    Hi GRRRLTraveler, Love all your videos about India, my husband and I are in our 70's and are from Australia and India is our 'only' holiday destination and has been for the past 33 years. We can't get enough of India. You tell it how it is and that is helpful to would be tourists. We go to India twice a year and we love Kolkata and Rajasthan the best. We have travelled north, south, east and west. staying in cheap to moderate hotels and we always have fun. Go with an open mind and come back with heaps of good memories. Australia is so boring after India which is full of excitement.

    India is a hugely populated country . And Kolkata is a METROPOLITAN CITY . Every places of Kolkata is very congested and huge crowded. If you go to Tangra you can see there Chinese colony . Most of the Hakka Chinese group live there. You should know that Kolkata was the first colonial capital of India under British bondage. So Kolkata is always populated.

    Honking is kind of odd for foreigners in this part of the world. All the honking you hear isn't people just making unnecessary noise, but rather the honking is a sign of drivers on the road conversing and communicating. People there use their horns to tell other people where they are or what they're doing.

  • @bongintoronto692
    @bongintoronto692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I was born here and stayed for 27 glorious years of my life..Then moved to Toronto.. I miss being in Kolkata. They call it the "city of joy". I know all the streets like the back of my hand. You started your video from Chadni Chowk which is also the electronics market for aftermarket parts, then you moved to Gariahat where the shopping for fashionable clothes take place , I also saw the Park Street crossing,where those food stalls were, which is also one of most famous places, that has a cemetery that was made by the British, the last burial took place in 1800s. I dont believe in ghosts but I was possessed while I tried breaking some rules of that place...lol
    And for the nails..Actually I never thought about it. I always thought it was normal. Now that I realize I dont have them I know you are sepaking the truth.. Loved it

  • @dchowdhary5836
    @dchowdhary5836 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Christine not sure if it was intentional, but you visited all the market places which usually are crowded. You can't generalize a city's culture visiting only a small part of it. Next time you visit Kolkata (Calcutta) please do a little research and visit places which are not so disturbing. Kolkata (Calcutta) is known as the Cultural Capital of India and trust me there are reasons for it. Nowhere in the world, you would see people of vivid nature and varied caste & culture live in perfect harmony as we do in Kolkata. Visit Belur Math the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. People from all over the world, irrespective of the religion that they believe in, visit this temple to enjoy the tranquillity and serenity of this holy place. Visit Princep Ghat, one of Kolkata's earliest recreational spots and a photographer’s paradise. Resting on the banks of the beautiful river Hooghly, this place is adorned with lush trees and expanse of green lawns. Visit Park Street, the party street or recreation zone of Kolkata with N number of restaurants, hotels, discos, and pubs. Take a sneak peek into the history of this place and know how it became one of the most happening places of British Calcutta.
    When we say Calcutta is the City of Joy, we mean it. Please refer to the website below and you would find plenty of places that may attract you and make your trip more memorable next time.

      Old Calcutta needs to be demolished as it is too old, more that 250 years, houses are about to fall down, very poor people from other states and very poor Bengalis, a lot of them are illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, live there somehow; they take bath on the streets, this is the standard scenes from City of Joy or Luis Malle films, but this is not the reality. I was there for my university days; we lived differently.

    • @DipakBose-bq1vv

      These areas are too old, most houses are practically falling down. in any other country, these areas would be demolished long ago.

    • @foodieexpress9349
      @foodieexpress9349 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dipak Basu You are definitely out of your mind. Because these areas are a part of the main cosmopolitan areas of the city. All the main schools and colleges lie in central Kolkata. If something has to be done, it's renovation, which IS happening. Also, this city is developing real fast, if you're talking about "demolishing" central Kolkata, you're talking about snatching it's soul from it, illogical as anything.

