Anyone following NBA basketball in the 90's and 00's remembers the infamous Big Shot Bob. If he was on your team, 1 minute left in the 4th Quarter, you always yelled to the TV, "PASS IT TO HORRY!"
It didn't matter if Kobe, Hakeem or Duncan was on the floor. Just pass the damn ball to Horry, for the win!
And if Horry wasn't on your team, you would fear him in the 4th!
He may not have been the main reason for those Finals wins, but without him, none of that would happen. Best role player ever!

Dude has more rings, years in the league and more playoff appearances than MJ but never made an All-Star team but was one of the most clutch shooters ever. His ability to be on the right team at the right time to win championships. Dude was probably average at best but the most clutch shooter ever. He never failed ever.

2003 game 5 Lakers vs Spurs in the semifinals. He missed the game winning 3. In and out. SA stopped the Lakers chance at a 4peat. 4 games to 2. Horry became a Spurs the following year. So he’s not always clutch. 😉

Jordan and Kobe was a clutch player but this is something else. I thought that Horry was a good mediocre player but now I see he had nerves and balls of steel. When the pressure and stakes were the highest he couldn't really miss. This guy was something else. Most people collapse under this kind of this pressure he became better.
I thought he was a lucky player to win 7 rings but now I understand why it was necessary to play him for those teams.

People talk about Robert Horry as a clutch player who hit big shots, but he's much more than that. Horry was a great playoff performer, period.
Remember the way people talk about Jamal Murray turning it on in the playoffs and becoming much greater than his usual self? (well, until 2024 that is) This was Horry, but even better. I don't know how many people here are statheads, but there's this one stat I really like called VORP: Value over Replacement Player, a catch-all stat to measure a player's value. Robert Horry's playoff VORP is fantastic for a complementary player.
Let's say that most games played in a finals run is 20-25. You expect a star player to amass a VORP over 1.0 in that span, where anything above zero is decent value. The really great superstars will get over 2.0 in a 20+ game playoff run (Jordan, Lebron, Hakeem, Kawhi, Jokic, etc, averaging about 0.1 per game). Horry got over 1.0 four times, which is insane for a non-star player, and had several others runs that were solidly above-average.
In his first championship run with the Rockets (the '94 championship team), Horry had the second best VORP behind Hakeem (2.6 to 1.4), where no one else was above 1.0 (Kenny Smith had 0.6). In his second championship run with the Rockets (in '95), his VORP was just a hair behind Hakeem and Drexler (1.4 vs. 1.7 and 1.5, respectively).
In the 2002 Lakers run, Horry's VORP was almost as good as Kobe's (1.2 vs. 1.3; Shaq had 1.9). In the Spurs 2005 run, Horry was 34 and really had no business dominating the NBA playoffs, but he did. His VORP was 1.5 (third best on the team, not far from Ginobili's 2.2 and Duncan's 1.6). Even two years later, in the Spurs' 2007 run, at 36, Horry was the Spurs third best performer by VORP (at 0.7).
This is legendary stuff. You won't find many all-stars who have playoff performances like this and in this quantity. When people say that their team (whether the Rockets, Lakers or Spurs) wouldn't win without Horry, they're not exaggerating. Take out Horry and you lose loads of value. He's not just Big Shot Rob. This guy was the complete package.

I was so happy, thinking LA was about to lose. He looked at me and asked “you think it’s over don’t you?” Next play, ball was kicked out to Horry and he knocked down the game winning 3. I remember reading a Sports Guy article about the 2002 Finals, and Simmons asked who from then could even play in the current Finals of that day - he said only Shaq, Kobe, Kidd, and Horry. That is pretty strong company for a so called role player. I would take Horry on my team seven days a week and twice on Sundays. "You'd better tell him to read a paper or something."
