    When I was a kid my parents took us to Myrtle Beach for vacation.... along the way we had a flat tire. We all got out and waited for my dad to change it.... I was wondering
    around on the side of the road that was near a field.... as I was walking around I realized there were hundreds and hundreds of these things growing in this field
    next to the road. The ground was spongy and there were mounds of moss. The plants were growing among tall weeds... I was floored by how many there were. I
    also noticed there were many sundews all around that were bright red and about the size of a quarter... there were so many you could hardly walk without stepping on
    them.
    This happened back in the 70's. Years later I went back to Myrtle Beach for a vacation and tried to find the spot (I knew it was near Conway, SC).... but for the most part
    the area had been developed into a golf course.... I was never able to find the spot and I doubt it even exist anymore.

      dont you love it, the government jails or fines you if you take some from the wild, however its ok for someone to lay a suitcase of $$$ on the table to develop a golf course. Same is true with the marijuana push in the states. It was a horrible offense if caught selling or growing, and having a felony charge slapped on you, however down the road the same state that jailed you and wrecked your life determines its ok to sell due to the revenue it will receive......

    Here's a tip: If you want the plant to conserve its energy, you cut off the flower stalk as soon as it becomes visible, because flowering wears the plant out if it doesnt get fed.

    The flower stalks have evolved to be so long so that the flowers can stay above the water line. Otherwise pollinators can't make it to the flower. Once seeds develop, they need to dry out to fully mature or else they'll mold as well.

    In Florida, having a vft in those boggy pots will definitely attract mosquitoes 🦟. And probably a bunch of other critters. So it may be a benefit to the plant, But it can backfire since they won't catch all the insects , especially fireants, bees, wasps etc. Would there be a better predatory plant for Hot humid South Florida with dry , sandy ,rocky soil? Replace the native soil with the type they need.

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any video can't discuss challenges of growing VFTs in every location. All it can do is provide general guidelines. It's up to you as the owner of the plants, to find what works in your region or micro-climate.
      Eg, many people are confused by how much sun or water a plant needs. That's because there is the general guidelines, and then there are the guidelines that works for some people in some area .
      Watering 2-3x a week isn't going to work as well as having a pot sit in a tray, if they weather or sun is really hot. And saying it can be in full sun in Wisconsin summer is different from full sun in Florida summer or in Arizona summer.

    I live in Arizona where it can be hot for almost 3/4 of the year. I love VFTs but have not had the success that I hope for. My plant lives inside, in a terrarium, and is given distilled water, yet no traps grow. The growth is only long stems that crowd the terrarium. Please instruct me, if you will because I don't know what I need to do to help it thrive. I would truly appreciate your feedback.

      What type of soil is it in? Potting soil is bad for carnivorous plants so I’d use spaghnum moss or peat moss

    What depth of pot do you recommend for vfts? People seem to recommend deep (5" or more) pots, but yours seem to all be doing fine with shorter pots.

    Any advice for growing in the desert (Las Vegas)? We don't really have a normal winter and it's a regular 100-115⁰ for 6 mo out of the year and then drops only to maybe 40⁰ for a short winter.

    Just got mine. I keep getting conflicting about sun light! I left mine in the sun for one day because it said they need sun but then he started brown. So I kept him out of the sun the next day. I think I will give him sun for about 4 hours a day and see what that does.

    Question: I have aquariums and a solution that dechlorinates the tap water, and removes hard/heavy metals. If I added that to the water for my fly traps would tap water then be ok? Cause it makes the water less hard, so I'd think that would work?

      @@Tatusiek_1 Thank you. And one question popped up just now. I had a vivarium set up before, builded by my fiancee, only plants, no animals. We want to build a new one, but with some Venus fly traps. Do you think a fly trap would enjoy being housed with some other plats in a vivarium?

    • @Tatusiek_1
      @Tatusiek_1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HawkTear If the plants overgrow the VFT they will block out its light. Also remember, VFTs need a dormancy, I don’t know if you chill your vivarium in the cold months, but it would be necessary for them to survive. They grow best outside where they can naturally catch critters and experience the seasons, while they do enjoy humidity, it is not necessary as long as they are moist. If your climate is not suited for their wintering then tell me your agricultural zone.

    • @Tatusiek_1

      @@HawkTear Also in your vivarium, what kind of media and water do you use? If there is no drainage in the vivarium, they can die from nutrient burns.

    • @HawkTear
      @HawkTear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tatusiek_1 I live in Sweden, so we have cold winters. And we never used heating sources for the old vivarium. Just room temprature. For media we had in the bottom a filtration of hardened clay aggregate, like pepples, a layer of that up to 5 cm, then we covered that with a cloth made for plantation, then soil for plants mixed with plantationsoil for terrariums, around 40 cm.

      Absolutely not, do NOT use sand from the beech. It has way too much contaminates and salt, even if you wash it the sand may continue leeching. Use quartz/silica sand or pool filter sand that is coarse grit.
