It's not just the technique that's impressive - it's the overall composition. Being able to get the colors to work together and contrast so well seems equally important as the actual brush skills. Well done!
The sculpt, the super easy oil blends and subtractive highlights, the combination of conventional acrylic highlights and ink filters. Absolutely great video, I learned a lot.
Looking at it under the bright light: "Oh, that's nice!" Looking at it in the final shot: "Holy crap, that is VIBRANT" I'm impressed at how well that looks under some more regular lighting. You did an excellent job, here!
I have been using oil paints since I heard you and Scott talk about the Dimitri video on the podcast. I immediately bought a thing of Windsor newton oil paint starter set and I have been implementing them ever since . Oil washes are my go to washes now and the oil paint blending has really helped me with non-metallic metal since I can smoothly blend out the brightest white and the darkest dark of the Gradient. Thanks for all your content and fun wit to keep the hobby exciting
Great idea laying some initial colors and lighting down before the oils. Going to try these techniques on a red dragon that’s been haunting my shelf of shame for basically forever.
Always nice to see videos showing techniques that don't require an airbrush. They're a wonderful tool for sure, but I lot of hobbyists don't have access to one, and with minis constantly getting bigger this is very useful stuff! 😄
Beautiful paint job! I don't have an airbrush and this makes me feel so much better knowing what can be achieved! I absolutely love the colors you chose
I've never used an airbrush on big miniatures. I'm sure it would speed up the process but I enjoy doing everything the old fashioned way. It just feels so satisfying.
I'm kinda confused as to why some people are so against airbrushes. They're $50-$200, new. Just buy one. If you can't afford it, then talk to your boss about working just an extra hour a week - ask to come in an hour earlier on whatever day is "the busy day"; you'll be able to afford it in a couple months.
I’ll tell you my barrier to entry isn’t just the air brush, but the compressor, the booth, the vacuum, the additional paints, the cleaning supplies, the space needed, etc… and to be fair I don’t know everything about them or how much work or maintenance they require, but my understanding is they take time to set up, use, and clean for each color you want to paint. So if it takes 5-10 minutes to clean your air brush for each color, I’d rather just paint with a brush. They seem to me to require much less fuss. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s pretty comparable maintenance/time-wise but I don’t want to spend $200 to find out.
I would use an airbrush if I could, but I live in a tiny studio apartment, so a video like this is super helpful for getting started on that project I've put off.
Fair warning: Daryll is definitely going to work on his 1983 Trans Am tonight, and he'll be blaring Bad Company and Molly Hatchet on the garage's sound system until at least 3am. He only turns it up that loud so you can enjoy it too.
I have a huge Ancient Green Dragon print zenithaled and ready to paint - I was just agonizing over how to begin with mu oils - great video as always, Jon!
My new 3d printer came today also!!!!! So excited to do some resin printing!!!! I loved Danny's first kickstarter and my other non resin printer did a great job for the terrain. I bought this new kickstarter as soon as I could and am super pumped to print some of the minis from both kickstarters in resin
Art student here, you can also clean the pigments out with the linseed oil you use to thin them down and then wash them out with dawn in case you don’t wanna fuss around with mineral spirits. You just need a silicoil and a ton of linseed oil.
@@Ninjon yep! That’s exactly it. No need to dispose of flammable solvents or deal with fumes that way and the oil actually lasts a super long time in the silicoil.
This video was kinda weird for me cus for the whole video I was thinking 'these techniques are really interesting but it still looks ugly', then you zoom out at the end and BAM it's lovely. Excellent video and really good painting
This video is really helpful! I’ve collected various paints, inks, and kits for painting across a lot of types of crafting- so seeing you use oils (I have water soluble oils so I will give it try the same way) and acrylic inks (I have calligraphy/ alcohol inks would those work? ) - gives me so many ideas to use what I have and new pigments to use in mini painting
Wow, that is a beautifull paintjob. Thank you for introducing us to oil paints, I have been a bit scared to use them, but I might try something in my next project.
Hey ninjon, i just wanted to let you know that youre awesome! Every time I see youve got a new video up, it brings a smike to my face because i know im in for something great! So thank you, and I hope you're doing well:)
I can’t even wait until the video is over to tell you: get some Gamsol! It’s even less toxic than mineral spirits and probably even smells less. It might cost a little more, but it was definitely my preferred solvent when I was painting with oils.
I was going to buy a airbrush but after the extra's, the mask, the filters I'd need to keep buying and changing, the spraybooth, etc I decided to cancel my order, it was a lil heartbreaking as I was excited but I think this is the smartest thing for where I am right now, It's nice to see that literally the day after this video comes out. It's almost like you are a ninja, ninjon!
