- The famous spearhead from Rovaniemen Marikkovaaran is known for its Wolf Tooth pattern. In part 5, we have finally reached the point where I will be chiseling the teeth and create the matching counter pattern in wrought iron. This is the final missing piece before everything can be put together: socket, iron core, pattern-welded bands and now the high-carbon cutting edge with wrought iron teeth.
The original spearhead I am using as inspiration is displayed in a museum in Helsinki, Finnland:

I would also like to express my gratitude to Jim Austin from forgedaxes.com/ for helping along the way.

how does this dude not have more subscribers, this is so comfy to watch
Thank you for this insight in to making such an elaborate spear. I am amazed by how good it looks so far and it is crazy how the smiths from a thousand years ago could do this without modern tools!
Finally! Ive been dying to watch the creation of the wolfs tooth pattern. I know what im gping to try to do this weekend
Very cool process! Also very satisfying to watch those teeth being pressed into the wrought iron. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the extra forging footage as well, it doesn't feel like a tease this way 😉 👍
SUCH A GREAT DISCOVERY YOU ARE ! THANK YOU

Beautiful, can these be purchased.
apreciate u useing the metric system too
great video Niels. do you think they used to use wolf's teeth to add the Carbon to the steel when making these back in the day?
+CrossedUpChris ! In general, a lot of historic spearheads did but use high carbon steel. Very unlikely that the teeth were related to carbon content in terms of hardness.
I mean actual wolf's teeth. I know some old smiths used to bones of animals to their steel to give it the animal strength. but this was actually adding the Carbon. I like to think that the Carbon in a Wolf tooth spear could have come from wolf's teeth. :D
+CrossedUpChris ! Got it :-) for crucible steel I could see that.
Anybody know what the music at 3:53 is i need it know so bad ive heard that song in so many of his videos and i cant find it anywhere
