Would a couple wearing cloaks daily delve into creepy valley?
Excuse me miss, but how do I know how wide to make this? I’m chubby and not sure if this will effect how it will look.
As a non-native english speaker that’s used to the metric system, the whole measuring sections of this were... an experience.

Yeah, we were supposed to switch over to the metric system in the 90’s so I remember them drilling it into our heads as a kid. But they never changed over so it must have been too costly to change everything I guess.
It's frustrating, most tutorials are like that.
I hate wearing coats and jackets, but I'm totally down to confuse my coworkers and the employees at the local Walmart by rolling in in a hand embroidered cloak.

As someone who is currently hand embroidering a baby blanket for a friend, let me suggest that you make sure you have enough time on your hands before you start the embroidery process.

I've made quite a few capes/cloaks over the years, most of them lined.. I woudn't suggest sewing the lining to the outer fabric on the hem, yes it's faster, but different fabrics stretch at different rates and it's very likely you'll have problems with it after a short bit of use, or especially if you ever need to wash it. Better practice is to sew the front sides together, hem the lining and outer fabric separately, and make the lining a bit shorter so if it stretches it doesn't show. You can tack the two pieces together in a few places around the hem so it doesn't get all turned inside out, but don't do it tightly, use a little piece of woven tape or a thread chain that's 1-2 inches long so there's wiggle room for the stretch. The way described here is fine for a costume, but for every day use or hard repeated reenactment use do it the right way first to save yourself having the rip out that bottom seam later.

Hello Emily I know it has been 2 years since you posted this so the chance of a response is slim, but I am a beginner at sewing, and I cant quite understand what you are saying on how to fix the problem. I understand the issue of them being sewn at the hem. I just cant seem to get what you are saying on how to fix it.
I've never tailored anything before but I wanted to make my husband a cloak for his birthday. I followed your instructions but used only one layer of heather grey fleece and I'm so excited to give it to him! Thank you so much! What would have cost over $120 retail for the finished product only cost me $35 in fabric because I caught a 50% off sale! He's wanted one for years and is going to be thrilled.

I tried doing this with heavy duty trash bags at work, it was raining heavily that day and I had forgotten to bring my jacket. I only needed to walk about 3 blocks, so without basic knowledge and shapes that I needed, it didn't come out as cool as I had hoped but it worked pretty well lol. I may or may not be using this video as a reference on how to make a new one lol

Thank you very much for this great tutorial! A black cloak can be used for so many things that I'm going to give it a try myself. I'm thinking about using wool, hair canvas or fusible interfacing, and black chintz for the lining. Wish me luck finding all the materials!

Thanks so much for this thorough video! I just finished my cloak for a renaissance festival and it came out great and I learned a ton! I wish there was an easy way to post a picture. My hood ended up being absolutely massive, I think because I cut a larger neck hole and that made the whole hood bigger (6" instead of 5 like in the video - I'm a 6' tall guy so I thought I'd need bigger) - but it's still cool. Mine took all weekend because I'm new to sewing and I also made it more complicated than it had to be by making the hood liner out of faux fur that wraps over the edge a couple inches to make a furry hood rim, and I added a strip of fur down each of the front edges, but I'm thrilled with it.

I Know that this is an old video...but I just used it this weekend to sew a warm cloak for the Renaissance Festival. And it was very helpful. I had bought a pattern a couple of years ago, but this is way easier.

Just a heads up for beginners: if you are making a short length cloak, i.e. if the width of your fabric is not near equal to the length you desire, do not use this method. You will end up with an oblong rectangle and not a square which geometrically cannot be folded to the appropriate size triangle for cutting. You can follow along up until she folds it width-wise. It is very similar to making a circle skirt for your neck, but you only want half a circle skirt for the half circle. Found out the hard way and nearly thought I'd wasted my only fabric I had before the Renaissance festival. Amazing tutorial otherwise!

Get a king size flat sheet from Goodwill or any thrift shop. Dye any color you want. Great practice project that doesn’t cost much. Use an iron transfer pencil to trace an image to iron on the back. Embroider or trace image with permanent markers. My grandkids loved this project.

update: i'm currently making a small cloak for my cat (don't ask) so i can try this out without using up much fabric and when i'm finished i'll make one for my self. I'll let you know how it went

I find it easy to use an actual pattern, there are so many. I usually have 4 panels for the outside and 4 panels for the lining. I've also made my fair share of cloaks.

I want my own one so badly! Omgg and I broke my sawing machine yesterday😂 idk how ppl in my town would react if they have seen me in one, but I wouldn’t care i guess. Look on craigslist or ask around. I've sold sewing machines for $10-$20. Some ppl might also just let you borrow or have 1. Otherwise, sewing by hand takes a lot longer, but it should turn out the same. Best of luck
You can do it! Even without a sewing machine, you can sew it by hand. I did it by hand, it took a while, but it worked.

