So, the wife was all stoked when she saw this earlier today, when you mentioned your preparation method. Tonight we had brussels sprouts sauteed in red wine. It was okay, but cut them in half, broil them with olive oil and salt and pepper, then aioli for dipping. That is the bomb.
When I was 12 years old I went into the hospital to get my tonsils out and the hospital served me brussel sprouts. I gagged and thought I would die and vowed never to touch them again. About 2 years ago, when I was 61, I went out to dinner at a vegan restaurant with my husband and thought it was time to address my irrational hatred of brussel sprouts. I tried the restaurant's side dish and it blew me away. Earlier this year I made a baked cheezy casserole with brussel sprouts and we really liked it. Now I'm trying to find a nice spot on our property to grow them.
My kids love brussel sprouts but they've only had them frozen from steam bags, but this year we are growing our own! Can't wait to harvest. We've been watching so many of your videos, being from Michigan starting a garden it's nice to hear info that pertains to our crazy climate! Thank you!
Thank you for the guidance. This is the first year that I have planted Brussels sprouts. It’s one of my favorite vegetable of all times. I agree with you. It’s got to be fresh not frozen. One of my fav recipe. Cut them in half, deep fry them in oil, once they’re crispy on the outside take them out of the oil, strain them and put grease ground pepper and balsamic vinegar dressing. If I hav e a party or I’m invited to one, I always have many people asking for the the recipe and it’s always the first dish that is GONE. Never had leftovers. Enjoy.🥰
I'm just trying brussel sprout plants for the first time. They're shorter but producing sprouts. I started all my Brussels, brocolli cauliflower I late July. I put them in the only space I had available so they didn't get a ton of sun in the beginning, I was afraid of bolt. But they're growing. Since it's Dec, I made a clear plastic house that surrounds all these. I had to because we got a surprise hard freeze early and that damaged a few leaves on the brocolli. So I pull the plastic back on nice sunny days. Cover only completely only when freezing weather is coming. It's been 120 days now & seeing veg starting on most. I hope this works for my first try. I'm zone 7 in the mountains of NE AL. I've heard a lot people have been unsuccessful in growing all these plants in my area so feeling blessed. Next year, I will try starting all these in pots earlier. Maybe I'll get food sooner? Hope so. Thank you for the video. I was beginning to worry that I wouldn't see any food, only leaves.
Thank you Luke. I enjoy watching all the "how to" guides. You have reignited my passion for home gardening. Since coming across your channel, I have developed my plans for building two raised beds early next year. Starting small and moving up from there.
the leaves are edible and can be cooked like collard greens. I harvest several a week to help promote sprout growth and sautee them with EVO, garlic, and montreal steak seasoning. Couldn't pay some friends of mine to eat the sprouts but they will beg me to fix the leaves.
Never grew Brussels Sprouts. For that matter didn't have a fall garden. I was missing out. I've had BS pressure steamed with butter, balsamic and port wine. Sweet and YUMMY. You could also reduce some balsamic to a syrup and drizzle over steamed sprouts. I'm planting them tomorrow. (I live in Southern California and can plant in July for a winter harvest. I Love Life!) Luke, you are the Man! Love your videos. Learned a lot. You actually saved my Onions. Can't thank you enough. Keep up the great work! God Bless.
Thanks for the tip! I love them roasted with root vegetables. Cut in half and I add olive oil and Italian herbs to all the veggies (or whatever you like) :) Roasting brings out a slightly sweet, nuttiness to the sprouts. So tasty!
Love the vids. I'm newish to gardening. I've been growing cannabis for a while and fell in love with gardening that way. So I'm new to fruits and vegetables gardening. Funny, I seem to get almost as much enjoyment growing food as I do growing cannabis. Gardening man totally the way to inner peace. Anyways I watched this video a while back and i misunderstood the trimming (cannabis has a far different growth strategy), I trimmed several bottom leaves far too early but everything seems fine. Glad I rewatched.
Also BIG THANKS u have become my number one run to for tips tricks and help I trust your garden abilities over the rest of the internet so Luke & Cindy hugs of gratitude guys
Great info! Came here to get a question answered about the brussel sprouts we have growing at our community garden. You answered my question. Thank you for the info and the video. This is our first year growing brussel srouts. We planted (4) to start with to see how they would do. So far, so good! Couldn't be happier with the results so far.
I really love them to. I did give them a try but i had a white fly problem after a while, then because of that I took off all if the leaves as you did, not knowing that I was supposed to do so. They were growing but they weren't forming well at all. Yours look nice and tight and forming well, mines were very loose and not forming at all. I ended up pulling them when I realized they weren't cooperating. But you just encouraged me Luke as usual, imma give it another shot, because I to LOVEEE me some Brussel Sprouts. I would love it more if I could grow a bunch for me and the family to enjoy all the time. Thanks buddy
