I just finished the book "why do the heathen rage". What a great way to learn history! I couldn't put it down. Finished it in a few days. Wish there was more.
what is it about ?
@@andreas3850 it's a historical novel starting in AD1123 shortly after the Field of Blood at Antioch and the recapture by Baldwin II. The story runs through the capture of the king, the recapture of Karphut, and ending just after the great victory at Azaz in AD1125. It focuses on a fictional character, Robert of Bures, in the story the son of William of Bures, but I believe all other characters are historical, including Baldwin II and Melisende and other allies. The book draws the large picture of the crusades and the protection of Jerusalem but also has stunning descriptions in detail including battle tactics, strategy, diplomacy, and the politics of the time. I consumed the book in a few days, and also my 10 year old son, who normally will not read serious topics at all, preferring humorous and slightly ridiculous stuff, took to it immediately, which was a great blessing. This was a genocide of pre reformation protestants. And more proof of the truth in protestantism. They even murdered the Catholics there.

Protestantism's foundation was built on a different interpretation of specific verses, and none of which is supported by the Old Testament, which is where the Catholic doctrine comes out of. The "Genocide" and anything else the Church did wrong doesn't mean anything, you don't stop believing in medicine if a Doctor uses it to murder his patients. You just simply don't do what that specific doctor does
The first time I learned about the Cathars was through a novel called The Treasure of Montségur, by Sophie Burnham.
Fiction, but the writer definitely did her homework.
If you want to experience how it feels to live during this time, I recommend you delve into a good book like this.

I think it would be really cool if you re-explored this crusade. There seems to be a lot of historiographical debate about how organized the Cathars really were, or whether the supposed heretics even believed what the clerics claimed. I’ve been reading Cathars in Question, a collection of essays from contemporary historians focused on the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade, exploring whether or not this religion existed in Italy and Southern France at all

DEATH OF SIMON DE MONTFORT (Warrior-Hero-Crusader):
...until in 1217 a rebellion broke out in Provence, where Count Raymond's son re-entered Toulouse. Simon hastened to besiege the city, but was hampered by lack of troops. On 25 June, 1218, while he was at Mass he learned that the besieged had made a sortie. Refusing to leave the church before Mass was over, he arrived late at the scene of action only to be wounded mortally. He expired, commending his soul to God, and was buried in the Monastery of Haute-Bruyère. He left three sons, of whom Almeric the eldest ultimately inherited his French estates; the youngest was Simon de Montfort, who succeeded him as Earl of Leicester, and who was to play so great a part in English history. -- Cath. Parts 2 & 3: Thanks for a masterful explanation of the complex detail of the Crusade itself. It is said that those operating the mangonel were women. If true, it can be said to represent a certain kind of poetic justice, given the northern French and Catholic Church's attitude to women, in contrast to the Languedoc and in particular Cathar view.

It was prosperous. As we see today transgenderism etc when a society has too much comfort the insane and irrational comes to fill the void of time previously spent on surviving.
@conlaiarla Exactly. You can even see that in the views Northern and Southern France locals held about each others at the time.
The Northerners thought of the Southerners as lazy, promiscuous, undisciplined, and easily tricked, which behaviour they attributed mostly to the prosperity and luxury of their lives.
Catharism was the unfortunate overreaction to a pre-decadent society, and the normal people, as usual, got trapped between these two extremes and the misery they brought on themselves.

Montsegur, i find it strange that there was no mention of it in the video, it was kind of a big deal in during the crusade. After the siege of the castle aprox. 200 Cathar priests were burned at the pyre

I've actually stayed there for a night on my own. It'sca hard experience to describe and I didn't sleep much as my mind was racing.

I was reading "Knights of the Cloister", the orders really liked this region -any opinion on that? They seemed to have at least twice as many "institutions" there.
I liked reading the Occitanian language, such energy, I wonder what it sounded like back then.
Occitan was (and still is) the language of love, the language the Troubadours and their female counterparts Trobairitz sang and spoke their beautiful poetry. It is still spoken today by many of the older generations and those who vowed to keep it alive. It is the most beautiful language I've ever heard. If you hear the song Le Bouvier it is a great example of the language and the Cathars. It makes me cry every time I hear it.

If they had waited, the Cathar sickness would've spread just like the Protestant Reformation.
The Cathar issue was far more pressing than retaking Jerusalem and the Levant, it was happening in the heart of Christendom, not thousands of miles overseas.
Fortunately, the Church understood that and took action quickly.

15:39 Toulouse technically wasn’t in Pedro II of Aragon’s kingdom or control but he did have the right to reign over Toulouse same as the Phillipe II of Francia has the rights of being king over Toulouse. Both kings of Aragon and Francia were competing for control in Toulouse and southern France. As both of them had the rights to rule the lands. Your videos are well detailed though, no hate just thought it was an important detail. A monarchy’s power only worked when they could control their nobles which they rarely could.
The crusade proved the Cathars beliefs to be true.
Well. Their beliefs were the very opposite of God's Word, and by claiming themselves to be "True" Christians, they were actually perverting Jesus Christ's teachings.

Manichiesm did not use God, especially not an Abrahamic concept of God as its proxy, rather they referred to "forces" of light and darkness in battle with each other. The Bogomils and their Cathar successors believed that Christ was the "good god" whereas God in the Old Testement was the "evil" material god rather then Christian teachings of the Trinity.

The Waldensians were proto-Protestants, as were the Albigensians. The Waldensians survived long enough to not have their records burned and their character maligned by the Antichrist of the Catholic Pope.
Morlund lives on, as does the Reformation. The churches of Piedmont will have a place in history.

It was not the most needed. It was completely unnecessary to persecute people of different beliefs. Also the French crusaders used the assassination as the final excuse for them to convince the pope to call a crusade to “legally” seize property and wealth. The Self important Catholic Church did not like the idea of competing religious beliefs as it undermines their control and oppression of the people.

@@lilo7741 Venitians still had hate in them because byzantine massacred latins in 1182 and betrayed richard at cyprus 1189, They used this hate to fuel their reasons and sacked Constantinople. They were ex communicated by pope moment they stepped foot on ships tho, so it was never really a crusade.
