  • I review, breakdown and explain Black Mirror Season 6 Episode 3 Beyond The Sea Netflix. I discuss the story about Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett in space as Cliff and David and all of the hidden easter eggs. I react to the technology which is called ‘The Link’ which has replicas on earth, the morality behind if they’re human and the ending which was so powerful. I also give my theories and predictions on how it connects to the other episodes in the show.

I loved this episode! It did not end how I thought it would ... I totally thought up until the end, David would kill Cliff in space and go back down and pretend to be him and live a life with Lana. Wow I never knew I could hate Josh Hartnett’s character so much. He was the good husband with a happy family, so it was so devastating to watch him act so selfish. I couldn’t believe David would do such a thing when Cliff went out of his way to do him a huge favor. I think we all thought David was going to kill Cliff to hijack his life on earth, but I remembered they need each other alive for the mission. David knew Cliff couldn’t do anything. David kicking out that chair was so powerful like it meant: “now we’re on the same boat.” It just hurts a lot more since Cliff had nothing to do with the death of David’s family.

    • @0eloquency0
      @0eloquency0 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The killing of Cliff's family at the hands of David was the most logical conclusion to the plot giving all the events that led up to it.
David is not a villain in this story. Both David and Cliff are victims of their own ego and circumstances.
      It's a tragic story but it's a logical tragedy.
It's also poetic because Cliff will now feel the pain that David feels.
The point is not to hate either of the characters but for the audience to empathize with both of them.

@@0eloquency0yeah I agree . I know cliff was mad but he messed up by sayin his wife said he hated him etc etc. David said to him you don’t know what you have and you don’t understand what I’ve lost. If cliff did understand , he would know not to say all that to him but his ego and lack of empathy came into play. It was very apparent that cliff kinda felt bad for David but didn’t care enough to truly come up with a plan. 1 hour each week is terrible. If cliff truly cared he’d understand that circumstances have changed and maybe he should use his body more often. They could’ve discussed him going out and talking to a different woman and establishing two lives through one person but Cliff didn’t want to give up his privilege .When he lied about what his wife said It proved cliff didn’t understand and the only way for him too understand is for him to suffer the same fate

Here we go! My episode of the season, which is rare for me because the longer ones per season don't usually end up that way for me. Aaron Paul was undoubtedly sensational with this role. The shock of Ross' family being killed in front of him set a tone, from there it felt as though we were going to get a story where Ross tries and successfully steals the identity and lives his life in his friends shoes. Instead what we got was something darker I genuinely did not expect, they created such a strong narrative of desiring the life I had not anticipated the result. Moment the airlock opened you had a sense of dread as to what Ross had done. Really happy Brooker hit his mark this season

    • @BrainPilot

Well put! Totally agree on every point. As a viewer, you really did feel like David was going to try and pass himself off as Cliff, but it was far worse. This episode kept me on my feet, the suspenseful build-up, making me guess what David was going to do the whole time. I like this because even after the episode was over, it kept me using my imagination and thinking about the other choices he could have done instead but then coming to realize what he did was the only option to ensure both of them are alive to continue their mission in space. They could have easily did an alternate ending where David just destroys the link so he could never go back to his family too. But went with the more terrifying ending which I'm glad they did.

Nah it was a pretty lazy result for a shock ending nobody would expect because it was so out of character and just wrong. David would have all the power here because he was already suicidal and had nothing to lose and so he would force Cliff to share his life on earth, or the replica at least. Otherwise he would kill them both on the Space Station. He'd probably go and do hedonistic things on earth like a Jekyl and Hyde situation and Cliff would have to live with it. That would be the smartest outcome. Otherwise David would probably just give up and kill himself not care about anyone anymore. Like i said though, Cliff would have to do whatever to keep David sane and living. Also in simulation they should have had a solution for this type of scenario already planned out.

