According to a few commenters, Caruana had a few opportunities to be a little more aggressive (holding on to the A file, not exchanging queens, piling up on the E5 pawn...)
Moves like that, that provoke h3 and later h4, are one of the things that first got me hooked on improving my understanding of this game, rather than just playing it. I remember reading a book by John Nunn: "Understanding Chess Move by Move" which had many illustrative games showing how a seemingly innocuous move opened up possibilities for all kinds of flashy fireworks displays later down the line (lots of tricky knights btw Jerry - right up your alley?). Even simple things like playing h3 a little early to prevent a pin against your knight (a pin which your opponent may never even have intended playing!), taking a defender away from the f6 square which is later made use of by your opponent in brutally sharp lines. Love it!
Thanks, Jerry. At 4:20 the explanation of why 11.Be3 is poor took me some time. The suggested line is 11. ... f5, so let's look at 12. exf. Notice that 12. ... gxf and 12. ... Rxf5 are both horrible, but in fact 12. ... e4 is the response that kills the idea.
07:56 evaluating the position: You may also argue that Black has two pawn islands and the Bishop on g7 is slightly hemmed in by e5 compared to White's Bishop but then again: What would be a meaningful life to White's Bishop? Black's is a great defender, and White's Bishop is free to move ... into the void of deep space ... maybe supporting the f4-pawn break. I don't know. It would take one hellova genius mind to call these "advantages" big enough to win.
Thank you for uploading these videos! I love them. What would make these videos even better? I'd like to see chess engine's evaluation on the left side of the board.

15. Ra5 (delaying Bd2) would have claimed the only open file for white instead leaving it contested. How wouldn't that have been a lot better rather than just "a tiny bit" better? Black would have had to worry about the pawn on b7.
I have been watching agadmator's videos lately and, while they offer good info, I find all the wise-assery around it to be really tiring. Wish you were churning out more content, mate. Cheers.
Hey Jerry. I've been watching your videos for about a year now and absolutely love them! Thank you so much, I have improved much as a player. I do have a question for you however. Sometimes you make a statement such as, "This is checkmate in 8". I'm rather surprised that in the 3 draws of this championship, at some point the engine couldn't see a forced solution for either side, even if many moves down the road. When you analyze a game do you look at every move and see if the computer spots a win? Have there been no forced wins in either of the 3 games of this championship so far (except for the blunder approaching move 40 in game 1)? If not than I am truly amazed at the computational complexities of chess even with simpler (relatively speaking) positions.
Computers are very good; but humans are also pretty good at this game. If both players play well enough its likely there is no forced win, thus the computer cant find it. Furthermore, each ply (1/2 move) that the computer has to calculate gets more and more complicated. Think of how many moves you could make, and then how many moves your opponent could respond with, etc. Calculating a forced mate with lots of pieces on board is very difficult and time consuming even for stockfish. Hope this answered the question, cheers :)
Such accuracy from both players, in the end this championship will be won by the player with enough guts to go for bolder lines of play. Despite rooting for Fabi, I think Magnus it's going to win this, especially if he keeps his end game interpretation at high level
greatwolf 42...Bd4?! Just leaves the bishop to die to the pawn and the pawns still have 3 squares to traverse first which gives the knight and king plenty of time to neutralize them, in fact it would give White the initiative with 43 Nd2 forcing either the White King to be allowed squares to work with or the Black King to risk the E pawn (which is now passed) to be unstoppable if the Black King moves too far Also the E pawn is can become connected and passed which would allow the knight to just sacrifice back and tie down the black king to them while white makes further progress on the kingside
Carlson gave up his Knight near the end there to gain some advantage, wouldn't it have been better to keep the knight on the board out of range of that bishop?
Both have done their homework. Leela like play from both players. This will be a championship of stamina and computer like attrition. Interesting, rather than exciting.
Caruana starting the same opening and Carlsen obliging? That's gotta take some guts from both players thinking after their break that they've found a better strategy over their opponent. But that's why they're the best!
Queening square of the only black pawn is white. This means black dark-squares bishop cannot kick the white king away from the queening square of that pawn. It would eventually end in stalemate where the white has no legal move as it is explained in the video.
I did evaluate that move, not that difficult to see the idea behind 15. Rxa5 Qxa5 16.Bd2 Qa7 17 Qa1 , just occupying the 'a' file. I am not saying that white would win, but at least he would have the initiative.
Chess question: what is the maximum number of white queens u can have on the board while still having a safe space for a black king? the white king is not on the board and u r not limited to 9 queens
I quickly set up a board to see if I could figure it out, and some preliminary testing leads me to believe the answer is thirty. Proof: lichess.org/analysis/standard/1qqqqqk1/1qqqq2q/1qqq2qq/1qq2qqq/1q2qqqq/3qqqqq/8/K7_w_-_-#0

Interesting to see that even tough the computer suggests only 1 inaccuracy from Carlsen, he is the one standing slightly better in the ending.
Especially considering he's Black in this game.
The definition of "inaccuracy" on lichess's analysis board is pretty arbitrary, it'll just be a threshold of centipawns lost on a single move.
