What I always remember from the book is after this famous quote, Nick comments that when her voice stopped, he felt "the basic insincerity of what she said". And that foreshadowed her behaviour in the rest of the book. I hope that we are not too captivated by Eva's beautiful singing to miss Daisy's deceptions later in the musical either
Oh I absolutely agree. Daisy really has absolutely no self awareness. I think she lacks the insight to sing anything sincere. I hope they don't change that. At the end of the book, Gatsby is dead and Daisy GOES ON VACATION and giddily pretends none of it happened. Also watched the opening number, and I really hope they're not trying to make Gatsby suave. He's a trembling wet rat. Daisy is a girlfailure. This is not a love story.
@@Sarah-ho1oi I've found these reasons are exactly why this book is impossible to adapt and why it works only on the page. You're not supposed to like these characters. But on screen or stage, you HAVE to be able root for someone trying to achieve something. You have no reason to root for any of these characters because they're all awful some way, and that is the point Fitzgerald is making. This song is supposed be be Daisys' life philosophy, or at the very least, Daisy convincing herself that's it's her philosophy. Either way, it's her justification for her choices we see her make, and NONE of that is showing in what is just your average bombastic ballad trying to be 'sincere'.
@@jenniferhiemstra5228 I don't agree. Just because characters have flawed personalities (as we all do) doesn't mean we can't "root" for them. Adaptations can fail for myriad other reasons, but not because of that. I thought the Baz Luhrmann adaptation was amazing and Daisy was particularly good, although she was portrayed as being a bit more sympathetic.
@@DagOnFire07 With respect, you’re wrong. Fitzgerald literally created characters you shouldn’t root for. That was his entire point in writing this as I mentioned above, by consciously making them unlikable. This is beyond being simply flawed, he wrote them to be awful, and use that and their equally awful choices as cautionary tales. As Sarah above me said, this isn’t a love story. Like, at all. And a cardinal rule in live storytelling that actors study is you have be able to root for the characters you see, none of what Fitzgerald intended by writing this book. The 2013 film is decent, but merely was a vehicle for Luhrmanns heightened stylization.
I saw this on broadway a few weeks ago mostly so I could meet Jeremy Jordan because im a huge newsies fan but Eva's voice gave me such huge goosebumps through this entire show her voice just takes my breath away and I'm so happy I got to meet her as well

So, this is probably ot for this, but I keep hearing her voice being the voice of Lilith in Hazbin because it would be an amazing singer and then she can pull off probably a bit of the Mean Girl voice in her speaking voice which is what I am imagining the show would interpret as the female version of Adam.
@@sydneyjade1730 i don't know that the age factors too much in because Erica's voice is so Disney princess that its just important to sound like more life experience is there. I am a little unclear if Lilith died when she was cast down or died at some point later or before or after she had Charlie. I suspect she was alive then just because that factors into the type of mythology being told, because otherwise I would think Heaven would be considering Charlie the Antichrist.

It sounds great and the performance is great, but I don't think Daisy would ever sing this to someone. She keeps her feelings to herself and hides her depths with shallowness.
Look into the hungarian version. Sadly there is not too much footage outside the trailer. But the thing I really liked about it is how even though sometimes you can see how daisy is not happy, she always tries to cover it up. Even the songs back it up so well. For example i love how in that version she and Gatsby don't get a real love song together, because only Gatsby is the one who believes full heartedly that they can still be together, Daisy knows deep down that those times are gone. In Hungarian it's 'A nagy Gatsby - Vígszínház' or the song which is kinda equal to this is 'Gyönyörű és Bolond - Nagy Gatsby' I would recommend you to take a look at them :D
The fact that this is lifted almost word-for-word from the novel tells you how much the show creators want to stay true to the source material
...
Her voice is much vulnerable in this role she’s playing.
I need this song to be recorded and streaming so I can listen to it non stop.
its out now!! 🙏

Idk, I’m really okay with characters having more complexity offered to them, especially women written by men in the 1920s.
She's just incredible.
Yes, incredibly bad in this role
