      In all first world countries bar one killing an animal that way would be a serious criminal offence. And rightly so. We live in the gunpowder era. I'd consider not using the right calibre or a well landed shot to be cruel and improper. The last thing we need is dickheads running around thinking they're fucking Conan the Barbarian spearing animals destroying the sport.

    • @GunnerAsch1
      @GunnerAsch1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bashpr0mpt244 Hunting boar with a spear is quite legal in most of the US, including California btw and Ive done a number of boar that way, including a nice 585lb Russian Boar. (265 kg). For boar hunting..a cross guard 12-18" down from the tip of the blade is almost a requirement. As one stabs or lets a pig charge and impaling themselves on the blade..they will continue to push down the shaft to eat you. (And yes..pigs will gladly eat a human being. We are not talking about Javalina (who also will eat you and comes in packs ). The cross guard prevents the hog from reaching you that way and allows you to keep out of his jaws. Just as historical as can be...and not a sport for the timid or weak. Now that Im old..Id simply prefer to shoot them with arrow or bullet, load them up and be off to the butcher...but that being said...I thought I should inform you of your error. I should further mention that this is far more sporting and humane for both pig and man, than forcing them into a tight chute, chaining their hind legs, hoisting them into the air and then slashing their throats or applying a bolt gun to their skull as they are thrashing around. Sometime man wins...sometimes the pig wins. Ive applied first aid and called in an ambulance more than once on people where the pig won.

    As much work as you put into that beautiful spear head, just think what the viking blacksmiths had to go through to make it without the modern equipment you used..the presses and stuff...even more amazing when you think of that. What talent they had to do such work with only a hammer and forge..no presses, sanders, grinders, etc. Wow.

    That was absolutely beautiful. I've always loved to watch artisans share their passion. I'm a woodworker hobbyist but my father was a welder by trade. One thing that I am wondering and maybe you can answer: seeing how difficult it is to make the hollow part to receive to shaft, and having to considerably taper the wooden shaft to fit it in, wouldn't it make more sense to make a tang instead or would that make for a weaker fitting?

    Looks good for me so far a few delaminations at the end of the spear blade and the tooth leaves some holes but i know this is freaking difficult. There are so many chances to mess this up never done this before. Maybee in the future the most difficult thing for me is the socket and forge weld this. I made three diffrent boar spears so far but im lazy and used a pipe for the socket, but every spear was quiete a challange. Thanks for showing us the almost complete process.

    • @NielsProvos
      @NielsProvos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely tricky. The one I made before welded all the teeth fine but the one for the video definitely did not fill all the gaps. Next time, I made fuller the teeth a little bit to make some more space for the wrought iron to fill up the cavities.

    Hey there Niels - I have an idea that may help going viral, which may help given how terrible youtube has been for content creators.
    Game of thrones has just come back, and it features "valyrian steel" swords. These as speculated to use obsidian ("dragonglass") as a component.
    Obsidian is 70% glass, and melts at 920-1080 degrees C.
    If you did a wootz / crucible steel button using obsidian instead of glass, and labelled the video something like "Making real life valyrian steel", you could get a LOT of views.
    Potentially. Up to you, of course.

    • @NielsProvos
      @NielsProvos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      That's an interesting idea. I have a bunch of Obsidian lying around! I have also thought about making a meteorite sword as I have a couple kilos of campo de ciello lying around. Unfortunately, crucible steel is a two person operation but I may be able to find a victim!

    • @FakeGoogleName
      @FakeGoogleName 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I think making game of thrones oriented stuff would definitely help you blow up, especially since the new season has come out and people will be thirsty for content. Dragonglass (obsidian) is gonna be a big part of this next season so capitalizing on that and valyrian steel could be big

    • @IPostSwords
      @IPostSwords 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Niels Provos combine a tiny bit of the meteor (10% final weight, wootz doesn't like nickel all that much) with some vanadium steel (20% cr80v2) and make the rest wrought iron and an appropriate amount of carbon you'd have a very nice composition.
      If you do this, I would absolutely love a mention in the description for providing the idea. I run my own sword channel, even talking about wootz metallurgy in one of my videos.

    • @BigZ7337
      @BigZ7337 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds great

    • @SarafanUnin
      @SarafanUnin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are going to go the meteorite route, you might want to try and get your hands on Tektite. Its similar to obsidian, but rather than being volcanic glass, its a glass formed when a large impactor hits the ground and flash-melts the surrounding rock. They don't really knap like obsidian, if you were thinking of making a glass blade, but a nice chunk of polished Moldavite could make for a unique pommel.
      As IPostSwords mentioned, the nickel content of meteoritic iron can be a problem. But trying to recreate a meteorite's natural Widmanstätten pattern in pattern-welding could be an interesting technical challenge on its own.

  • @heathenwizard
    @heathenwizard 6 ปีที่แล้ว