How funny at the end where u say U hated them as a child. Same here! Then now as an adult and now that I grow my own veggies I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ❤️😍❣️💖 LOVE THEM 💯!!!!!
Oh my gosh again with your videos!! Grew these for the first time this year but never got around to learning how to grow them!! I've got about 6 HUGE PLANTS full of leaves but never knew to pick leaves off!! It's mid November, hope it's not too late, one plant is really huge with tons of Brussels sprouts but they didn't really plump out. Now I know why!! Thank you so much. I hope I can catch them in times to pull leaves off and get something anyway.
Oh good, I did something right! First time for brussel sprouts. I had trimmed them up the other day to make it easier to control the aphids. That worked and I have the benefit of getting bigger sprouts!!! Perfect! Thanks for your great videos.
Fresh Brussels sprouts are the best! Have the same experience! Hated them for 20y out of stupidity, untill I ate fresh at a restaurant blew my mind! They are amazing in a vegetable stew with fresh potatos and in creamy cheesy combinations! Great content
Thank you so much ,you are so easy to understand what you are saying, the information are excellent, love the way you are explaining how to grow brussel sprout.
Luke, I live in Scottsdale, AZ . I'm trying all you tips this year. I have a very small area in my patio 4 x 12 feet. I have build up the soil over the passed year, with coffee grounds daily. Putting in a core of grass clippings down the center 8 to10 inches deep. trying some lettuce and radishes for now the first frost is at the mid of Dec. here. Thank you for all you do for us all. Your awesome.
the best meal ever roasted brussels sprouts with garlic. the prob i have with growing them is that they need to either be cold framed in the spring or planted in the heat of summer here in z5, i had good luck one year with purple brussels sprouts but thei flavor wasnt as good as green. luke is the best gardening teacher on earth bless him
I just started eating brussel sprouts late last year and really like brussel sprouts roasted with salt, black pepper and onion powder with chicken and potatoes roasted with same seasoning to and we are going to plant brussel sprouts this year in our veggie garden!
Oh perfect timing Luke. I planted 2 types of Brussels sprouts in my raised bed but was too greedy and grew them way too close. Glad you mentioned the spacing which I need to correct. I will try to transfer them then.
Ive already got 2 kinds of Brussels sprouts seeds for next year! I can't wait! I love fresh Brussels from our farmers market still on the stock! Great price only $7. & I picked 67 off it which was 3 side dishes but Im excited to grow my own!! Thanks for the great tips!!
I actually like them frozen from the store, boiled with a little salt pepper and butter but this year I'm growing my own and this vid helps. Can't wait! Thanks Alot!
This was exactly what I needed to see! I couldn’t figure out why people had stalks and mine just leaves with sprouts growing between. Makes since to break the leaves off. First year with a garden and we love Brussels sprouts so thought we would try a couple plants. Thanks for the tips!
First time I've grown brussel sprouts, where I live in Southern Western Australia. Been wondering why I haven't seen any tiny brussel sprouts growing yet in 3 months. 2-3 feet tall already and now I know - I need to complete the leaf removal process, which my chooks are going to just love. I'm now looking forward to watching the baby sprouts form. Thank you Mlgardener.
Love your videos sir. Before eating those goodies, take off some of the brussel sprout leafs on the sprouts themselves, wash well, damp dry, salt and olive oil in a bowl. Toss well, bake at 350 on a pan for 20 minutes or until browned. Sprout chips, amazing.
Thank you. So helpful. FINALLY mine are doing pretty good this year. But I'll go out today and break off more leaves. I'd love that recipe you mention!
greetings from Arizona growing zone 9b. we are looking forward to planting our fall crop this july! starting indoors of course! thanks for the tips and tricks, wish us luck defeating the pest pressure. lol
Luke. I am a new gardener and amazing to me and.my wife, I love it. I am a brussel sprout lover and am growing my second set, (first set bombed) however, I hope this will help me. I am addicted to your channel bruh.
We love eating our brussel sprouts when cooked bacon on the frying pan. However, Ive had them brasied with Red Wine as well and they awesome as well ! Ive planted 6 plants for this season (first time grower of BS) & Im hoping to have a decent harvest. Thanks for posting this video, I look forward to watching more.
Mine are about 4, 5 inches apart AND in a 14-inch container, haha! My first time! I plan to prune all the leaves that intersect in the center of the plants and only leave the outters leaves for photosynthesis, opening the center of the plants for air circulation and space. I like to experiment, so we'll see how they do!
Awesome guide to growing and maturing sprouts. I have to admit this one made me laugh. Feeling under the weather and grouchy. Watched the vid to the end, and have to admit I was also fed frozen yucky sprouts. But now grow my own delish sprouts. Much like most vegs. You cannot beat homegrown vegs. Garden On!!!
That white butterfly was just taunting you bro!😂😂😂😂 like "haha i layed my eggs in their haha" and kept flying right in front of the camera 😂 nature is funny
We had a long cold spring in the twin cities in Minnesota this year and then went into a hot dry early summer. My Brussels sprouts starts from the garden center just sat there. How was your first harvest?

