Bill Murray version was a life changing movie for me. I have this version on DVD and the book read many times.

Read this book...twice...when I was 13. It helped guide me to avoid the trappings of materialism and the lifestyle it takes...
It took decades and daily sessions of...mindfulness...but made progress.
It's a goal one can never attain...but the joy is in the attempt.
    Life becomes...very different.

This popped up in my feed, so for what it's worth...
I've not seen any more of this movie than this scene nor have i read the book, but I think I'll still take the version of this movie starring Bill Murray...yep, Bill Murray. The way he plays it and the way the story is told carries more of the darkness and emptiness that drives a journey like this. I highly recommend it.

    LOVING ALL
    What if I accepted everything
    And treated it with love
    Even the darkest moments
The ones that no one would
What affect would it have on me
Would I see with brand new eyes
    Would life appear much different
Would it make me weak or wise
Or would it make me foolish
To see with eyes of love?
    Especially in dark places
    Devoid of light or love
For there is such darkness in this world
    Where I would only light
And much as I would hope
And dream and wish with all my might
I know I cannot change its shape
But dream what it might be
    Accepting all my landscape
    And loving all I see

Ever learning but never able to come to the truth.Jesus CHRIST is the truth and only true way.You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. The path is wide that leads to destruction and narrow that leads to life everlasting. Oh blood and water that gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us I trust in you. For the sake of his sorrowful passion have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen.

"We Indians believe there are three paths that lead to the gun." I turned on captions because I was having trouble hearing everything the Holy Man was saying, and wow was a lot of the captioning so wrong. If someone deaf tried to watch this, they'd sure get a weird impression of what's being discussed. Unfortunately, I am missing some of the dialogue because the sound is kind of muffled, but I get the overall idea. I saw this movie quite a long time ago, and was watching this because I just learned it is one of the first movies my favorite actor, Terrence Stamp, saw.

I'm in the midst of reading the Razor's Edge right now It's my second time reading it. The last time was back in 1989. I had forgotten so much of the details. And that's what disappoints me about this movie version. While I still love it, and own it, the scenes with the holy man and that of being in India fall flat. The screenwriting completely left out what exactly Larry had done while in India and elsewhere. So all you get are just grand generalizations about the search for purpose. Larrry's character learned a great deal about Indian culture, read books like the Principles of Psychology. And this screenplay omits all of it. Leaving you wondering what exactly did Larry learn from his sojourn? I still love the movie but don't like how deliberate the script was in making Larry as boring as he comes across.

+Byron Gordon Odd, I found the scenes with the holy man the very height of fullness. Perhaps it may be because I was/am Larry in his searching and understand him only too well. I've never gotten over this scene. It was like looking in a mirror the first time I saw this. Watch again Byron ...

I think what you are reacting to is the doubt and questions that Larry is experiencing. That I understand and that is meaningful and the film portrays Larry's angst and despair very well. What the movie does less well is actually show examples of what it is Larry has learned while in India. If you read the novel, you know that the "optional" chapter one can read is all about his sojourn into India and what he learned about Brahmanism. It's quite fascinating and the movie omits everything from that, not even one example from Indian culture that is portrayed in this film. So, I'm glad you got something from Larry's portrayal but I just think if the screenwriter had been more daring, he actually could have inserted some real - life Hindu philosophy and practice instead of just the very generalized and sanitized picture we get from this movie. Just my two cents.

@@LordGreystoke I think the movie is a product of its time. Very few mainstream movies like this got very deep. In fact, for a movie of its time, it's actually unusual in terms of questioning Western culture and expectations of men and the Christian concept of God. I haven't read the book, though I think I probably will now, but I'm sure there's a lot more to the story. Kind of like Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," whichin the movie ends up being mostly about a crazy, obsessed guy chasing down a "bad" whale, while the book is is about many ideas and makes many comments on how people treat each other.

Jesus can give you what you are looking for in 2 seconds...His sacrifice of himself to pay for our sins...bridged the gap between God and man...he made it so the simple person can find Him...simple trust in His sacrifice allows us to have direct communion with God...we trade our sinfulness for Jesus's purity and then we are acceptable to God...and can commune with God...2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him....this is a great thing and God made it simple so that all could find Him...John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
