The old school art on the covers had me from the word go.
I'm going to be running a campaign for my group with Shadowdark. Because it takes place on a mysterious hidden island, I'll be using Kelsey's rules for Hunter Mode, which does reward XP for monster kills (I believe the rate is 0.5 XP per Monster Level). I'm starting my group with just the base rules, but there are a couple NPCs around who will be using Cursed Scrolls materials. I also have a big burly badass fighter NPC to help them learn the fundamentals in our sorta Session 0.5. But he's going to die unceremoniously once it's time for them to venture into the deep and foreboding jungle alone. Ought to set the mood nicely. 😂
I'm glad to see more published material (and your coverage) of this OSR system. Is there a Shadowdark gameworld map (like Greyhawk's Oerik) out there yet? 🤔
Not yet. The three 'zines each contain a sort of hexcrawl mini-campaign, but no singular campaign setting to date. Most SD GMs are either making homebrew worlds or converting existing settings.

Since I live in China, it's a crap shoot. I may be the first to get it, I may be the last to get it, and unfortunately, it might not show up for me at all. I sure hope it makes it intact and soon. I love this thing in spite of my hatred for reading PDFs. It's a very cool system.

Dragon was original more games than just DND, what is the point of a magazine for a single game? Doesnt that just make material that is limited edition so becomes hard to sustain if the system survives any length of time? 🤔
Are these more like the 5e playtests that will later be edited into book form? 🤔

Zines are pretty popular format, especially within the OSR. I’m surprised you’re not aware of this.
@@DM_BluddworthI dont do OSR, we played Basic. Havent played since late 90s with death of the GM. Why would I know everything went to magazine subscriptions? Dragon ended before I cane back to TRPG internet. 😶
I would suggest you look to get back to playing TTRPGs instead of just playing the internet game. I think you’ll learn a lot about gaming by actually playing or even running games again. Yes, things have changed but you can still capture that old school feel even with modern games (other than 5E or PF2E).
@@DM_Bluddworth I wontbe doing that. My gaming days are far behind and not interested in playing with other gamers. Our group worked for us, but no other layers did. We were what made the game enjoyable, not the game so much.
I am fine discussing gaming, and learning bits and pieces from various places, and what things have gone wrong in gaming.

My man...why don't you try solo TTRPG gaming instead of asking snarky questions from the cheap seats? Just reading a gameset like Shadowdark or Castles & Crusades will show you what the OSR is all about. 👍🏼