So darn helpful, especially the leaf breaking part. NO one tells ya that part. I learn so much watching your videos!
I've been told with shock on people's faces to not break them. Every TH-cam gardener has said to break them. I'll be breaking my in about a week.
Always break them because it will help the plant put more energy where it needs to be
Ditto!~
I LOVE Brussels Sprouts!! I called them baby cabbages when I was a kid. YUM! YUM!! God Bless! Carmen
My kids love brussel sprouts but they've only had them frozen from steam bags, but this year we are growing our own! Can't wait to harvest. We've been watching so many of your videos, being from Michigan starting a garden it's nice to hear info that pertains to our crazy climate! Thank you!

I need tips for growing a vegetable. TH-cam what I'm looking for and scroll till I find Luke's video. Works everytime!
the leaves are edible and can be cooked like collard greens. I harvest several a week to help promote sprout growth and sautee them with EVO, garlic, and montreal steak seasoning. Couldn't pay some friends of mine to eat the sprouts but they will beg me to fix the leaves.
I did not know that the greens were edible. Thanks. Best
mcraw4d I had no idea! 🍻🌱
make great compost too! lol
Sounds YUMMY! Thanks for sharing. Think I'll try growing next year.
So, you can eat the full leaves and not just the sprouts?
Roasted brussles with bacon , feta dried cranberries and balsamic.....heaven
Never grew Brussels Sprouts. For that matter didn't have a fall garden. I was missing out.

Chewing on a freshly picked Brussel sprout ... heavenly!
WE have about 25 Brussels sprouts plants and had no idea what to do to get results. This was very helpful.

As a kid I ate raw Brussel sprouts from a friend's dad's allotment, magnificent! I love them now! Also growing for the first time this year.👍

Nice video Luke. I've struggled getting Brussels sprouts - likely due to not fertilizing properly. Have a good day!
Wonderful info - never knew about breaking off leaves. LOVE the Brussels, sliced with onions and walnuts roasted in oil topped with parmesan cheese!
Thank you. I would have never know to take the leaves off my plants without your advice. Keep them coming!
Oh perfect timing Luke. I planted 2 types of Brussels sprouts in my raised bed but was too greedy and grew them way too close. Glad you mentioned the spacing which I need to correct. I will try to transfer them then.

Plant thyme and rosemary next to the plants, the scent will throw off the cabbage worms.
Step by step tutorial with great delivery and kitchen tips as a bonus. Subbing now.
That step is genious! Been growing them for a couple years now and had no idea! Thanks for the tippage!

Sliced and roasted with olive oil garlic and manchego cheese or Parmesan. Drizzle balsamic vinegar. Yum!!
Add dried cranberries and feta 😍
That’s how I prepare them. Delicious
How do you prep with that. Blessings 😱
I seriously had no clue about the leaves like that! Thanks!
I'm growing some this year. A friend planted some last year and let me run off with some leaves. I blanched them and they were delicious!
Excellent advice. Cannot wait until next spring!
been growing them for over 20 years and never did this while had perfect sized sprouts. Will have to give this a try on the ones this year.
How did it work out for you
One of my favs to grow and eat. I like waiting till after first frost or two as it tends to sweeten their flavor.
My first year growing them, great tips!💜💜
I am growing them first time this year, thanks!

Hey awesome vid I'm from Mi but moved to Ga so learning all over again
I love brussels sprouts thank you for the tips
You are thorough & motivating! Thanks
Awesome! I’m trying them this year!
We had a long cold spring in the twin cities in Minnesota this year and then went into a hot dry early summer. My Brussels sprouts starts from the garden center just sat there. Here we are at the end of august and they are maybe 9” tall😆. I learned elsewhere that the timing of the hot days might have contributed to stunted growth. I doubt I’ll get any sprouts this year but it’s nice to know the leaves are edible like collards. I might experiment and break off some of the few leaves on them and see if they form sprouts. Per your video I think I have a much better idea of what to do next year!