    You've completely captured the beautiful poetry that is the hectic chaos of Kolkata. I stayed at Hotel Maria on Sudder St. for 12 days back in 2007; the general area looks the same. Los Angeles is soo quiet in comparison lol !!! The biggest culture shock for me was the mounds of rubbish piled to shoulder height with smiling barefoot children playing/scavenging through it. Oh and navigating by various putrid odors from block to block. As a "backpacker" I never saw this gleaming "new Kolkata" (those gated massive modern complexes and NRI housing developments) affluent Indians speak of i'm sure it is very nice but what I did see: the Howrah bridge, Victoria Memorial, a cow on the runway at (CCU) Airport, both major rail stations, the zoo, several museums, mother house, beggars & touts... sure sure. I am aware that comparing a city of something like 8 million to the surroundings of the Chowringhee area is like comparing the whole of Los Angeles County to corner 8th Ave & Slauson in South Central obviously the area doesn't represent the entire population ... yup you can still see the Hollywood sign from there (on a clear day) the is soo much more... oh yeah the POLLUTION in INDIA is crazy. I've called Southern California home my whole life and was told (in school) growing up we have the worst pollution IN THE WORLD and that's just not true. I've never come home from a casual stroll with black boogers and soot on my face. Delhi & Kathmandu were just as bad ... Goa or Darjeeling not so much but they still burn rubbish everywhere; so anywhere one might walk there very well could a flaming heap of noxious refuse. A word of advice for any apprehensious travelers looking to ease into the culture shock don't land in Delhi or Kolkata (cheapest I know). Try Chennai or Hyderabad maybe even Bengaluru they're relatively easier to navigate with far less of the initial jarring commotion (although compared to the west; India pretty much anywhere that is developed hustles and bustles 24/7 ). Dive in though there's nothing like feeling ALIVE. Keep up the great work & safe travels

      You have missed the real Calcutta of Southern part of it, New town, salt lake, these are now real calcutta, because in the old areas very few people are local, they are either from the western parts of India or Chinese or Muslims.

      Amitava Deb you know what why kolkata was dirtiest because there has no BJP government... If kolkata has a BJP government then every paid media make a headline that KOLKATA is the most beautiful city in India. Unfortunately recently Tripura won this title.

    Is that a gay couple around the 1:18 mark? I could swear it looks like they were holding hands at the beginning. I just was shocked as I didn't think that was something that was accepted there.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joshua Morgan haha. It's not accepted there; it's an odd cultural difference. It's not to be taken as a sexual relation but affectionate/brotherly type. Oddly, showing affection between a man and woman is less tolerated than between two men. India, Nepal, Korea, and other Asian countries,..etc... you'll see young men walking in the streets holding hands. It's considered normal.

    • @mynameisjosh83
      @mynameisjosh83 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Ha! Well I wasn't even close then :P... That's neat though... I knew it was socially acceptable in Europe, but had no idea that parts of Asia didn't look at it as taboo as well. It's unfortunate that the US has stigmatized this so bad that as soon as two guys do anything like that, they are instantly labeled gay.

    Hey Christine kaaloa your video on 5travel tips for india was sad one as it portraits mostly one side of the coin.Plzz try show positive sides too.Namaste and peace out.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I try my best to show as many sides of the coin that a traveler will experience-- I try my best to be unbiased (even though I am very biased and am pointedly trying to encourage travelers to go to India, because I love your country). I do videos to 'promote' my destinations to western audiences and mindsets, but this is not a glamorous tourism video. It is a travel survival channel, where I prepare westerners for what they might encounter (good and bad), which I know they will have difficulty with (because I once did) and often its answering questions that readers have asked me about a place. If the coin appears negative to travelers, I show people that it can be done by* a woman, alone... on a budget*.
      I understand there are Indians do not like this way of storytelling, but this is MY perspective and TH-cam channel. Some may consider it a tarnish of their image. To those Indians, I politely say-- go make your own video of your city and make it the one you want to see and share with your audiences. My channel has it's own goal.
      This video is actually what I loved about Kolkata and what I think westerners will like too.

    • @vikastiwari8549
      @vikastiwari8549 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not saying that you intended to do that but i thought your that video was showing mostly negative points only and also if you have face any problem in your trip to India then i want to say sorry from bottom of my heart .

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I have encountered any problems in India, it hasn't kept me from returning. This is my 3rd trip of which I've stayed anywhere from two weeks to 3 months per trip.

    • @RipanDutta1992
      @RipanDutta1992 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why are you even bothered with that? its her channel and she is entitled to put whatever she wants in there..Its their way to get more views,they will never show the beautiful places and they wouldn't even want to put those places on videos on their channel..for example,I am from darjeeling and I am sure they will never put my places on their bucket list,for obvious reasons.
      People see what they want to see

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Darjeeling is in my video queue. But I am a Eurasian American born female... our perspective of bucket list things to do, undoubtedly will be different.