I am not a big fan of how the wings turned out (the big spots, the purple and the green/brown transition) but really liked how the body ended up. Nice highlights and contrast with those red spikes. Well done.
Dam dude that Dragon is top notch, see interwebs this is how its done. Im new to all this mini painting and i was wondering to myself about using oil paints also, my mother and 2 aunts paint with oil. From what i just witnessed it might now be mandatory, if anything its another tool in the arsenal. I hope my Dragon looks half as good when i get to it, still working on my original HeroQuest army, 107 figures, gotta start the hobby somewhere.
Truly amazed with the brilliancy and vibrancy of the colors on the final shot. Truly impressive, reminds me of some rare deadly flower from the depths of the amazon or something. Funny how in nature most beautiful things will kill you. Another home-run, thanks for sharing and please be safe!
Would you be willing to make a I guess how to video for your new printer? I have been 3D printing for a couple years now but have only ever used FDM printers (which have a hard time printing small detailed things) so I've actually been eyeing up these brand of printers, but have NO idea as to the best way to use them or remove supports since its a completely different kind of printer and uses resin. Been loving these videos! Excited to see what other ones you have in store :)
Hey Jon! Nice paint job as ever. I even stayed when you told us not to click next video, though, due to hating being told what to do, the temptation was strong! 😂
Thanks for doing a large model, and for making mistakes. Too often I see people like Duncan Rhodes paint where eveyrthing goes perfect. That's all nice, but from you, I'm learning how to not get discouraged, and how to fix things. Please keep up the great videos. I recently finished an imperial knight and I'm working on a Baneblade, all without an airbrush. By the time I was finished with the knight I was almost insane (well, more than usual) , but I learned a lot of new techniques: First was using straight ink to brighten and even out a patchy color. I got a neat mottled effect I will certainly use in the future. Second was that super "slick" paints like Krylon aluminum don't take acrylic washes that well at all. I'm not quite brave enough or equipped enough to try oils... yet...
Great video on oils! I'm currently working through two boxes of indominus with every single Marine being a kit bash using strictly oils. It's been an incredible push of my skill I feel like I learned a lot. The necrons will be next. I feel you've covered everything I would have wanted to explain to someone using oils for the first time in a very approachable way.
There's so much oil on that dragon, the US is about to declare war to 'liberate it'! Awesome technique Jon! I've been hesitant to buy an airbrush before moving on to bigger models, but I may give this a try first! XD
Already can’t wait for the next video love how to trying different methods out. Only been painting like a month and my oils turned up today looking forward to trying them
I feel like his other brother Daryl is going to pop in and call you a Oil paint cheater. Though I must admit that is one sexy looking beast.... the dragon I meant the dragon. ;D
I think we need to have Daryll on the podcast as a guest
That would be awesome.
Agreed
Yasssss!!!
that'd be cheating. You darn airbrush cheaters!
that would be great! I feel like Daryll understands the plight of the common artist. He gets it
(nice outfit btw XD)
That chair spin intro gets me everytime! 🤣
Ninjon: Hey there Friends
Me: Hey there Cheator
I really love that goofy spin around shot in the intro.
Jon: the only minipainting youtuber that doesn't have a pot of boltgun metal.
It's not just the technique that's impressive - it's the overall composition. Being able to get the colors to work together and contrast so well seems equally important as the actual brush skills. Well done!
Man, I didn't know Scott was making a cameo.
The sculpt, the super easy oil blends and subtractive highlights, the combination of conventional acrylic highlights and ink filters. Absolutely great video, I learned a lot.
Dude, put some crocs on when you go outside!
I’d rather walk on rusty nails barefoot, you heathen!
I am sensing some heresy over here. Time for a purge.
Thick Grey wool Carhartt socks with crocs shouldn't be underestimated. It's how I got through the pandemic haha.
I dig the choice of classical medieval soundtrack in a video about painting a dragon :)
definately needed that SWEET LUTE
Just commenting to say how much i love your goofy intro fumbling and spin smile.
I love it a lot
Love it. Did not change channel when the oil showed up. Totally worth it.
The in-chair spin from the intro kills me every time
Looking at it under the bright light: "Oh, that's nice!"
Looking at it in the final shot: "Holy crap, that is VIBRANT"
I'm impressed at how well that looks under some more regular lighting. You did an excellent job, here!
I do love how minipainters have their own "hater-persona" :D
That's the imposter syndrome
I wanna see an Australian hype man to balance it out
I never thought of that before...interesting
You easily have the best intro on youtube. You spinning around in your chair makes me laugh everytime.
Bloke just got away with wearing socks without shoes outside. A real alpha right there 👌
wowman! you are beyond talented! beautiful work!

