Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

In 1985, 1986, or 1987, there a TV series starring Robert Hayes, Ted Striker From Airplane, as Starman,who comes back to earth in search of his biological son, and together, they go on some crazy adventures while government agencies are in their trail.
This was the first and only John Carpenter film to be nominated for Best Actor, Jeff Bridges.
Yep I remember that series. The head agency bad guy actor who was in the movie was also in the series. Not the best series but I watched it anyway. 😉
Yeah, because the son was half alien, he aged up quickly to a teenager. Starman found him in the first episode but his mother had gone missing and that's what they were doing traveling around looking for her.
For an 80's sci-fi series, it was one of the better ones.
It ran for one season. 1986-1987) and the actor's name is spelled without the "e" and is currently available on "Crackle,"

"Some country sent up a gold record... or something?" Yeah, it was us, Jen! 😜The USA! NASA, specifically. NASA sent two gold records on the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. The contents were selected by a committee headed by famous astrophysicist Carl Sagan, which contain general information, language, and music from Earth.
Fun Fact: Starman is one of the two films that John Carpenter directed where he did not compose the original music himself, the other being The Thing, which was composed by Ennio Morricone. Starman was scored by Jack Nitzsche, who had also composed the music for The Exorcist, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Stand By Me.
Wow. I had assumed he did do the theme music. Learn something every day.
Jack Nitzsche also composed the theme for the campy film "Village of the Giants" years ago, musci "borrowed" by Tarantino for his film "Deathproof."
This classic sci-fi romance doesn't get enough love when people talk about John Carpenter. It's sooo good and yes it's actor Michael Douglas whom also produced the amazing One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest :-)

"Red light stop, green light go, yellow light go very fast." has been a quote in my family since we saw this. Bridges got a well deserved Oscar nomination for this, rare at the time for a sci-fi movie.

When I was a child my dad, with a raspy voice, used to say to me "Look at that star, there's your mum...". I understood it not late; of course my mother wasn't a star or an alien, but my father had that romantic concept about what a star could mean if you look it while thinking about the beloved person that once left you...
Looks like John Carpenter knows that feeling when he made Starman; he have never been a sentimental director, but for some reason he understood the concept of romance and to be romantic, beyond the Hollywood's love stories stereotypes, that use to be more sentimental than romantic...
The concept of love, life and death goes beyond that in Starman. That's the reason the emotional scenes of the two main characters never look fake, and how easily can move your heart, and, if you drop the guard, it could end being shattered. One of these moments, especially, is the confession about the forthcoming baby...it really breaks you
Highly underrated gem from Carpenter! Karen Allen's performance is fantastic, and I love 'alien' Jeff Bridges. His doofy smile always makes me grin and he's such a sweet character.
This is a great movie, I didn't think John Carpenter had a movie like this in him. Usually it's masterpieces like The Thing and Halloween and the underrated Prince of Darkness! 😃❤

Fun Fact: When Jeff Bridges walks outside the house naked and uses a 'marble' his hair seems to stand on end. This effect was actually created by shooting Bridges hanging upside-down and then matting the shot onto the background the right way up to give him a surreal look.
Bonus Fact: Actor Jeff Bridges studied ornithology and the behavior of birds to prepare for his role as an alien in human form for this movie. Bridges particularly used the sudden jerky head movements, amongst other nuances and mannerisms, of birds for his Starman character. Bridges figured that the alien would not have human characteristics and, being encased in a human body, would act with base primitive animal instincts.
Bonus Fact: The rendezvous crater location where the Starman was to meet and return to the mother ship is a place situated just outside of Winslow, Arizona. According to the National Geographic, the site is one mile wide, 570 feet deep, and about 49,000 years old.
Another Fun Fact: Jeff Bridges used his previous performance as CLU in the movie TRON as inspiration for the Starman's speech pattern.

