My Dad Gunner William (Bill) Harvey was in the 64 (Northumbrian) Heavy AA Regiment Royal Artillery 179 Battery (Tynemouth) before the war a Territorial Army unit. He joined No4 Army Commando serving at Lofoten, Boulogne, Dieppe, D-Day and then Flushing. He landed Uncle Beach Flushing and made his way with his section into Nieuwstraat. Alex “Mac” MacAulay, his best friend and best man at his wedding, had a rifle and was about to go into Bellamy Park. Bill who had a Tommy gun or a Bren gun pulled him back saying “I will go first.” The intelligence report records that Gunner Harvey was killed by machine gun fire on 1 November 1944. Initially buried at Biervliet now remembered with honour at Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery Holland.

Twice a week I drive through a small village and in he church yard lays 29 Commonwealth Aircrew and three German Aircrew who died near and around the once active airfield. Across the road is the small village cross with another 23 lads of the village who died in ww1 and 2. six of them are brothers.. I tip my cap as I drive by each time and think of their sacrifice and our freedom now.

I travel past the Valkenswaard War Cemetery every week and I lower my head. If I have time I will stop and walk through the cemetery and pay my respects to the men of Operation Garden.

Respect for those that stopped us becoming slaves. Wonder what they think of things now.
