FLOWER EATING: You Know You Want To! Hello Swamp ROSE MALLOW (New Video Lesson)
This gorgeous perennial, scientifically called Hibiscus moscheutos, of the Malvaceae family, is an edible wildflower. It is soothing, mild and refreshing and can be eaten raw in salad. It is related to okra. Learn to ID, harvest, and use this beautiful food of the wild.
Qualities:
Swamp rose mallow is a soothing cooling plant that can be used as an emollient topically to soothe the skin or internally as a demulcent to soothe the mucous membranes. However I relate to this plant’s flower as a food. It is slimy-slippery like okra, and other mallows, containing good amounts of mucilage (not everyone is a fan). I do like it though.
Gather flowers when fully open. Eat the petals and discard the reproductive parts in the center to avoid potential allergenic reactions.
Habitat: Look for swamp rose mallow in rich, moist soil, in full sun, in brackish or salt marshes, freshwater swamps, wetland edges, ditches, and gardens.
Hardy from USDA Zones 4-9.
Range: Native of Eastern North America: SE. Canada to Central & E. U.S.A. Introduced to parts of Europe and Asia.
Dimensions: Height: 4-7 ft.; Width 3-4 ft.

I have a dark fashion pink 💗 one that's blooming now in NH. I never thought of eating it. I have bought dried hibiscus & made a pretty reddish tea.
Hello Ericka, your pink one sounds lovely. The red dried hibiscus sold on the herb market is a relative of swamp rose mallow, but a different species. Swamp rose mallow is scientifically called Hibiscus moscheutos and the sour red one is Hibiscus sabdariffa.
I have 2 very large crimson eyed rose mallow plants and I love them! They are in bloom now. Can I dry the flowers and leaves for tea?
Hello Maxwellsmama, I typically eat these flowers raw, but I don't see why you couldn't dry them and use them for tea. Sounds lovely. I have not eaten the leaves, although I imagine they are edible. Keep us posted on what you do with yours. Thanks!
Enjoyed this!! Can tea be .made from flower?
Thanks, Rhonda, for your comment. Yes, you can make tea from these flowers too.
I had a facial cream once with mallow. It was amazing. No longer made.
Yes, sounds lovely. I wonder who made it... company?
So sorry for late response. I don’t look at this email thread til now. That cream was from Burt’s Bees. Long discontinued. Long before B B was bought out.
👍
Thanks!
Can you substitute the marshmallow plant?
Yes, you can eat marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) flowers too!
Thankyou.for these videos!!
Weclome!
If you crush the flowers and rub into tour hands they will be as soft as a baby’s skin
Nice, thanks for your comment.
