A don't understand why this film isn't higher in the rating of flixter and rotten 🍅. A thought it showed a good real insight into what its like being in a classroom in new York and L.A & all the situations surrounding the story outside of school, i thought it was a really good film, Cesar was a right evil wee bastard!
i picked up on that too. especially at the end scene where caesar says macho is all he has. he even says "no!" before mr g takes his turn. i think in a way he didn't want him to die. that was like his only father figure in his life.
Although i did a bit of time, im glad i picked up a book eventually. Football helped me get out with the right people encouraging me and with family. Now im 40 with 2 kids and a wife 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
3:40-3:45 was a critical window to build rapport with Cesar. He wasn’t acting rebellious, he made a joke connected to the lesson, the class laughed and so did the teacher. That’s a split second of the guard being down. I’d have wished that he spoke to Cesar after class to correct the behavior, affirm the good he saw, set an expectations but clarify that he’d give him tomorrow to get it right.
I would hate to have all my Passion and Confidence taking away by a Low Life then when Recovering Live in Fear barely able to Show Class or so, Don’t know How to explain it all in Right Words but Pretty Sure Y’all get my Point
Was exactly like this in middle school and high school in the late 90s and early 2000s. Depictions of the vatos were spot on and realistic to the homies I went to school with. One reason I really liked this movie. Teachers had it hard and students had it harder around that lifestyle.
In my side of edmonton I grew up with people like Cesar and Benny. I'm 22 now and a father of a 5 year old, those people I know. Last of em just passed away from an overdose 2 weeks ago. I've been stabbed 3 times and overdosed once on New year's when the new star wars was getting big. Been clean 3 1/2 to 4 years now.its really been a trip but movies like this are great. none ever listens to a young guy like me but Mr Jackson. Hell yeah.
maybe i misunderstood the scene.. but garfield started the war (or in my mind he threw gasoline on the fire) cuz he was told previously this scene that cesar was special ed..and asking him to read humiliated him showing he wasn't so macho in front of his homies.. garfield isn't naive.. but maybe he was trying to help.. i think he was drawing blood though out of frustration
kimmyfreak200 Your right. that’s the “hidden” message is to choose your battles wisely and Garfield didn’t, which why the white lady teach began to disassociate with him after she found he was fucking with KOS
Ceaser was always high Garfield put him in the front of the class made him pay attention and brought something he knew that would interest he back of the class (the homies ) you seen everyone was huddled around the cage before they where separated calling each other names but now like regular students but Garfield didn’t expect his watch to be stolen I believe that is what started it the watch being stolen not him being humiliated from not being about to read
I think that is exactly what Garfield wanted to do. Something I only saw when I saw the movie a third time, there is a short scene before that says Benny has been absent for four days. Garfield started the war probably the same night the female teacher told him she was threatened by him constantly. And he probably made Cesar read knowing it would humiliate him. At the end of the movie, he admits that what he did was because that's the only language they understand. And I think it's also the point of the movie, to discover how far Garfield fell after being stabbed, he became more like Cesar, but was still trying to teach him in his last moments. And Cesar did not understand the lesson and died "for stupidity".
I always use this movie as an example of how Samuel l Jackson can change his roles, he’s most famous for playing loud mouths/over the top characters, but in this movie he plays a believable quiet mild mannered guy who just wants to teach and not be messed with
I keep remembering when school was super bad 1999 when I was 13 in Oakland California I came from Mexico I started high school at that time gang members they were shot every day it was horrible. 10 times worse than now.now they dress like girls guys from high school

Classic movie. I know it beginning to end. Watched it more than 💯 times
Funny how people act tough until you see that deep down they're just insecure.
If people were secure, then they wouldn't need to act tough.
exactly.

Sammy J is the man!
You can clearly see his disgust at 3:03
