If you go that way, Mario appears in Zelda Ocarina of Time (Remember the pictures by the window in Hyrule Castle Garden), tho I can't really imagine Mario being part of Zelda's universe or vice-versa. Those are simply a wink to the fans, not things to consider as part of the same universe per say, at least, in my opinion.
