No matter how large my collection gets, Venus flytraps remain my favorite species. Their alien appearance and behavior is endlessly fascinating. It's striking when you realize a trap is essentially becoming a stomach when it seals for digestion. What a plant!

I have 3 bogs that I cover with pine needles early December and uncover early April. We had a winter in '14 that was minus 20 degrees F wind chill for about 2 weeks and everything survived. Although mine appear to be quite healthy, in comparison, mine have a longer stem than yours; 2 inchs+ long. Is that due to lack of light? Also mine does have slight red coloration but not as "blood" red as yours. Each VFT has about 7 large traps (1.25 inch+) and many new babies are popping up in the middle, too. But these new babies do not become large traps! They become the tiniest traps! Smaller than the pinky nail. Would you know why?

Hi, I was just thinking of getting one of these myself but I just want to make sure: how long should I have to wait to feed them after travel? Is it okay to feed it right after? How often should I feed fly traps, and should I feed all of them at once?

I live in Las Vegas and I got my VFT at our local grocer. It came in a plastic cylinder. Do you suggest repotting it? And will it be OK in our extreme heat on the patio?

In June 2012 I have bought me a meat eating plant and named it Gleipnir, so I don't have to do anything special for Gleipnir, but I do have to give it distilled water every ten days. My first meat eating plant is still alive, but I have bought a grow light for my meat eating plant and put it above my predatory plant a month later. I put my meat eating plant to sleep from May to August, and I slowly increase its lighting every three weeks. My meat eating frog eating plant will live for over twenty years since they don't have any life expectancy for plants, but for my meat-eating plant Gleipnir, it's a pretty good thing

i just got a cheap one from walmart for $5 the one store let them all die which was really sad the other one had a bunch of half decent ones. Do I need to worry about it being in direct sun with extreme heat of Memphis, should I shade it at the peak of Summer? I have so many other plants that struggle when it is July and August 95 degrees plus.

I have a fly problem and was maybe thinking of getting some vft to help. Do vft attract insects? Or does it always have to be a swatted fly or be manually fed?

So you say about the being a chitinous digestive stuff, so does this mean that things like isopods pill/ball bugs would actually be a good choice for food?
Id have worried the shell would stopped the juice getting to the insides and made it harder but if they are actually an ideal choice and their exoskeletons are activily targeted and broken down then i might have to steal abit of bark from the wood pile and introduce some wondering food.

I hope you can answer my question. I found a pincher bug, I have them everywhere, and I caught it, cut the pincher and lower half of its body. It’s legs we’re moving and head. It was still alive. I gave it to my Venus. Is that okay? Will it be able to digest that? Can the pincher bug hurt my fly trap? I have mud dopplers, yellow fly jackets, jumping spiders water beetles, Rollie pollies, ants and bees. What bug is not okay for them. Lady bugs?

One thing I'll say is don't go crazy and feed all the traps at once because it takes a lot of energy for the plant to digest and if you feed it too much the heads will die.
