shorter for you, that first one after the pass? It is certainly more scenic.
    Carolusberg must be flippen hot in summer. I saw hardly any vegetation growing there.
    You stopped short of Kakamas. Do yourself a favour, when you get there, go to Die Pienk Padstal and order the ribs. I know the guy there (family of my ex). He does the very best.
    Keep up the vids.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, we had to head home sooner or later! We have yet to explore the rest of the Northern Cape, including Kakamas. I'll definitely keep Die Pienk Padstal in mind when we're headed in that direction again. I'm a big fan of ribs, so don't need much convincing to give those a try! 😁 I've finalised the route for our next trip already and let's see where that takes us. We worked around the sound issues with voiceovers and edited-in background sounds and such, but that's so not us and we had a really hard time with that. We uploaded as is and that was that. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Fortunately we have a brand new upgraded mic system, so hopefully we won't have a repeat of those woes. I'm glad the sound issues didn't bother you too much. The road from Porterville is definitely shorter as far as I can remember, but we try and take different routes every time as far as possible and this was a straight shot home after a fantastic, but extremely tiring, trip through the Namaqualand region. I hope you catch up on some of the videos you've missed, those landscapes are something else! Always happy to have you along for the ride! ⛰️🚗