@@Wolfsheim23 YES, THANK YOU! That's exactly what I've just commented on another thread. No build up at all to suggest that David would be able to kill a freaking kid in cold blood just to prove a point. Why do that? To be even more miserable than he already was? To lose a chance of having anything? It would've made a lot more sense for him to use the situation to scare Cliff and to force a negotiation where he'd be able to use Cliff 's replica way more than 1h/week, otherwise he'd kill them both. What we got was just for shock value and made no sense for the characters at all. If they wanted to go for that they could've used some of the long 1 and a half hour to show us that David was losing it. No, they showed us him shaving and this behavior is enough to justify the killing spree. Sorry, didn't work for me.

I thought David was going to destroy the link so when Cliff put his card in, it would turn up as red and prevent him from going back. I was a bit surprised when he was able to get it to work in the final scene where it was revealed that David wasn’t really going to go back to apologize to Cliff’s wife, but instead he wanted revenge at Cliff for destroying his painting in the garage that he spent so much time on. So I liked the twist that he didn’t really apologize to his wife, but desecrated his house with paint.

@@JoeMama-sd2klMy writing edit: I would've written david's family dying via car crash. The random nature of car crashes could be a reflection of the random times the spaceship gets damaged, knowing how David lost his family, we could still witness his dissent into depression but David instead could retract into a more desperate character, wanting to return home and putting his own sanity over the mission. Cliff, being very rigid in his process would object and boom, conflict.
But above all this, DAVID NEEDED TO GO THROUGH GRIEF COUNSELING. Even if it meant doing so in Cliff's replica, that would've been a great opportunity to see Aaron Paul truly show range as Cliff and David in an intimate setting. Especially if the counselor is like Ground Control sanctioned and they constantly try to reassure him that he needs to finish the mission. His breaking point will be when he's in a session and he kills his counselor and he goes to Ground Control to try and force them to abort the mission and return home by any means necessary. Meanwhile the unknowing Cliff is just sitting in the spaceship unaware of what's happening back on Earth and all of a sudden he sees messages from Ground Control saying take David out of the pod or something and he's just genuinely terrified because now he's not only lost control of his replica but now he's trapped up there with David going postal.

So instead of being enthralled with the storytelling from then on, I was just watching and waiting for it to happen as predicted. BUT where I was wrong is that I thought the person that David would life-end would be Cliff. I enjoyed the episode until the end. I wish they'd maybe explained how important this 2 man, 4-year space mission was or its purpose because, in the heat of the moment, I can't understand why Cliff wouldn't try to kill David and instead just sit w/ him at the table and try to go on. If I were in that position, I think I'd rather die alone in space than live w/ the person that killed my family using my face.
If David, or anyone probably, was able to confront the cult leader responsible for his loved one's death, most would go ballistic. Why is this space mission so important that Cliff is willing to continue to work alone w/ David for the next couple of years?
David's family dying was a senseless tragedy, executed by ignorant morons who thought they were doing 'the right thing', but the reason is clear. Cliff's family died for absolutely no reason; David knew the Replica program, he knows how it feels to lose your family, so why did he do it? Because his feelings got hurt when Cliff's wife didn't feel the same way towards him? Because he was jealous that Cliff still had a family? No matter what the reason, Cliff had every right to get his vengeance.
Even if David wanted Cliff to feel his pain, David's family wasn't murdered by someone they knew and had trusted, more or less. David doesn't have to interact with the person/ppl that killed his family every day.
To me, the only acceptable reason for not killing David would be if the fate of the world rested on this space mission. Personally, I like to think that Cliff is playing the long game and will avenge his family or get justice somehow, someday.

Valley of the Dolls - can't reveal the reference without spoiling a major plot point in the episode. Then Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man - most specifically the short story Marionettes Inc (similar events in this plot), then the outlier - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - not tied to this plot, but it's foreshadowing the next episode, Mazey Day.

They would obviously put in a safeguard not allowing anyone to use someone else's replica or else you could easily frame them for something.
Black Mirror is always an issue about common sense safeguards not being placed on some kind of futuristic technology.

