An unexpectedly interesting and well-produced serial! A bit of trivia worth mentioning: In the boat scene in Chapter 7, I noticed that both boats were sprayed with water over the bow and onto the windshield, but all of the men were quite dry. Considering how smooth the water on the lake is in the scene, it seems likely the spray on the boat is simply stage effects used to give the impression the boats are actually on water, instead of positioned in front of a rear projection.
This was Lionel Atwill's final film -- he passed away before filming was completed, and a stand-in was used for some of his remaining scenes. RIP Lionel Atwill: film's greatest mad doctor of all time!
these old serials held audiences glued to their seats. Plus, they were family friendly. some fighting - but said fighting was part of the series. You knew the hero and heroine would escape the trap.
These cliff hangers , ere in the saturday matinee , for children , when i was a pre-schooler , and had these to get us back , along with the cartoons , the movie tone news reel & the main feature . Wasnt to bad a show , for a small rural town hall come cinema & live theater , when needed .
A great and a pretty darn good screenplay! Character personalities and development were done quite well. I recall a development staffer for the premiering TV show "Deep Space 9 described it as Casablanca [w/o Nazis], that these people occupying the station had differing goals and motivation, and that causes conflict which leads to good story telling. And, WOW, did the cast of characters in *this* serial sure have differing motivations and conflicts! Is the female ruler going to side with the good guys or bad guys? Or change like the wind? What's up with the "most evil" war criminal and the man who actually controls *him*? Even the fellow "working out a perfect gambling strategy" who, we see, clearly isn't an adequate mathematician to the [inherently] losing prospect but can so easily be bought off with a "loan" to feed his gambling addiction? This is surely an underrated gem of exploring ordinary emotions within the framing of a cliffhanger. BRAVO to the writers!
Ahhh! The 1940s, when people believed that war could be "outlawed". But then, only the '40s and '50s could produce propandistic dreck this boring. Poor Key Luke, he deserved better. Oh, well.

This was a fun one. And we got the added pleasure of Lionel Atwill (in his last performance since he died while filming) and the great Keye Luke.
Love the way they used models in those days for the crashes.

Thank you for preserving history. I grew up watching Matinee at The Bijou.
This is the crispest film serial print I've ever seen.
Danke sehr! 😘