Wait, I'm so confused about sewing the outer fabric of the hood to the cape part. How do you sew the very beginning and end part with out sewing over the lining bit?
Hi Julia, I don’t remember this being an issue at all. You can pull both the hood and main body linings away from the outer fabric so the linings have right sides facing too and start to sew at the seam between the lining and outer fabric. Since the linings aren’t sewn together yet, it’s easy to do the same thing at the end. It’s hard to explain but I think it will make sense once you’re doing it!
Is their a way to add holes for sleeves in this cloak? This is exactly what I want mine to look like but I mine needs sleeves.
You could cut slits in the seams at the shoulders and add sleeves there. We don't have specifics since we haven't tried this, but that should work. Add the sleeves to the outer fabric and lining before sewing them together. Leave extra length in the sleeves to hem. Good luck!
this halloween I’m gonna be using a black cloak and a scary mask. And yes I’m still in school but it’s actually fun being around people. So that’s going to be my costume. Also my class is doing a haunted house in our classroom for the other grades to experience, we’re gonna be scaring them. I can’t wait. Lol

I saw some instructions where the hood had a round neckline instead of straight. If I would make a cloak with the same hood but with the round neckline, would that chance the falling of the hood?
A hood with a round neckline should work well as long as the length of the neckline of the hood and cloak are the same. But if they're not, you can always put a couple pleats in the one that is longer so they match up.
how would i measure if i wanted to add sleeves to the cloak?
Do you have any tips on how to make it with a 4 foot train and a standing collar? Like a tall Mandarin collar?
You tell us to measure “twice the total length and cut” but I still have no idea how long the side that gets cut should be. Is it a square? It’s hard to know because of the perspective, but are both sides equal in length?
So I was stuck on this same part for like..... 2 hours trying to figure out how to fold it right. after watching the video carefully 3 dozen times I finally saw that the fabric was not a perfect square. When she finishes her cut 2:54 you can see the fabric is not all the way to the bottom. So pretty much you pick the side you want , and fold the side right too it with the neck side at a point. One end of the fabric had an overhang of about 5 inches for me. As long as you can make the semi circle to the length you need , you will be fine.

Yes, this cloak was fairly heavy with the twill and satin fabric. Peachskin and bengaline are lighter weight than the twill and have a sheen without being super shiny. Habutae is a popular lightweight lining fabric.

May I ask, can one make a full circle cloak..?
Sure, you could cut out 2 half circles. You may have to pleat the fabric somewhat when you sew the hood to the cloak.

Hi Julie, This cloak would be easy to make more full! The cloak in the video is 3/4 of a circle but you could do a full circle instead by cutting out 2 half circles. Or if you use the method for longer cloaks, just keep cutting out additional pieces until you have enough for a full circle. For the fabric amount you will need 4x the length of the cloak plus an extra yard for the hood. For the longer cloak method, you may need another extra yard. The hood would be made in the same way as in the video. Good luck!
What are your strategies for keeping the hood on? I have a satin lined cloak that I'm wearing that slides off my head. I have thought about double sided tape and combs but I don't want them to ruin my hair. Any ideas?
Good question! The satin is very slippery. Unfortunately we couldn't think of a good solution for this either. If you do find something that works, we'd love to hear!
Haven't tried it myself, but I've heard from others that you can stick a piece of Velcro to the bottom of the hood then stick that to your hair and it'll stay in place without ruining much of anything
Some people attach a comb hairslide to the hood so it fixes to your hair very securely. Or you could curl back the hood like when you roll your sleeves up.
Alternative ideas, saw some loops of cord to the top inner edge and use a couple of hairclips.
I am considering a couple of magnets instead of a hook-and-eye to close the cloak at the neck... what's your opinion on this?

Note it's 2 yards plus 1 for a hood total 3 yards for outer fabric and another 3 for inner fabric you may want 3 1/2 yards if you want hand holes with trim or pockets or other decorative but matching fabric bits
For winter ones use a woolen felt with a plush furr inner and it's toasty warm and lovely and normal use ones should come to mid calf not lower so to keep it clean longer ones are for weddings or photos only, not practical use.

So I’m about to finish making this cloak... not sure what I did wrong but the lining is longer then the outer fabric and the ends of the bottoms don’t match up.I would recommend that peeps rather cut the fabric from either the inner or outer and then trance that on to the other fabric. ESP to get the edges at the bottom too meet or maybe I just messed it up... but hey gave it a shot. Not too bad.
Greetings all. OFS, what material would you recommend for Luke Skywalker the force awakens cloak. I've made 3 so far from this video, I can't seem to find any material I like and can only get it 40/42" wide so I end up with lots and lots of sections as I am about 5'10" tall. Question, for a larger person is the measuring the same for the yardage? Total length×3÷12÷3?
Generally yes, plus an extra yard for wiggle room when cutting pieces out and have enough for the hood. Keep in mind, the larger the length measurement, the narrower the pieces will be, so it's possible you may want 2 extra pieces to make it more full. If this is the case, multiply by 4 instead of 3. Also if your fabric is less than 60" wide, then pieces will come out smaller and you may need more pieces to get it full enough. my girlfriend is making a cape and she is wondering if to add extra buttons down the front to stop the wind from getting under it. Do you think that would work? she has added armholes but still, pron for the wind to get under it.
