my life has been a succession of peaks and troughs and I can tell you, when you're in a trough having a car that needs nothing spending on it and will fire up eevry time and get you to where you need to go is priceless. Plus those old Toyotas were pretty economical too. When you're on a downer the Corolla is the automotive equivalent of an old, slightly over-weight labrador that you've known since it was a pup.

I'd still rather have a less reliable car that is newer and way more exciting. To me a car should be more than a reliable work horse. Which is why (for now) I lease my cars. And yes, only new cars. As long as it reaches ~120K-150K KM pretty much without large hiccups I am happy.

I've owned approx 15 cars. In 2017-2019 I owned a 2003 Yaris which I paid £695 for. I drove over 30, 000 miles as my son was very ill in hospital and it meant 100+ miles daily for a couple of months, then regular routine appointments and checkups for him. The Yaris cost me £8 for front pads, which I fitted myself, and it never failed once, and never required any other new parts, even tyres lasted the 30k. Even though we had a harsh winter (which Incidentally was when the car was needed most as this was when my son was in hospital) I never worried about transport. I sold the car for £500. The best car that I've owned by a wide margin, wind up windows, tape deck and all.

I'm not with Scotty. Toyotas like this rust badly and get scraped faster than Pugs. Paint quality on them is bellow average. They are not great
in humid climates. To be fair, that's nothing unique for Japanese car, Mazda and Honda are worse and Subaru is all that, but their diesels blow
up. Still all of them are usually worse than European cars and yet they cost more. Also you should do your homework with any older Japanese
diesel car, they are either fine or blow up quickly and turn into scraps. Scotty is right if you live in dry climate, only buy petrol models and only drive automatics. For anything else his advice isn't optimal and he's full of shit.

I get your point about a car that 'puts a smile on your face' but, in the case of every last one of the cars you mentioned as examples, that smile will be very brief indeed and will soon be wiped off when the inevitable breakdowns start happening which makes the ownership of those cars a continuous nightmare. I'm talking from experience, whether it be myself or someone I know, that's why the current car I drive is a Toyota! Sure, it doesn't put a smile on my face the same way those expensive money pits did, but I'd take the peace of mind of knowing that my car will start every time and will never leave me stranded over a fleeting smile followed by months of mechanical/electrical headaches that I have to endure until I get rid of the car!

On my old knackered 2003 VW Golf 1.9 SDI with 250k miles it had a minor oil leak and it cost £70 to fix.

"But great on a tight budget." You're kidding right? I dunno what it's like over there in the UK but people over the years have come to realise the superior build quality and ease of maintenance of Toyotas so many owners now demand a pretty penny for them even compared to luxury euro cars. Theres a reason why they call it the 'Toyota tax'. Also it's quite arrogant to say they're dull when they have a luxury and performance line of cars as well (Lexus). I think a better comparison would be with a Lexus SUV which IMO far suprasses range rover in terms of comfort and reliability.

2:45 I'm willing to settle for "bland motoring." In a car, I want reliability and safety. A car that is cheap and easy to fix. My car is a tool like a hammer, screwdriver, or pliers. It takes me to work, to the grocery, and back home. My Toyota has 305k miles and was paid for long ago. Its dependability leaves me to concern myself with other things.

    • @ikaruga24
      @ikaruga24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That is exactly right. It just makes you have peace of mind. I had an old Honda Integra (the facelift model) that i was the third hand that had it and while it made me smile and feel special i also felt special because every week i was visiting my mechanic because something broke down. The electrics were all over the place, the engine would just overheat for no reason, the A/C would frequently break down, the back suspension was not even and thus one of the tires always got damaged quickly, the automatic gearbox would act up on it's own and it would even shut down if i didn't manualy hold on the gas pedal...it just went on and on. I know it's a case of how it was used and maintained but the point is i did live with an unreliable car for over 5 years. The smiles were not worth it in the end.
There was literaly no day and no moment in my life that my car was not in my mind on what new surprise was going to show to me next. I went back to an old hatchback corolla made in 2001 which i still own and still goes like new even after 265k kilometers (about 165k miles).

I've had it ages and you can park it up for long periods, come back and it all just works. The AC on mine is also ice cold, the auto box smooth and it's such a durable old car. The MOT tester comments how tidy it is, not a sport of rust. A dependable car that I know, if all of my other cars stop working, the Corolla will get you to where you need to be. Yes Scotty is right about Toyotas because they are like he says: reliable and dependable and cheap to maintain. And that is ALL THAT MATTERS to him. That is the question: for him that is all that counts, a car that is reliable and you don't spend a lot fixing that's it. With those premises, he's totally right. Now, if you want better design, more driving fun etc and those things are very important to you, then you'll have to look elsewhere. Well you have Hondas also, who are also very reliable and more fun to drive with better design. He loves Hondas too.
Me, i have a BMW, endless money pit as he says hahahaha mine i only spent 400 in 2 years maintenance so, not a money pit for now.

