Open handed is the best technique I believe. Allows for way more creativity, and seeing/feeling the kit in a more wholistic (is that a word?) manner. Separating the mind into quadrants that allows optimal limb independence and assimilation of Groove! Lefty openhanded player too, but setup as lefty.