ive grown to like this channel, daryll needs his own channel
Wow! So visually striking! I love the way you’re unafraid to use unusual color combinations to get a fabulous array of colors. Great video!
I love how he's already caught up to Scott in such a short time
he hearted it too haha suck it scott
Always nice to see videos showing techniques that don't require an airbrush. They're a wonderful tool for sure, but I lot of hobbyists don't have access to one, and with minis constantly getting bigger this is very useful stuff! 😄
Yet again amazing, been painting 35years and keep learning new things from your vids.
Dude, i love your energy. I'm getting ready to start a painting channel of my own purely for the love of painting Dragons. Thanks for existing
Bruh, the colors on that final turntable shot were POPPIN
Beautiful paint job! I don't have an airbrush and this makes me feel so much better knowing what can be achieved! I absolutely love the colors you chose
I've never used an airbrush on big miniatures. I'm sure it would speed up the process but I enjoy doing everything the old fashioned way. It just feels so satisfying.
Proudly brought to you by Crayola. Nice explanation of the method and value of oils.
Holy cow! Love that final result.
Really vibrant and exciting to look at. Feels almost like a chameleon dragon.

Man this into and into music is so dope! Great vibes!
Those colors are just FANTASTIC! Love the way it turned out.
love the beginning of your vids, always gives me a laugh. years ago but better late than never
Fair warning: Daryll is definitely going to work on his 1983 Trans Am tonight, and he'll be blaring Bad Company and Molly Hatchet on the garage's sound system until at least 3am. He only turns it up that loud so you can enjoy it too.
Subtractive method may be my freshly learned technique.
You rock!!!!!
I definitely wouldn't have been brave enough for a color palette such as this, but it works so well!!!! Thanks for the newly found confidence
This would be a really awesome technique for a Krootox as well, lots of little scales and fiddly bits to catch the light 🤔
I would like to see a crossover video between nerdy Casey and Daryl. I think they have a lot of good information for us.
I audibly scared my cat with how loud i said “holy shit that’s so vibrant!” When that end shot came up.
Fantastic work! Thanks Jon!
Don’t forget to like and comment to appease the almighty algorithm 😁👍🏼
This is the way.
Does commenting on a comment's comment help?
I have a huge Ancient Green Dragon print zenithaled and ready to paint - I was just agonizing over how to begin with mu oils - great video as always, Jon!
I love how the level of the videos increases consistently. Good Job :)
No shoes, only socks outside? A mark of a true ninja 👍
I love your choice of colours on this miniature. It looks superb!
Love how vibrant this dragon came out! Great job as always Jon!
Super cool alternative painting techniques. Thanks man.
My new 3d printer came today also!!!!! So excited to do some resin printing!!!! I loved Danny's first kickstarter and my other non resin printer did a great job for the terrain. Awesome Dragon sheer awesomeness paint work and I’ve added it to my Facebook account page to
Quality opening!

Ohhhh, do you fill a silicoil with linseed oil and just keep reusing that to clean the brushes (followed by dish soap wash)?
@@Ninjon yep! That’s exactly it. No need to dispose of flammable solvents or deal with fumes that way and the oil actually lasts a super long time in the silicoil.

That is an awesome dragon!! I’m loving your subtractive painting method!
Awesome. Welcome to the oil club
Hey ninjon, i just wanted to let you know that youre awesome! Every time I see youve got a new video up, it brings a smike to my face because i know im in for something great! So thank you, and I hope you're doing well:)
i rcently painted the Pathfinder Gargantuan Red Dragon without and airbrush (i don't have one) and it came out amazing
I can’t even wait until the video is over to tell you: get some Gamsol! It’s even less toxic than mineral spirits and probably even smells less. It might cost a little more, but it was definitely my preferred solvent when I was painting with oils.

Gratz on the 100k, you really earned that.
This is so cool. My husband got some oil paints to try some of this out. I think I might try it too.

Your videos are so darn fun and relaxing to watch!
even though I never played any miniature games, your whole vibe is extremely zen
The colors on this are beautiful, nicely painted!
I was so excited to see you pull out some oils, I'm just about to try them out for the first time and seeing your use is a great guide!
9:00 I too would like a dragon with polka dot wings.
Nicely done. I 'd watch your vids for just the intro so nice that the quality stays up whole time.

I hope so too

couldn't tell it was 3d printed
