Fitted carpets for years and that's a decent job. Just doing mine now, dropped the tools a few years back but if it comes out that good I'll be happy. I'd have done the bottom step different but then, every other pro would have their own preference. Top work.
I've done a few stair carpets but I'm going to do my first runner tomorrow. I've picked up a good tip from you which is where to put the gripper rod (I've tended to put it too close to the riser in the past), also cutting the corners of the underlay and using something to ensure that creep doesn't happen as you work your way down are good tips. I'm going for the waterfall method this time as I like the simpler look and it will save tacking everything up under the nosings so should be a quicker job (hopefully!). Thanks for a very helpful video, pitched just right for someone who may not be a DIY expert but is willing to have a go at most things.

Love how this has turned out! I’ve seen a few comments saying that it would look good with the metal rods but I like it’s simplicity as it is! Just hope your fingers survived the deadly carpet gripper! I always shed blood when taking that stuff up! Cheers, marc.
A carpet fitter i was a fitters mate for (very good one at that) used to run his bolster over the grippers when it was finished and fitted, it bends the nails on the gripper rods slightly holding it better. :)

Been binge watching stair carpet fitting videos and yours is the only one where your not using those air staple guns. Is it more difficult without one and could you do use method where you wrap the carpet under the tread nose? Thanks. Great video by the way!

Great stuff - your stairs very similar ours but was gob smacked to see your tiles at the bottom -colour and pattern etc identical to ours - - - - - this has given me confidence I needed as Im just about to do mine for first time -so thank you for sharing ,and great job !

Hi, When I had the house re-carpeted I left it all to the pro's but I did watch them and my stairs have the same bend at the bottom, the pro's cut each tread all the way down and they said it made the job a lot easier. I do like the carpets and I am so glad that I got it all fitted as they had all the specialised tools that made it easier to do.
The easier way is very seldom the right way but as long as you are happy with the job

It’s not easy but your numerous tips helped a great deal. Especially the one about cutting the underlay at the edges on the lip of the step because it gives a very neat edge around the curve. Your little Co stars are adorable too!

Great job on the carpet runner but couldn’t help laughing at 1:55 when the girls were riding the carpet roll and your face. My girls did the same with our carpet roll for the living room. At 2:17 when you were using your measuring tape on the staircase I caught myself saying out loud “go get your wife’s cloth measuring tape from her sewing kit” I figured that out doing a few DIY weird measuring projects

Love your videos. Thank you for the work you put into to them. How much narrower would the runner have to be to avoid the curve in the bottom steps? Just to narrow to be useful? Also, have you considered just painting the bottom riser completely white instead of putting carpet on it? Great Video!

Loving the videos. Have a 1880 house so going to be facing similar issues. Little tip as saw you bending the tape measure round the edges, get some string, belt anything flexible and use that make a mark at the start and end then measure it 😎
It was just a rough measurement, otehrwise I would have raided Jo's sewing box for her tape! String works well for measuring the length of runner needed too if you don't trust your maths. :-)

I have them on my old house stairs. I chose the stainless Steel type. They look good.
Brilliant job.
An inch long, round headed, wire nail tight into the stair crotch either side of the gripper will keep the sides tight where the gripper is not as wide as the runner.. Also, rather than measuring the middle of every gripper and every stair, just do one. Then position the gripper and cut a piece if gripper the length of the gap between the lhs of your positioned gripper and the left stringer. This piece of gripper can the be used in each stair, butted to the the stringer ,to give to butt the gripper against to ensure its centralised as per the on you measured.
Some people thinking of attempting some of the trickier DIY jobs would do well to bear in mind that you are far more skilled than your typical DIY,we. 👍😠

Fantastic work! Looking at the front of that first step, I’d also consider just painting it white to see if you like the look. It allows you to mop that entryway and not worry about getting the runner wet. If you end up not liking the white, put the runner segment on. Something to consider. :)
We had thought that, or a colour match to the darker grey.

No stretching? They look good from my house. Probably old news now. Being a little off here or there is OK. It's fabric. Pad top to bottom, carpet bottom to top.

because of the bashing and potential creaking I got mine fitted 'American style' with no grippers and underlay. Its glued and tacked. Prob wont last as long buy no risk of damage to my old stairs.
It is worth considering. No one likes a creaky stair case!
Do you have to use underlay?
When you did that bottom step, the last bit of carpet i would have cut but leave that right hand binding intact, fit the riser part, then shape the tread to fit the curve, the result is a continuous binding on that curved side, the binding on the other side won't be seen as much.
To get a tight runner, i would have knealt on the slack so it was a little tighter, so when you hammer the corner downwards it would apply a bit more tension.

You should always take the underlay gripper to gripper, you will get heel to toe wear! You will have a hole very soon on the riser.
Yes definitely take underlay from gripper to gripper you can always put one tack just under the lip of each step to hold the edge of the carpet tight down the riser. But not a bad job for first attempt 👍

Never do the underlay how he did it. Always brings underlay down to the gripper on the risers. Cut sides out so not visible from sides but if underlay isnt run all the way to the gripper the carpet will start to shred its pile where peoples heels catch it

all advice says leave at LEAST 100mm on either side of the runner
So with a standard size runner which seems to be 650mm wide, that would mean your steps should be 850mm wide
My steps are only 750mm wide 🤷🏻♂️
SO, if I lay a 650mm runner down, I will only have a lowsy 50mm space on either side of my runner ! 🤦🏻♂️
Where you have 90mm on both sides of yours.
Why dont carpet stores sell narrower runners??? The narrowest I’ve come across is 570mm but is not the style runner I need

You need to get yourself a carpet kicker and kick them into the rack strip
Yes been over them with a kicker now. I guess it is needed more if you are laying from the bottom up, but did seem to tighten it up a little more.
The Restoration Couple bottom to the top is the only way you can properly stretch it. Other wise when the carpet softens. It is going to loosen and fall off the tack strip
What type of carpet & underlay was used?
Axminster carpet and cloud 9 underlay.

It is usually but the runners are made up by a company and work out quite a bit less than regular whole room carpet.
You should fit the underlay full step and riser, but cut the edge the same you have, but and inch in go straight down
At 13.15 where the issue of curve is. could have added a piece of wood to make the curve start at edge of runner instead

Next time start at the bottom. It does a much better job. Also use a carpet stapler to fasten the carpet in the crease so that it does not come loose.

Well buddy let me explain a few things to you about laying carpet on stairs your video is good but I'll give you a few pointers when you put your your tack strips down under the rug and you put your batting under the rug you seem to forget one thing. The way you laid the rug was called a waterfall effect. That's good and it looks nice but you didn't staple the rug under the top stair tread that's what's going to make are stair treads come loose and time don't just rely on your carpet stair treads.

Welcoming to the uk the traditional way of carpeting no electric stapler, been fitting this way for decades no problems
Only bit of advice start from bottom leave 6”carpet folded under the riser on bottom stair, which will allow you to shift the stairs in a year or so to extend the life of the carpet
please guys never do that .. first point wrong how u can use nails on stairs u have to use staples gun and why u put tackles when u walk u gonna feel the nails other thing never do ur stair 2 Hollywood and the rest waterfall that looks funny if u make ur stairs like this in a few weeks the carpet gonna be loose i install carpet from homedeepot i got 15 years doing carpet

Been fitting carpets since 1985 if fitted correctly they don’t stretch fitting it this way looks a lot better and you have the option of shifting the stairs if they start to show signs of wear on the nosing.