Thanks for watching Starman, Jen! 😃I'm glad you finally got to this one! Yes, that is Michael Douglas the actor who was the executive producer of this film. Michael Douglas was a producer on several films early in his career, and he'd been developing Starman with screenwriter Bruce A. Evans for several years at Columbia Pictures, which had also produced Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Columbia agreed to do Starman after rejecting Spielberg's alien horror-themed "Night Skies" script, which was later developed into Poltergeist and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
Fun Fact: Several other directors were considered for Starman before John Carpenter was hired for the project. Columbia was concerned that Starman was too similar to E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, which caused several directors to leave the project, including Adrian Lynne(who left to do Flashdance) and John Badham(who left to do WarGames). Tony Scott(Top Gun) and Peter Hyams(Capricorn One, Outland) were also briefly hired to direct, but both left the project due to creative differences(Scott went on to direct Top Gun; Hyams directed 2010: The Year We Make Contact). John Carpenter was hired after having directed Christine for Columbia Pictures, and wanted Starman to be more of a cross-country road adventure than a straight science fiction movie, which resulted in the script being altered to accommodate Carpenter's vision.
This movie spawned a short lived TV series of the same name. It started Robert Hayes form “Airplane” as Starman. He returns to Earth and meets his son. They go on a journey to find Jenny, who is missing, and try to evade capture by the government.
I have actually been to the crater shown at the end of the film. It is mind numbingly huge. They no longer take people down into the crater as the path is a little risky. The gold record you mentioned was sent up in one of the Voyager series, all of them were intended to leave the solar system.
Brought back great memories this was the first video we rented along with Christine ( a John Carpenter double ) when moved away from parents house to live with friends. A great heart warming film very much like E.T in one sense, but very much it's own film some great comedy moments in it also. Glad you enjoyed it.
Let's not forget Charles Martin Smith in this film, one of Hollywood's unsung heroes of cinema. And a damned fine actor.
He was in the American Graffiti films, Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid and The Untouchables. He also directed the Dolphin Tale films and the Buffy The Vampire Slayer pilot episode.
The clip on tv u asked about, if I remember correct, was from 1 of the most famous flix from it's time called, " From Here To Eternity." Growing up as a kid n the '70's, I never watched it, but was like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader memes of 2day-EVERYBODY knew of famous Beach scene, & is why was parodied n flix like "Airplane"!...I saw this at the movies when came out, & a few times later on cable & never even realized/remembered was John Carpenter! Haven't checked ur list, but if haven't seen, "Escape From New York" is top Carpenter!!✌👽❤
Yes, it's "From Here to Eternity", a very strong movie taking place in Hawaii just immediately before WWII. The two actors in this famous scene are Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr (pronounced "Carr"). This was an important movie for several reasons, among them the casting of Kerr herself: usually put into genteel, ladylike roles, she has a chance to stretch her talents here and embody somebody new for her. It took me a very long time to like this movie, but I do now: it's much, much more than this scene.
One of the more underrated 80s sci-fi movies. Jeff Bridges was fantastic in this role... he was even nominated for an Oscar for his acting in this movie. I wish Karen Allen became even bigger than she got; she was always great. :-)

i remember Jeff Bridges said that he studied how birds twitch, and the exaggerated gestures of japanese kubuki theater in preparing for this role. and btw Karen Allen is a great romantic lead...one of my all-time faves. keep on rockin

To be honest Jeff Bridges,comes across as almost childlike in the way plays the alien. Also Michael Douglas the actor an the executive producer are the same person.
I've been asking reactors to react to this film for 2yrs now and this is the first I've seen actually do it - not that Jen is one I have asked just to be clear, but I'm so glad to see that someone has finally reacted to this heart warming exploration of the human condition.

Hey, Jen! This gentle love story is an aberration in Carpenter's filmography yet it is one of his best films. It's like an adult version of "E.T."!
Carpenter did not write, score or edit this film either which is unusual for him. He was more like a director-for-hire.
Jeff Bridges was nominated for an Oscar and Karen Allen has never looked lovelier.
The black-and-white movie on the motel TV you failed to recognize which taught the alien to kiss was the enormously famous classic "From Here to Eternity" with Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster. The love scene in the surf is an iconic moment from that film that has been much referenced and parodied!
A short-lived TV series spun out of this film in which the Starman returns to teach his son. Robert Hays of "Airplane" replaced Bridges.
Yes, the actor Michael Douglas produced this and quite a few other films in the '70's and '80's.

Starman is one of those great old '80s sci-fi movies that has largely been forgotten. Happy to see you found it. You may be the first reactor to do so.
And for an encore I highly recommend another great and equally heartwarming 80s sci-fi that no one seems to remember, Francis Ford Coppola's, "Peggy Sue Got Married", starring Kathleen Turner and a very young Nick Cage. "Starman" is, as you say, like ET but from a young married woman's point of view. And "Peggy Sue Got Married" is a lot like that too. I'd describe it as "Back to the Future" but from that same perspective. It is also one of the best from that decade. So sad it has been forgotten. But you should definitely take a look. It seems right up your alley.