I bought a 2005 Corolla when I was between jobs and had to make every penny count. It had 150,000 on the clock. Since then I've taken it to 325,000. Everything you said is true - they're dull cars, not spirited or interesting but totally dependable. Heck, even a Volvo is about 100x more exciting to be in. I think I'll always keep the Corolla now as it costs pretty much nothing to have one.
They sip fuel lightly, they start first time every time and as long as you change the oil and filters regularly they run quietly and effortlessly. And oddly, they're fairly comfortable too. If you scrape the paint or scuff the plastic, so what? I've only had two actual parts break - the door on one of the storage compartments snapped off, and the sun visor snapped. Both cost less than $30 to replace.
I think of it like your favourite unfashionable hoodie that you wear around the house in mid-winter - it's not cool, but you use it because it works perfectly and it is comfortable. You get better clothes, but you always keep that daggy hoodie because you know it does the job.

You got a lot of money so you can say that. Cars are depreciating assets and are not cheap. Their main goal is to get to A to B but if you want all the fancy stuff like styling, speed, technology etc then you got to pay a lot of money. Most people I would say don't have that kind of money. I for one have a 2006 8th gen honda civic which i have had for 10 years. It was cheap to buy and luckily i actually think it looks pretty good, probably the best looking car released in 2006. It saved me a lot of money as i was not rich at the time. Right now i am changing my car for the "feelings" like you but only because i can afford it now. I'm trying to get a 20k car which is a huge jump from the 1-2k my Honda is worth right now

As you quite rightly put it if you are a car enthusiast of any kind life is too short to be running around in this. Best to send them to Scotty! You are also right about drivers here in Spain also the crap road layout and the stupid law about how to circulate a roundabout but that hasn't stopped me having a nice car, I just don't dare park it on street in town I always use the underground parking mights cost a couple of euros but my car is safe! Personally if you only come over once or twice a year and it's not in the middle of summer you are probably better off just renting a car when you are here. Car rental out of peak holiday season is so cheap here and you have no headaches with car maintenance, ITV / MOT, tax insurance depreciation etc. Legally you can only keep a UK registered car here for 6 months after which time you have to register on to Spanish plates which is costly and an exercise in itself!

I’m not so sure. I’m as much of a petrol head as you will find, but there’s something nicely mechanical about the way a dull Toyota operates. I would not choose an auto however. I have got to a stage in life where I am so busy, I simply haven’t got time not to own a Toyota or 2 in my fleet. If I relied on the more interesting things on my drive, I’d be forever pissing about fixing things. I simply can’t be arsed driving anything but my ancient Toyota a lot of the time. I don’t need to worry about parking dents, I don’t need to worry about some crazy electrical gremlins. I can jump in it, crash into any ditch/wall/kerb and simply carry on. But I understand most people tend to only have 1 or 2 financed to the hilt cars and are probably worried about losing face being seen in an old turdy-looking Corolla.

The "buzzing" in the brake pedal is likely the AntilockBrakeSystem. Earlier ABS brake pedals were still mechanical, instead of fly by wire, and the pulse would feed back through the pedals. If no lights are on the dash it is probaly just a little more sensitive than others. A 20 year old Toyota with only 40,000 or so miles is a good buy and could go 20 more years if they still make parts for it. Oil and filter changes are about all that's needed on them.

I don't need quick acceleration, sportiness, or large dimensions. Cities are getting increasingly congested and roads in my country are in rough shape, so those features will either be wasted or become a bother. The only equipment I want is AC, cruise control, and an AUX input. If the car has those, goes, turns, and stops when I want it to, and doesn't make my ears bleed on the motorway, we're off to a good start.

Toyota Corollas are like VW Golfs, just with the added bonus of reliability and actual mechanical quality, not just perceived quality by the plastics and rubberized textures. If you want excitement you go for the GTis or whatever high performance versions that appeared over the years. Although reliability/quality did take a dip with the E12 1,6 litre engines that consumed a lot of oil and needed recalls for exchanging the engine. Sadly this didnt cover all cars so there are some out there that end up sounding like diesels with too thin aluminium blocks and need a litre of oil every 1000kms. Although by VAG standards this is considered State of the Art and perfectly acceptable on their engines of the same era ...
Anyway, in most "normal" cars you make your own excitement by the way you drive or where you go to. Fun could be had in a 1988 VW Polo Fox with 45PS. It was already really slow back then and had no equipment but it could still be fun to drive if you hooned it 😃

