Not rare at all for Bill Maher to have brilliant and totally sane guest who speak common sense (which is learned sense in all reality.) Conservatives just need to get off their religious BS ideals and out of their holy bubbles.

This is fantastic. I was raised as a preacher's kid and had relative privilege outside of school. My family comes from generational poverty and so I saw several sides of life. Her describing how poor white people are treated in school was extremely therapeutic and makes me happy to know there are people out there who understand. This lady needs to be elevated.

Dallas Taylor I think alot of Americans knows that, they just choose not to address it. The division that exist amongst individual groups sweeps away the issues under the carpet unfortunately

Drew Lovelyhell As a Florids native. Yeah. Out schools look like prisons. Communities have been pushing to change that though by allowing certain artists to paint on the walls of our school. Carol City Middle School has a wonderful mural.

Looks like students might be less likely to get shot in prison. Prisons are quite a bit more expensive to run, though. And I don't think it does your mental health any good to be locked up and guarded constantly. What can you expect with 10 million AR15s?

We also have to focus on THINKING instead of rote memory. Some very bright kids can't seem to keep the times tables straight, and fail out.... but can outsmart every attempt to stop them getting weed into the bathroom, and do fractions in their heads while figuring how much to sell it for.

In my case, I hacked the teacher's computer to change my Grade to a passing one. ... I still wonder what I could have done with my life if my family wasn't on foodstamps then and could have afforded our own computer at home, or to send me to college for comp-Sci

I always told my teachers I'd pay attention if they were teaching how to do taxes, find a job, etc. Flunked out of high school (Still passed the exit exam, but didn't do all the tedious work), now I have a legit diploma saying I graduated from a private school $50 and some filled out work sheet packets later (Isn't capitalism great??). Education doesn't mean shit if you can buy the piece of paper that denotes how great of a little factory worker you are. Imagine what I could've been doing with all those years wasted in school. Sharpening the skills that afford my rent/food/clothing/tools in my licensed occupation today, I bet.
"Work smarter, not harder" was always my mantra.
EDIT: Currently I really wish they'd taught us how to read "legal-ese". Medical documents, business documents, government documents, etc. all use legal-ese that can be incredibly confusing and frustrating to debunk. That's a skill I'd be USING later in life, every year beyond 18.

My highschool was one of those that looked like a prison (during the early 90s). Razor wire, not barbed wire, but _razor wire_ along the top of the fencing. I looked like a highschool out of "Escape from New York". I moved away, then went back about a year later to visit some old friends and I was practically arrested just for walking on to campus. A couple of decades later I drove through my old home town. The area looks gentrified now and the razor wire is gone from the school.

Looking like a college isn't enough, Bill. College offers topical classes that students need in order to succeed in their chosen fields. As such, colleges periodically update their curriculum, so not only is the curriculum inherently interesting as it pertains to your future directly, but also has much more reliable information, worth paying attention to. You also get to pick what times of day you go, so night owls don't have to wake up when early birds do. Even sleep deprivation alone has a big impact on ability to focus. Kids also mostly know what what they're learning isn't worth much, if anything, in the long run. There's no point in devoting years of your life to understanding something that holds no bearing over your future. We need a curriculum overhaul.

I highly recommend Jim Jefferies stand-up comedy bit about the irrationality of the second amendment.
"That the real reason it was written was so that you could form a militia to fight against a tyrannical government. In case the government became a bunch of cunts, you could all get your guns and fight back, and that’s why it was written. - Yeah! And that made a hell of a lot of sense when it was just muskets. But you do know the government has drones, right? You get that? You’re bringing guns to a drone fight!"

Bill seems to forget his entire show is run by nerds who likely went to college/university FOR arts programs (film/television production, sound production, writing, stage management, etc.)
Arts funding goes to more than stoned hippies doing finger paints or douchebags playing simole acoustic songs. To see a COMEDIAN who uses his own art as a platform for breaking down liberal politics is kind of a slap in the face to the crews and aspirants that make shows like this possible.

I'm conservative to a point but I disagree Bill the Arts need to start in Elementary school and go all the way to college, however the large collages that have the money can take care of there own but the smaller college's that aren't financialy well off should get help from the State and the Federal level, this will allow people to flourish in smaller community's so they can have the same advantages to be the best that can be.

Anna Deavere Smith is very talented actress, playwright, and professor yet she needs to get a grip on her food addiction or she won't be living too long. She's way over weight and very unhealthy. She needs to start eating healthy so she can lose weight and keep her heart healthy too. She is very much admired and respected and this generation of kids needs her continue to as a professor and a voice for women. I hope she makes a diet change soon before it is too late. Maybe some exercise would also help her get healthy too. Brilliant woman and I hope to see here living at least another 20 years. Anna Deavere Smith will be 68 in September (18) and her weight should be a major concern.

The process of incarceration does not start with expulsions. It starts with poor parenting. These absent mentors leave it to the school to raise these little monsters from step one, which was supposed to be taught at home. No, you can't have a crazy, violent moron messing up the rest of the class. The kid goes home for a week causing havoc there, and the bad parents blame the teachers for that too.