John Carpenter's first film is a college film he made with the co-creator of Alien, Dan O'Bannon.
Dark Star (1974) quirky, low budget, highly imaginative sci-fi classic cult film.
When you mentioned Arizona it reminded me of a song in Dark Star by John Carpenter called "Benson Arizona".

Starman was actually the second Hollywood movie to use the Voyager spacecraft (and the significant contributions of astronomer Carl Sagan to the project) as an important plot point. In 1979, two years after Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released. The movie centered around the crew of the USS Enterprise encountering an advanced alien entity of artificial intelligence that went by the name "V'Ger" and its quest to travel to Earth and establish contact with its creator.
As a fan of your Buckaroo Banzai reaction, it's nice to see you hitting these low key gems of the period. There's a surprising number of low and medium budget films that were truly original and sincere, but not smash hits, and Star Man is definitely in that category.
FYI: Life-Force is based on the novel by Colin Wilson which is science fiction mixed with phenomenology (compared to the book the movie---made a year AFTER this---is garbage).
THE TERMINATOR came out the same year as this, so any resemblance is coincidental. And the song you're trying to think of is "Tale it Easy" by THE EAGLES.
FYI "Route 66" (once known as America's Highway) passed right through there.
It's amazing to me how little young people know even though they have grown up with instant access to all the information on the planet .

The "gold record" is a laser disc. It was sold in the 80's like a DVD to play music and films.

He basically found one of the Voyager probes we sent out in 1977. We recorded sounds and images from Earth and how and where to find us. This is a great movie it was after Jeff did Tron in 1982. It's hard to believe that the Voyager Probes are still sending back data and that they have passed out into the interstellar space of the galaxy.
When the NASA guy first got down into the spacecraft, the gold record was in there.
The movie Starman was watching on TV was From Here to Eternity and I know it's kind of old school but anybody can change the TV channel with their hand.
To answer your question, I think the black and white movie they watched in the hotel was "From Here to Eternity."
Next underrated sci-fi movie suggestion: The Man Who Fell to Earth. It stars David Bowie. It's arguably not as popular as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, a movie inspired by his concept album of the same name.

I remember when I saw this in a theater it was mostly teenagers and people in they're 20's in the audience. But there were also two elderly women as well, who promptly got up and left once the baby started growing. I do wonder if they asked for their money back...

Timestamp 16:50 the scene where they're riding in the back of the truck Jen wondered where that location was. I'm 99% sure that is northern Arizona. I lived in the White Mountains of Az. as a kid in the 70s and am familiar with that area of the state. That looks like the Navajo reservation north of I-40. Possibly the Chinle area. I really liked this movie in the theater when it came out. Good to see it again in this video!

The records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them.
Interesting fact -- this gold record is what led the Psychlos to invade Earth (for gold) in Battlefield Earther. Do NOT watch the horrible film adapation. Read the book or listen to the audio version with Roddy McDowell as voice actor.
I last saw this film in the theater. The only thing I remember from it is "yellow means go very very fast".

This film was made iinto a TV seies. It's on Tubi. There are 20 something episodes, it only lasted one season. His son is now 14 years old and the series is all about the two of them trying to find Jenny Hayden. Robert Hayes plays Jeff Bridges part and does a pretty good job. I think it should have been a 2 or 3 part mini-series, rather than have it go a whole season.
I absolutely love this film.. Had such a crush on her still do.. Even though she's much older than I am .

Oh man. I had forgotten about this movie. My Mom took me to see this in the theater.
Google Voyager golden record. The record included, among other things, photos, animal sounds, greetings in 55 different languages, and music that included everything from Bach to Chuck Berry. There was a joke on SNL about NASA receiving a message from aliens that read "Send more Chuck Berry".
You would though wouldn't you? If you were an alien I mean, you'd want to hear more Chuck Berry.
Jeff Bridges was nominated for best actor for his performance in this film in 1984. When i was a teen in 1984, i thought John Carpenter would become as big as Spielberg or Lucas. He had such a very bad ass films. I didn`t knew must of his films wasn`t blockbusters like the ones of Spielberg or Lucas.
His films have extremely important messages tbough. Especially relatable to modern times, such as They Live.

Most of the reactors that I have watch will notice things that are s bit dated in older movies, but fortunately they don't take them out of the viewing experience. They focus on the story, which is often the intention of the people who made the movies.
