I am going to try the Crispus next year, for the lasr two years I have tried herritage varieties and they are just not working here. Hi Terry, those Brussels look great mate, I know what you having on your xmas dinner plate. You wanna build some sort of wood burner in your polly tunnel. Cheers mate, take care and be safe.
Pondering on a hot bed or fire, but its keeping the fire going and may resort to using a Chinese heater in the future. Brussels are going down a treat. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
Hello Terry, just catching up after a break. With the curved kerbs, would it work for you by alternating the curves, one way then the other way. Crispus look good, second year I have grown them although they were slow taking off. When you ask the wife to hit the nail...........remember to tell her not the ones attached to your fingers and thumb! 😊 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I was thinking the same with the kerbs Nigel, but ether way most of the kerb will be buried. Really pleased with the sprouts, but the other club root resistance brassicas that I bought with them didn't do very well, did get one good cauliflower though. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
Just in my first year of allotmenteering! Loving it! So addictive. Am also vlogging it and also on TikTok, as I get loads of tips and advice! Found you when I searched for brussels. Not sure what to do or how to look after mine at the moment. Think it looks like I need to chop all the leaves off?
@peterandsarah_doing_lifePlot37 you do need to wait until your sprouts get to a good size before removing the lower leaves, once fully grown you can then take the tops out to stop the sprouts blowing. Welcome and I have subscribed.
Yep. Garden envy everytime I watch. 😂 one day I'll get there. This year is my first year growing sprouts. And I have now clue what I am doing. Plus side is I haven't killed them yet. So maybe there's a chance I will get something from them.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening I was very lucky my first two years I just put them in and forgot about them and they loved it and where huge so I thought that's great every year I'll have amazing sprouts lol
The fire place is amazing, be great to cook some bacon on that. Love your sprouts, they look great. Hoping mine will put some growth on, they very small sprouts. Do u have any tips on growing sprouts. Lastly I have a question about compost, is it a good idea to put some guttering in the middle of the pile, with holes in to give the compost pile more air. Would this help to make the compost break down quicker?
Hello Mark, I prefer cold Composting with worms, they create the holes for the Compost to breath and each March I harvest it and its marvellous material. Take the tops out Mark on a few to see if it makes a difference for you. Keeping warm in front of the fire Mark when it's not raining.......lol. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening oh ok, I mean I've never tried it, I've been watching a lot of video on composting. Think I'll carry on how I normally do it. Yea I've taken the top outta one a few weeks ago. Fingers cross. I love a fire out in the cold. Stay safe
I agree cool fireplace. Question the sprouts does it matter if you cut them off or twisted them off to get the regrowth? As always stay safe and stay gardening from Langley 🇨🇦🧑🌾✌️☮️🍆🥬🥕🌶🎄
I misread the title and thought you were asking how you looked "after a brussels sprouts..... diet?... Smoothie regime? I read it again and realised how you look after your sprouts. So glad you do, possibly my favourite vegetable after potatoes. Very informative video, I shall probably watch this again. Take care, Poo P.S. I would imagine if you'd been on a sprout smoothie regime or diet you would probably look rather lonely! Catch my drift? LOL
Wow those sprouts look amazing Terry. I am growing sprouts for the first time this year and am pleased to say I have quite a few sprouts forming - not nearly as many as you right enough. Question for you... some of the sprouts look a bit loose, as this they may be starting to blow. What causes this and how can I prevent it? Thanks in advance. Take care. Mags 🌺🌼🌸🌻
Sink a strong stake next to the plant and tie the stem to the stake with strong material. Strong winds rocking the plant is one reason why sprouts blow .
Trevor has hopefully answered your question Mags and support is always required and I always take the tops out and they have never blown. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
Thanks Terry. I.only answered Mags query because i mistakenly thought that you'd overlooked it. I still watch and enjoy all your videos. Have a nice Christmas and keep well.
@@trevorwills3356 I have lots of comments and don't always spot the replys and you answered the question that I didn't know and that's how we all learn from each other so join in with the comments anytime Trevor.
Excellent video Terry and I have never really watched the Queen's speech because I am not into knowing or being interested in what the Royal family gets up to but do respect people's choices to do so. It's good to have an alternative to the Queen's speech(technically it's not written by the Queen and it's not her words but rather written by the government that is in power in this case someone in the Tory Party) because it won’t interest everyone.
Saved video, notes taken. Love the sound of the sprouts popping off. You can't give it away, you still need the fork to flip your leaf mold ? Cheers Terry
They were a bit late going in this year due to the beds only just being built Karen, but March is around when they go in. They stay in the grow room till then. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
I love sprouts but in my first season I couldn’t get netting or BT in time due to lockdown so was hit massively with cabbage butterfly, I had to cut my losses an get rid. That plus learning about spacing were hard lessons to learn. This yr I’m going to square foot garden while I get use to spacing and harvest timings, you’ve inspired me to try again!
Thats working well mate. Its a big stove. Nice guttering score and the rebar it wasnt dumped it was waiting for pick up lol My sprouts did well this year for the first time. I did plant them to early but they did ok. A dull axe is a dangerous axe.
Hello Michael, I sow mine in March April time and depending what pests you have which will be a learning curve for you will depend on the protection. I have issues with pigeons so i hang a net over the top so they can't land on the tops, butterfly's can be a problem, but I tend to not net completely cover as they will lay the eggs through the netting anyway onto the leaves. Hope this helps and please don't hesitate to ask questions if you continue to watch some of my videos. Happy gardening, Terry King.
5 years ago I thought they would break down, I agree that they do not, I have 5 years worth still around the yard waiting till I find something to do with them.
Terry I noticed that one plant the sprouts were spiralling up clockwise and on another anticlockwise does that mean they are different varieties and does it make any difference to the quality etc.
I will have to take a closer look Richard, just done another video for Sunday so will check it out in a future video and ask if anyone has seen this before. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
The sprouts are almost full size when I start removing the leaves starting from the bottom working my way over time to the top. I hope your sprouts develop and fill out for you. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening It doesn't seem to be an overnight trip for them. I'm finding the slugs and snails as I pick during daytime. I used nematodes in the summer which reduced the slug population, I find small snails in crevices on the sprout plant. I haven't deleafed as much as you which may help, I just wish the welsh water would stop falling. Dissuades the birds and facilitates the molluscs. Freshly picked sprouts are a revelation. Thanks for the reply.
At what point during growth so you remove the leaves ? I have well established sprouts growing with no issues and just curious to know if and when to remove leaves.
As soon as the sprouts look a good size, too many leaves with make the sprouts grow more and end up blowing. Take the tops out once fully formed and store as they are until you need them, if you are unsure try different methods and stick to what suits you Bill. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Only remove the dying leaves at that stage because its the leaves that collect the energy to create the sprouts, remove the leaves as the sprouts grow. Happy gardening, Terry King.
I have used some log ashes on my #overwinteringpotatochallenge21/22 Andy and during January I will be adding some to my fruit bushes and strawberries. Cheers my friend. 🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
Only remove the leaves once the sprouts have formed starting at the bottom and working your way up as the sprouts form further up, if you want to store them at the end of the season remove the top and remaining leaves and leave them in the ground, harvest some sprouts as required or take a stem. This was a good year for me but we can get failures too. All the best and don't hesitate to as any questions. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