It's interesting, how BM agreed with her "emotional pain" comment. And yet he seems to have this insatiable compulsion to continue to mock the #metoo movement. It's like he can't help but show his (subconscious?) hatred of women. That conditioning most men seem to have. We've been ruled, and close to being destroyed, by all this masculine energy sans our feminine energy. It's reflected in the way we treat women, and women represent the feminine energy within us all. But this hatred/fear we have for it (emotion, women, the ignorant belief that "intuition" isn't a thing, certainly not to be taken seriously) is also symbolized by how we discount, dishonor, disrespect...anything that represents feminine energy. Emotion (so points for BM that he agrees that's a major issue), "spirituality" (something he doesn't believe we have/are, but he's right in that it sure as hell isn't religion, which is actually masculine energy...rules/control)... But the fact that he discounts the value of art, that's back to the wrong side, the ignorant side. ART is paramount to our healing ourselves, this world. ART is fueled by EMOTION, and we are so very much needing to grasp just how powerful it is. And express it in this and other healing waya, rather than, I dunno, shoot ppl? Yes, mofo, ART is verrrrry important. Wise up, and realize that the more we begin to respect all these things "feminine" (which includes any and all that are vulnerable, the sick, the poor...women in general), the more likely we'll stop this hell train we're on, this imbalanced nut fest of a reality. Btw, FREEDOM, um, that's a feminine energy. Do we have it? Oh hell no. Ask ppl living on the streets, working in sh*t jobs they hate ... Another? Nature. Look how much we respect her ("Mother Earth"). Again, ask ppl who have been healed (both mentally and physically) after being introduced to some form of ART...and spending time in nature (where it isn't polluted, if you can find such a place)... You're wrong, we need to put a strong emphasis on ART (feminine energy), and all things feminine. It's your fearful/controlling overlord masculine brain that thinks ART is some fluffy bunch of BS. Open your mind (feminine energy)...and LISTEN (feminine energy).

Maybe that harsh punishing that you're talking about poor kids get isn't a good thing. I know at my daughter's school it's a fluid area but there's a couple of foster kids and poor kids here and there and some of them are the most potty mouth aggressive threatening kids I have ever heard of in my life my kids learned words in the fourth grade that 4th grade little girls shouldn't be hearing and it all came from these supposedly better disciplined poor kids. And they're the ones that ruined the day at school they threaten my daughter because they're sitting at home watching their dad or foster dad threatened his wife. And then they come to school and they do the same thing. My daughter's been called the c word the b word all that stuff and it's not coming from the middle-class or upper-class kids it's coming from these poor and foster kids that have to go to her school.

Um... what happened to kids behaving themselves in schools? Kids get suspended/expelled for disruptive/destructive behavior. Point blank.

Kelli Barnhouse: I agree. But I'd like to add that sometimes the schools are at a disadvantage, because when parents are informed of their child's behavior, the first thing that often happens is that child's parents rush to his/her defense. As a kid, that upset me. As a responsible adult, it absolutely sickens me. My mother or father would never try to defend me or my brother being screw ups in class. They had their own rules for going to school. If we broke those rules, we did so at our own peril.

Y W: Well... let's get the village back together. Any adult in the housing project that I grew up in had permission to correct me if I was caught doing something wrong. Then they would take me to my mother, tell her what happened, and then I caught hell from her.

Very good points. Might I add that China has basically already taken over. We are in a downward spiral and Trump solidified it so there is no escape. We are fucked.

John Lewis? I have no respect for this person after how he, during the 2016 election, publicly questioned -- in his support of Hillary Clinton -- Bernie Sander's work and effort during the years of Civil Rights Movement.

Could not disagree with this woman more. You want to know what cops are thinking or what they are protecting, come put a uniform on or do a few ride alongs. See what happens. See the lack of media coverage they get when they save a life or the thanks they never receive after a shift of being threatened, shot at and seeing dead bodies. I assure you lady, you wouldn't be able to handle it. Not saying that there arent some bad cops out there or dorty ones, which i have zero tolerancd for, but you dont want people to nonmajority communities with one broad stroke then dont do it to the hard working police out there. Love ya Bill, but I do not agree with this woman at all.

"cops are all about protecting property". No, cops are all about enforcing the law, be it good or bad, your property and rights means nothing if they don't explicitly have a rule that says you have them.

policeman or soldier? These two words aren't synonyms & the jobs' descriptions aren't the same. The societal roles aren't the same either. Your mention of USAF is strange. They weren't talking about military personnel.

America has PLENTY of resources in education. At some point you have to blame the kids. Kids in America just don’t value their education. Thug culture has eroded their minds. Too many kids grow up memorizing the lyrics to rap songs and not enough memorize their school material. You can’t teach a kid if he doesn’t want to learn.

I know plenty of kids who enjoyed rap music and are doing damn well for themselves after graduation. Rap lyrics tend to be more prolific than the shit you heard from the beatles.