I know EXACTLY what you mean, we purchased a Toyota Corolla Hybrid , mainly for its fuel economy ( and the wife is somewhat of a greenie) which it’s brilliant for. Easily gets 1000kms in town per tank, but it’s devoid of any type of pulse..... even Mr Bean would prefer to walk. So we also decided on a bit of a weekend toy ( which has turned into a daily drive for me) this being a BMW 123d (E82) which is a great bit of kit for its price - yes it’s economical at 6.3/100 but you don’t have to club it like a harp seal to get to the speed limit let alone the open road limit - where a lunch and a paper it’s required to pass the time like you do in the Toyota !!
Great content - keep it up ( and no not the one where you need the little blue pill)

I work on my cars, and some of those cars designs (non Toyota), I am like "WTF, who designed this stupid crap". The problem with rich car enthousiast, most of them don't work on their cars. Did an oil change on a Mercedes, where is the biiping dip stick to check oil level? Why Corolla, it's just simple, it makes me smile because it's so simple. Every single piece is there for a reason " oh look at my air suspension, I will have smooth ride. When they break down, it's a pain in the ass to replace them" Why change it if it works perfectly fine. The more I work on cars, the more I appreciate Toyota.

My first car was a 2004 Toyota Corolla, 1.4 litre petrol. I paid 4000 euro in 2013 for it. I drove it for 8 years, did over 150,000 miles and it never, ever, ever, ever gave one single issue. Oil, brake pads, disks and tyres. Wash, rinse, repeat. Bullet proof. I got rear-ended a couple months into owning it, the other car was a write-off and the Corolla had a slightly warped rear bumper, I never even had it checked. I recently bought a 2019 520D. Its glorious, lovely to drive, I feel great driving it. Its fun. But... in many ways it is the bullet-proof, reliable work-horse nature of the (older gen) Corolla that define them and give them character, in spite of their dull, vapid nature. A bit like a donkey. And everybody loves and admires a donkey. I still have the Corolla. And I'm almost certain that I'll have it longer than the BMW.

My father was one of these “Toyota” people. Well, not with Toyotas but with Hondas. He’d lived a lifetime of driving boring, bland, gutless cars with “highlights” being “metallic silver paint” or a “well-laid out instrument cluster” 😴. Eventually, with a bit of persuasion, I got him to realise he only has one life, so he started buying exciting cars. He traded the Honda life to drive about in a Supercharged Jaguar... and ironically, NOTHING has went wrong, yet.
He’s also traded in my mum’s 2017 Honda HR-V (yeah, they actually made a 2nd gen) for a new Volvo XC40 (I know that’s nothing special, but it’s well out of their usual comfort zone)

First Corolla I drove was back in 1974. Drove from West Yorkshire to Staffordshire, Shropshire, around there a bit and back home. Never put ant patrol in. Quite impressed at the time.

Not all Toyota's are boring and forgettable
The new GR Yaris is probably THE best hot hatch available atm, the Celica GR Four was an amazing car back in the day as were the old MR2's, the GT86 is a brilliantly engineered cheapish drifting machine, the new GR Supra is pretty cool and of course Lexus is owned by Toyota too and they have some unbelievable cars like the LFA, V8 LC500, RCF etc.
So you can have fun, performance, leading edge tech and awesome fun in Toyota's, it's not just the German's who make exiting cars.

Now your motoring Matt. Been driving various makes of cars over a period of 60 years, including several BMWs, Range Rover and Porsche. Bought my first Toyota four years ago and it’s been a revelation. Maybe not as exciting, but for me, reliability is more important than image or outright performance.

I really enjoy your objective, informative and ever so slightly tongue in cheek videos. As for Scotty Kilmer, many apologies but I have never heard of him before, I do agree with his comments regarding Toyota vehicles. Probably having worked in a Toyota Dealership for many years I can fully appreciate the build quality and reliability they offer, well apart from the odd hiccup along the way.
Or it could be that I am one of those old boring, bland and magnolia coloured people who kind of like anonymous reliability and don't mind being overtaken by "petrol heads", even in my old Bentley, at high speed and enjoy seeing them just two cars ahead of me in a traffic jam.
In very old (Yorkshire) Motor Trade parlance the Corolla you have is what we would call a little pippin or a little gem. I would be more that happy to drive it down to some foreign parts.
Buzzing brakes - maybe the disc backing plate catching.
By the way, what is the opposite of a "petrol head"?

