Thanks people for the kind words. I wasn't complaining and I see the customers point. I would have and I did do injectors. The difference is because the outcome was not what he wanted I removed the injectors and only got my original checkout time. Lesson learned. I'm checking running compression on all dusted engines from now on.
I believe you are one of the most knowledgeable resources on the Tube... there are so many contributing factors to a why a engine runs the way it does. I could see why the customer might be chapped. Even aftermarket injectors can easily run $1000. I had some rough running conditions and fixed them permanently with stiction eliminator oil additive ....HOTSHOT stiction eliminator.. $60. but it worked for my issue. Beats the 1550 estimate for new injectors I was quoted. I've put over 3200 miles on it since and it runs awesome.

Very interesting and useful information, thanks for sharing! I've found that people really have no concept of how susceptible diesels are to dusting. It's incredibly important to use a proper filter, and to examine the system often to make sure it is sealing properly.

I understand completely. Doing fleet work you see engines that haven't been maintained worn out under 60k miles. Its tough to believe sometimes that all of that damage is due to basic maintenance. The 5.4 3 valve vct system is also very sensitive to oil change interval. Gotta stay on top of the maintenance....either pay now or pay later.
Let this be a lesson kids... even a workhorse dog of an engine like the 7.3 will go to s**t if you don't do basic maintenance. Three main things to remember with the 7.3: Clean air/fuel filter, pipe sleeves on correctly and boots nice and tight, and for the love if God GET YOUR OIL CHANGED REGULARLY.

Also let me guess, you got paid 1 hour check out to diag and you spent 2 plus hours working on the truck. Sad to say this has become the norm in our profession. The times that burn me most is when the customer insist on waiting in the waiting room for a diagnosis ,because in their minds the little brain box you plug up to the vehicle tells you what's broke. They don't understand that there is more technology in todays vehicle than what took Neil to the moon ! Most highschool dropouts that used to fix their cars are now limited to farmall tractor repair at home.

ron hey yeah how ya doin? during the running test do u still have the valve in place? what adapter are u using to screw into the glow plug hole? i see u are using the snap on gauge. thanx gr8 video
I would think that 500+ lbs of compression should fire. It may not be contributing 100% but that's enough compression to fire the fuel. Did you try to take a running compression test on one of the good cylinders with the injector disabled? It would make sense that a cylinder that is firing would have higher compression pressures due to the expanding gasses after it fires. That would show a marked increase in compression pressure at the guage.
I purchased a 2003 Excursion 7.3 exact same problem previous owner had removed the air filter turbo impeller is obviously damaged and has affected cylinders 1 and 8

I put a reman injector pump and injectors on my 7.3 IDI and it runs TERRIBLE. I don’t know if it’s timing or what but I feel pretty disheartened. Lots of white smoke.
do not let that POS customer, with a broke truck get you down, we all sometimes go the wrong way on a Diag, BTDT sometimes the customer never knows you spent 3 plus hours to diag their complaint because you were chasing your tail
typical customers. Its an honest mistake being cranking compression was at a base 400 even on "known good" cylinders. Its a machine people need to understand that it can be super difficult thing to fix expecially when you can see nothing if the actual inner workings. Great example and video. That turbo does look like shit btw
Hi, I have a ford super duty, with a 7.3 ,240 000 miles on it. it was working very well then it stop. I started it runs good on idle but when I push the accelerator pedal it stop working, I crank it again it works, then I push that pedal and it stop. I change the fuel filter the one that separates the water from the diesel, It keep doing the same. I disconnect the batteries wait a few min, then I reconnected back and the motor ran very well for a week, then it stop and as before keep doing the same. any idea, what can be the problem?
Wow, so sad to see such a great engine destroyed at such an early mileage just because its difficult for the owner to maintain it. The last good diesel Ford had. Well, I don't really know how the new 6.7L is doing...
Customer is an idiot, anybody that can take such a very expensive piece of equipment and ruin it due to laziness and lack of maintenance is shame. We should all be so lucky to own such a marvelous truck. That's what entitlement will give you.
what does the repeair manual say about comppression wear, on my 93 e350 7.3 it states that no lower than 30% of the rest of the cylinder on the same bank/or opposite bank, that is what i remember, don`t know if its the same values with 7.3 powestrokes, but anyway ford should have been more spesific about that part though..

I Found One In The UK, But They Will Not Let Me Buy It. Any Ideas Where I Can Find One? Also Where Can I Buy The Internal O-Rings For These Injectors At? Any Help Would Be Much Appreciated, Thanx In Advance
Hate it when a customer blames you but won't pay you to fix it he wants to fit his own parts and won't let you diagnose it properly. Better off without customers like that as it knocks your confidence for no reason just because he doesn't maintain his vehicle properly.

03 f350 rebuit & shimmed drivers side injectors including interior exterior o-rings. Wont start.ipr,icp cps all new prior to rebuild. Did u fix ur problem? Frustrating
in my eyes buddy should be thankful, usally when a motor is done its from lsevre damage, in his case he can still rebuild it with only a set over oversized pistons and ring's, plus no ones perfect shit happens
Ron, I have a early 1999 with a 7.3 PS, with the same cct flagging 1 & 8, all 8 passed the buzz test. No noticeable difference in crank speed of cylinders when turning over. The turbo wheel had signs of dusting too. Fuel pressure 60psi, good oil, filter, etc. Appears to have a dead miss in 1 & 8, will drive/smooth out decent past 50 mph, but has obvious loss of power with hesitation. I havnt done a crank/running cylinder comp test yet. Does it sound as though this motor has the same exact symtoms your customers did in this video? If so, what are your thoughts of the potential repair to correct the problem? Thanks, Steve
This is rare. can you monitor perdel? it is like a cylinder contribution. 8 is always higher, with the updated cam sensor 8 gets flagged a lot. do you have access to a,cylinder cancelation box? it's where you can cut off each cylinder while it's running.

Is yours a 6.0 or 7.3? Cause my #3 injector is popping a code whenever I run CCT and I would love to not have to take it in for a compression test...

I have a 2001, F250, 7.3....with 425,000 miles. NEVER would I ever let my motor look as bad as that one does.

Special injector is probably more expensive then adding the regulated fuel return that Ford removed from the T444E (7.3 powerstroke.)

for 80k on the clock that engine looks like it was running on the original oil from the factory
in my truck i have buy used. Is have missing the air box hose. That missing hose can make hard start? and make the engine run rough?

@@josevaldez-qq9qu what did you find. Been a while. Same issue with mine. Replace everything oil thru turbo and miss 1 and 8
u could have replaced the HPOP with a high performance one and solved the problem