It is time to try something that will hopefully prove a little more reliable. Thanks for a great update full of useful info :-)
Cheers Julia and if the Crispus do well next year then I will get some more, this is one of those crops that ether does well or completely fails.

Wow! Those are cracking sprouts! One of my goals for next year is home grown sprouts for the Xmas dinner!

I was thinking the same with the kerbs Nigel, but ether way most of the kerb will be buried. Really pleased with the sprouts, but the other club root resistance brassicas that I bought with them didn't do very well, did get one good cauliflower though.

Good info about sprouts. I have never been able to successfully grow them. Think I need to ground them in more and stake them. Thanks for the info
I always struggle and hopefully i will get a good crop every year now Suzzy.

@@terrykingsallotmentgardening oh ok, I mean I've never tried it, I've been watching a lot of video on composting. Think I'll carry on how I normally do it. Yea I've taken the top outta one a few weeks ago. Fingers cross. I love a fire out in the cold. Stay safe
@@markshaw5835 😁👍😁
I agree cool fireplace. Question the sprouts does it matter if you cut them off or twisted them off to get the regrowth? As always stay safe and stay gardening from Langley 🇨🇦🧑🌾✌️☮️🍆🥬🥕🌶🎄
Twisting them off takes too much off back to the stem so cutting leaves something for the little sprouts to form.

@@trevorwills3356 thank you Trevor didn't know that.

So so true David, would be good to have an honest version.

Hi Terry, good bit of advice regarding brussles. When do you plant them out?
They were a bit late going in this year due to the beds only just being built Karen, but March is around when they go in. They stay in the grow room till then.
🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
I love sprouts but in my first season I couldn’t get netting or BT in time due to lockdown so was hit massively with cabbage butterfly, I had to cut my losses an get rid. That plus learning about spacing were hard lessons to learn. This yr I’m going to square foot garden while I get use to spacing and harvest timings, you’ve inspired me to try again!

Hi terry when do put your sprouts in do have to cover as I’m new to this thank you
Hello Michael, I sow mine in March April time and depending what pests you have which will be a learning curve for you will depend on the protection.
Thanks Terry, always informative, do you recycle the sprout stalks?
They go in the green bin at home William, haven't got a shredder and they don't rot down at all in the Compost bin.

When do you remove the leaves? What size are the sprouts when you do? Thank you.
The sprouts are almost full size when I start removing the leaves starting from the bottom working my way over time to the top. I hope your sprouts develop and fill out for you.

Great sprouts Terry, mine get holed by slugs or grazed by snails, any suggestions?
Put a piece of plastic at the bottom of the plants and collect the slugs as they rest Gwen, vigilance is key.
🎅Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@gwenscoble6229 this wet weather has increased the population, pleased that Nematodes have helped you.
Two strips of copper or aluminium tape round the base separated by 1/8 inch, and connected to a 9v battery.
Thank you for the information! Is it OK if I cut the leaves before the Brussels sprouts start growing?
Only remove the dying leaves at that stage because its the leaves that collect the energy to create the sprouts, remove the leaves as the sprouts grow.

Hi terry i am new to growing.. do i remove the leaves of the sprout plant or leave them on ??
Only remove the leaves once the sprouts have formed starting at the bottom and working your way up as the sprouts form further up, if you want to store them at the end of the season remove the top and remaining leaves and leave them in the ground, harvest some sprouts as required or take a stem. This was a good year for me but we can get failures too. All the best and don't hesitate to as any questions.