My wife and me grew up 6 children we never had money to buy a new car, so I drive what I find in great numbers at the junkyard, in my case Audi, you see I live about two miles away from the Audi factory and I was very pleased with them, besides you can build in many parts from Skoda, Seat and VW. Here on the streets of Germany are 16,000,000 cars from VW and they land after a time at the junkyard. My previous car was an Audi A3 1.9 TDI which I bought with 319,000 km on board and I drove it till it reached 704,655 km when I overturned on the motorway and was forced to give the car to the junkyard (you see God takes the best first). So you can drive what you like. Scotty gives tips to people who go to the repair shop with their cars and are there depleted of their money and I find that if you are someone who barely makes it from a months to the next then he is totally alright. Toyota has a better quality, but in Germany where I live there are only 1,500,000 Toyotas on the streets and I barely find something at the junkyard. On the other hand I repair on my own and almost never go to the repair shop. I once bought a Mercedes for 250 DM and repaired it on my own....God bless you.

Reliable is good, I needed a budget car as my daily whilst I garaged my Alfa Romeo as a fun car. Ended up with a choice between the Toyota Auris and the Honda Civic both roughly 2007 models. The Honda won in the end as the reliability is there too but the Civic 8th gen is a far more interesting car than the 1st gen Auris. I did have an old mk1 MR2, that was not boring but that was back when Toyota liked their sports cars.

I was 9 years old when my parents bought a Toyota Corolla, brand new. Same as this just the sedan version. We had this for 19 years. Yes, NINETEEN years. Except for the normal things like spark plugs, brakes, oil, filters, and gas we spent 300$ on that. It is 19 years old now the biggest problem is that the left doorstep having some rust. It could be 200$ to fix so let's say 500$ in 20 years. The car is just totally bulletproof. If the cars would be this good the repair shops would close but we have BMWs :) And yes! The car is boring. Boring as hell. Nothing fancy, no power, nothing. It just goes and goes and goes until you get so bored that you sell it.

Had plenty of fun thrashing a corolla around the peaks, but the fine line you speak of is basically a Lexus. Ive got a 2006 GS430, its fairly quick, full of gadgets, comfortable and nice to drive, all that and it all it costs me is a yearly service.

I had one of these, loved driving it just because of the reliability factor. Occasionally got dirty looks driving past Land Rover or Jaguar owners as they were getting put on the back of a low loader. 😁 Ended up selling this one to a mate who was going to shove a V6 in it although I don't know if he ever did.
But as to excited driving a Corolla, the T-Sport Compressor isn't a bad shout for a bit of fun. I'd also mention the first generation Auris was still known in other parts of the world as the Corolla. The JDM models got the 2GR-FE 3.5 V6 which is a real peach of an engine under the Blade Master model name.

In 2012 II brought used Corolla GS (I think) from my sister, it was V Reg (1999). I had trouble with it, so I sold it on eBay. I only had it for eight months. I did buy used 54 plate Corolla 1.6 L T Spirit but the trouble with it, when you do over 56 mph it needs another gear. I did reverse and I hit pole at ASDA car park and made shape on the rear bumper. The pole is below the back window. MY next car hope will be Toyota. I do like the old models better.

I bet you can still give it a good spirited drive and enjoy yourself. K11 micras are similarly bomb proof but I always found mine fun and characterful.
And looking at all the modern fiestas and bmws on the hard shoulder whilst I gunned it past them at 80 all day was part of the charm. An auto Corrola would be even better. For me, reliability is priority, its illogical to want something with inferior engineering.

Simple 90's Japanese cars like this are actually fun and characterful in their own right in todays complex digital world. I love fast and beautiful looking cars as much the next petrol head. Yet, I would be quite happy pottering about in a tidy old thing like this Corolla. Proper honest to god engineering.

I was looking for my first car a few months back. I was offered a 1.0 litre Micra for like £300. It ran great and probably would have lasted forever and been cheap to run but it had no actual equipment, apart from four seats and a steering wheel. I ended up buying a 2004 mk2 Clio 1.2 for the same price, which needed some work but it had a sportier vibe about it and a lot of toys for something that's 16 years old. I'm really proud of it. It's even easy to work on.

My reasoning behind owning a TOYOTA is this: It's good enough and reliable enough for me to use until I can afford to own something more fun and at that point I probably would need a daily, a job the TOYOTA would be perfect at so I wouldn't need to sell it.
It doesn't have a soul until you realise it has taken part in some memories such as «What is love?» playing on the radio just after you've dumped your girlfriend of four years or the simple fact it starts every morning except that one time it didn't because the battery was 12 years old.
The TOYOTA is that trusty friend which you don't have much fun with but you go for a drink with to have a decent discussion, he's always there when you need him, he never lets you down and never judges you despite the fact you might be a bad human being at times and he always forgives you. You see I can't say I'm passionate about my Auris but I have tremendous respect for it.

My last car was so bad and unreliable it caused me constant angsiety which was actually raising my blood pressure, so im very much enjoying my 2013 Avensis. When you rely on your car to make sure you keep your job and you cant afford to keep spooning out heaps of cash to keep it going, then yes Reliability is actually exciting. Sometimes Its very liberating to lose superficial tendancies. we cant all be a mechanic.