06:48 The avatar technology didn't make any sense. They were linked with the replicas and interacting in real time. When astronauts went to the moon, there was a 1 - 2.5 second time delay in communication. Cliff and David are presumably at least as far away as Mars or Venus, given the 4+ year journey. It's actually more likely that they would be going to Jupiter, which is about 4 AUs away when it is closest to Earth. But let's assume they're near Venus or Mars. When Venus is closest to the Earth, the distance is about 0.25 AUs, which is about 125 light seconds. Mars at its closest approach to Earth is about 0.4 AUs, or 200 light seconds. Have you ever played a first person shooter computer game on a server with 200 ping, and you're constantly getting shot and can't hit anything? That's called lag. 200 ping is 0.2 seconds. If they're going to Venus and they're 120 light seconds from Earth, they would have 240,000 ping. Their interaction with the world would be 4 minutes behind. The replica link technology is dumb.

I’m just wondering if cliffs character had anything at all to do with the USS episode? Is there a connection since he’s still in space ?

I dont think David killed Cliffs family. David considered himself an artist, so I think he went overboard on the red paint, and created a scene for David to make him consider morality. Why else would David push the chair out instead of preparing for battle upon Cliffs return to the station?

Just watched it. It's alot of things to to wrap your head around, but when you pointed out Cooper's book store it kinda makes sense what the theme of this show in general is. Which is mind travel. You saw it in Cooper's story, Striking Vipers, Black Museum, San Junipero, the Miley Cyrus one and more.
This one though doesn't give you much to work with in terms of metaphors. David was a snake, Cliff told him and he went nuts because he had nothing to loose? Or was it that he found motivation to stay on course for the next 4 years to live on his life on earth and needed Cliff's help by getting his full attention on the ship by killing his family?
If we think straight forward what happened in the ending, it's too simple.
My theory. The key was when the wife told Cliff she was lonely and not happy after he left. After that conversation his wife and kid was killed. Before that David's family was killed. Maybe the message with this episode was that you loose your family when you are stuck with work and don't give your family time. Black Mirror as a whole mostly has metaphors related to our real life struggles and happiness so i choose to believe that.

One thing that rly confused me is if they can make a exact replica with the same consciousness and intelligence as their human counterparts then why don’t they just send the replica to space and keep the humans down to earth.

The ending seemed extremely superfluous and forced in my opinion. Seemed like Brooker needed a classic black mirror-esque conclusion and just threw it in there for shock value

    Hear me out ,
I am a bit optimistic and have an alternative ending.
David only kills the dog so he can get cliff to talk, thats why he offer him the chair.
Just giving him the feeling of what he is capable of

REAL COMMENTARY ON THE EPISODE…. it’s Back Mirror at its best, but it has its flaws… Lana turns out to be the most pivotal character, who ends up being butchered with no remorse.. the kid dies with her… David’s finger is charismatic, he is a tortured soul turned into lunatic demon himself, Cliff is just an I’ll fated regular boring guy who submits to David in the end…. In any case David’s and Lana’s chemistry didn’t mean much and neither did Cliffs and Lana’s chemistry.. the audience doesn’t gravitate towards either side.. she was just being selflessly good in every situation and putting others above her… However, the guys were on some ego trip.. and we’re fighting over their ego to finally settle for their own survival in the end.. lol… I bet that David and Cliff were better friends in the End.. it’s sad though that Lana had to pay the price..
Flaws: why the fuck this important mission does not have any Ground Staff to take care of the Astronauts…. AND WHAT IS THE SPACE MISSION ABOUT ANYWAYS?????????? Media should stop portraying Artists as Murderers, because there is no reason to it… ❤😂🎉

I think there's a very subtle reference to Yorkie's actress (Mackenzie Davis) from San Junipero. Upon returning to the ship after inspecting the supposedly damaged coolant, Cliff said something about the system sending out false alarms, which they should they report to someone at the controls named Mackenzie.
Mackenzie Davis played a similar role in the movie "The Martian" which also starred Kate Mara, who plays Cliff's wife Lana.

I'd beg to differ a bit. The concept is flawed. You'd think the replicas would be in space, doing the dangerous work and the ending was telegraphed in the first chunk.
